Cantare Songlist west coast music Cantare Please find attached the Cantare Band song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, F/D Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio of the song(s). In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. Clients are not obligated to submit a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and/or avoided. If you desire the highest degree of control (asking the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we would ask for a minimum 80 requests from the band’s songlist. Please feel free to call us at the office should you have any questions. – West Coast Music JAZZ/STANDARDS At Last- Etta James Paper Moon- Natalie Cole Cheek To Cheek- Louis Armstrong/Ella Perfidia- Linda Ronstadt Fitzgerald Someone Like You- Adele Come Away With Me- Norah Jones Somewhere Over The Rainbow- Various Don’t Know Why- Norah Jones Atists Fly Me To The Moon- Frank Sinatra Stronger Than Me- Amy Winehouse Georgia On My Mind- Ray Charles The Way You Look Tonight- Frank Girl From Ipanema- Various Artists Sinatra In The Mood Unforgettable- Nat King Cole/Natalie LOVE- Nat King Cole/Natalie Cole Cole Moon River- Frank Sinatra What A Wonderful World- Louis Moondance- Frank Sinatra Armstrong Mr. Magic- Amy Winehouse You Are So Beautiful- Joe Crocker My Funny Valentine- Frank Sinatra You Know Im No Good- Amy New York, New York- Frank Sinatra Winehouse Our Love Is Here To Stay- Various Artists SOUL/CLASSIC R&B/DANCE ABC- Jackson 5 Black and White- Michael Jackson Aint Nobody- Chaka Khan Boogie Oogie Oogie- Taste of Honey Aint Too Proud To Beg- The Brick House- The Commodores Temptations Brown Eyed Girl- Van Morrison All Night Long- Lionel Richie Candyman- Mary Jane Girls All Night Long- Mary Jane Girls Celebration- Kool and the Gang Bad Girls- Donna Summer Chain of Fools- Aretha Franklin Beat It- Michael Jackson Cruisin- Smokey Robinson Billie Jean- Michael Jackson Dancing In The Street- Martha and The My Girl- The Temptations Vandellas Natural Woman- Aretha Franklin Dancing Queen- ABBA O! • Aretha Franklin's Gendered Re-Authoring of Otis Redding's
Popular Music (2014) Volume 33/2. © Cambridge University Press 2014, pp. 185–207 doi:10.1017/S0261143014000270 ‘Find out what it means to me’: Aretha Franklin’s gendered re-authoring of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’ VICTORIA MALAWEY Music Department, Macalester College, 1600 Grand Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55105, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In her re-authoring of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’, Aretha Franklin’s seminal 1967 recording features striking changes to melodic content, vocal delivery, lyrics and form. Musical analysis and transcription reveal Franklin’s re-authoring techniques, which relate to rhetorical strategies of motivated rewriting, talking texts and call-and-response introduced by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The extent of her re-authoring grants her status as owner of the song and results in a new sonic experience that can be clearly related to the cultural work the song has performed over the past 45 years. Multiple social movements claimed Franklin’s ‘Respect’ as their anthem, and her version more generally functioned as a song of empower- ment for those who have been marginalised, resulting in the song’s complex relationship with feminism. Franklin’s ‘Respect’ speaks dialogically with Redding’s version as an answer song that gives agency to a female perspective speaking within the language of soul music, which appealed to many audiences. Introduction Although Otis Redding wrote and recorded ‘Respect’ in 1965, Aretha Franklin stakes a claim of ownership by re-authoring the song in her famous 1967 recording. Her version features striking changes to the melodic content, vocal delivery, lyrics and form.

  • Drug Facts Week Message Timely with Death of Amy Winehouse
Drug Facts Week Message Timely with Death of Amy Winehouse Details Created on Friday, 23 December 2011 11:52 Amy Winehouse, the former Grammy award-winning artist who had a very public battle with substance use disorder and her use of several illicit and licit substances, died in July of this year. Last week, however, the long awaited cause of Amy Winehouse's death was disclosed at a coroner's court in London. The findings show that Amy had died from her use of alcohol, not from the illicit substances which were the focus of much media attention. Her tragic and unfortunate loss serves to educate us that there is no "safe drug". Every time someone takes an addictive substance whether it be alcohol or cocaine, tobacco or ecstasy, there are significant risks that need to be understood. Unfortunately, our society has focused its attention in regards to the dangers of addiction according to cultural misperceptions. This non-scientific view has allowed for the de- sensitization of the real dangers of legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco, or prescription drugs which as a result of being improperly used is resulting in an alarming rise in the use of opiates. Seeking to spread the message that all drugs carry risks and are harmful to the body, President Obama's Administration for the second year in a row is holding "Drug Facts Week" from October 31st through November 6th. The weeklong event will seek to connect teens with scientifically proven facts about drugs and substance use disorder. Last year's successful Drug Facts Week saw over 100 community events and discussions between teens and scientists.

  • Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”-- Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine (1987) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Ilan Stavans (Guest Post)*
“Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”-- Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine (1987) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Ilan Stavans (guest post)* “Let It Loose” album cover 45rpm single Enrique Garcia Gloria Estefan’s “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” which represents the apex of Cuban influence on American R&B, also serves as a thermometer for Latino assimilation to the United States, especially in Miami, which was always Estefan’s base. The song came about shortly before her bus accident in 1990, as she was touring, an event that marked her profoundly, physically and creatively. As such, it represents her “early” style and approach, in comparison with a later period in which Estefan would invoke her Cuban roots and upbringing in more concrete fashion. Along with “Conga,” “Bad Boy,” “Get on Your Feet,” “Party Time,” and about half a dozen more, the song made Estefan internationally known. Performed together with Estefan’s group, Miami Sound Machine, founded by her husband Emilio Estefan, it is part of the immensely successful album “Let It Loose” (1987), which went multi-platinum. The song itself was Top 5 on the US Billboard Top 100. It came to define R&B and become a staple of the post-disco disco era because of its eminently danceable qualities. Indeed, most people associate it with an Americanized version of Latin twirl. Estefan is originally from Havana (she was born in 1957). She and her family—her father was a motor escort for dictator Fulgencio Batista’s wife—were part of a massive wave of mostly upper- and middle-class Cubans who moved to the United States in the 1960s, absconding Fidel Castro’s Communist regime.

  • Aint Gonna Study War No More / Down by the Riverside
The Danish Peace Academy 1 Holger Terp: Aint gonna study war no more Ain't gonna study war no more By Holger Terp American gospel, workers- and peace song. Author: Text: Unknown, after 1917. Music: John J. Nolan 1902. Alternative titles: “Ain' go'n' to study war no mo'”, “Ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more”, “Ain't Gwine to Study War No More”, “Down by de Ribberside”, “Down by the River”, “Down by the Riverside”, “Going to Pull My War-Clothes” and “Study war no more” A very old spiritual that was originally known as Study War No More. It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J. Nolan.3 1 http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/grovemusic/spirituals,_hymns,_gospel_songs.htm 2 Thanks to Ulf Sandberg, Sweden, for the Pete Seeger quote.
