Abdul Razzaq Shahid1 Muhammad Shafique 2 Zulfiqar Ahmad Tabassam3 Historical Anthropology of Cholistan Through Folk Tradition Abstract Folklore are consist of historical legend which form popular belief, customs, rituals and different types of traditional mega-narratives. Story-telling is an ancient profession and tradition of human civilization; thus folklore is a very common phenomenon to primitive racial societies as well as post modern complex cosmopolitan cultures. The folklore records the memory of how society or certain tribes lead their life through the history. It brings to lights various aspects of society dealing with religion, rituals, customs, beliefs, superstitions etc. It also provides background data to study the politics, economy and state of knowledge amongst given structure of cultures. That is why while writing history, historians have to rely heavily on the tradition of folklore. The same is the case with Cholistan and neighboring Rajhistan. James Tod in his Annals and Anquities of Rajhastan relied heavily on the data provided by Folklorists. Writing this paper oral sources of folklore are relied along with written sources 1. Introduction. Cholistan, once a part of Rajhistan in history, is an area which is called Southern cradle of Indus valley civilization around the river Sarswati which is lost in history.4 Sarswati has been meant as ‘passing Water’5 and also as ‘goddess of knowledge, art and music’6 in ancient mythic tradition of Hindustan. It is supposed to be the region where Rig Ved was composed and orally transmitted to the generations to come.7 A large number of Archeological evidences at Phulra, Fort Marot, Derawar Fort etc., and shrines of Sufis confirm the ancient historical status of the region. -

LENT* Compared to its English annd Chinese language newspapers and periodicals, Nlalaysia's national language press is relatively young. The first recognized newspaper in the Malay (also called Bahasa Malaysia) language appeared in 1876, seven decades after the Go'vern ment Gazette was published in English, and 61 years later than the Chinese J!lonthly 1\1agazine. However, once developed, the Malay press became extremely important in the peninsula, especially in its efforts to unify the Malays in a spirit of national consciousness. Between 1876 and 1941, at least 162 Malay language newspapers, magazines and journals were published, plus eight others in English designed by or for Malays and three in Malay and English.I) At least another 27 were published since 1941, bringing the total to 200. 2) Of the 173 pre-World War II periodicals, 104 were established in the Straits Settlements of Singapore and Penang (68 and 36, respectively): this is understandable in that these cities had large concentrations of Malay population. In fact, during the first four decades of Malay journalism, only four of the 26 newspapers or periodicals were published in the peninsular states, all four in Perak. The most prolific period in the century of Malay press is the 35 years between 1906-1941, when 147 periodicals were issued: however, in this instance, 68, or nearly one half, were published in the peninsular states. Very few of the publications lasted long, to the extent that today, in Malaysia, despite the emphasis on Malay as the national language, there are only three Malay dailies. -

Thalassemia can lead to severe transfusion-dependent anemia, and it is the most common genetic disorder in Malaysia. This paper aims to determine the prevalence of thalassemia in the Kadazandusuns, the largest indigenous group in Sabah, East Malaysia. α- and β-thalassemia were confirmed in 33.6% and 12.8%, of the individuals studied respectively. The high prevalence of α-and β-thalassemia in the Kadazandusuns indicates that thalassemia screening, genetic counseling, and prenatal diagnosis should be included as part of their healthcare system. -

Malaysia’s ruling party came under scrutiny in the 2008 general election for the inability to resolve pressing issues confronted by the minority Malaysian Indian community. Some of the issues include unequal distribution of income, religion, education as well as unequal job opportunity. The ruling party’s affirmation came under critical situation again when the ruling government decided against recognising Tamil language as a subject for the major examination (SPM) in Malaysia. This move drew dissatisfaction among Indians, especially the Tamil community because it is considered as a move to destroy the identity of Tamils. Utilising social theory, this paper looks into the fundamentals of the language and the repercussion of this move by Malaysian government and the effect to the Malaysian Indians identity. Keywords: Identity, Tamil, Education, Marginalisation. 1. Introduction Concepts of identity and community had been long debated in the arena of sociology, anthropology and social philosophy. Every community has distinctive identities that are based upon values, attitudes, beliefs and norms. All identities emerge within a system of social relations and representations (Guibernau, 2007). Identity of a community is largely related to the race it represents. Race matters because it is one of the ways to distinguish and segregate people besides being a heated political matter (Higginbotham, 2006). -

Incorporating a Malaysian Nation Thomas Williamson St. Olaf College What value remains in the concept of economic nationalism? As Michael Heilperin defined it in 1960, economic nationalism referred to "the desire to plan the economic life of the country as independently as possible of the condi- tion of the world economy" (19£0:20). Heilperin's analysis echoes back to old battles between mercantilists and the liberal economists, whose arguments over trade and tariffs Eric Hobsbawm has summarized (1990:24-31). The con- cept of economic nationalism reached a particular florescence after World War I, sufficient to warrant its own volume in publisher H. W. Wilson's 1933 series of "timely topics" called The Reference Shelf (Hodgson 1933). Through the depths of the 1930s depression and the return of substantial tariff barriers, to the import substitution policies followed by many of the postcolonial new na- tions, the considerable literature concerned with "economic nationalism" de- scribes the shifting alignments of economic and political borders (Burnell 1986; Johnson 1967; Simonds and Emeny 1935). Tracing these debates out- lines an international history of the possibilities for social affiliation during the age of nation-states. Economic nationalism takes on a particular importance in a society like Malaysia where it is difficult to locate a more conventional modern national ensemble. Several years ago, Malaysian academic and politician Goh Cheng Teik described his country's population as being one where "deep in our heart of hearts, we are still ethnic. We are Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Mela- naus, Kadazans or Bajaus, not Malaysians" (1994:5). As Goh suggests, a major challenge for articulating Malaysian nationalism is the country's prominent ethnic divisions.
