(1) Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord January 7, 2018

First Reading: The Pastor’s Keyboard—Msgr. Richard Huneger Isaiah 60:1-6 Responsorial: Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, transferred from January 6 to the Sunday after Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, January 1 in the New Missal. In most countries of the world it is still observed on January 6 itself 12-13 and as both a holyday of obligation, and a holiday off work as well, providing a fitting climax to the Second Reading: preceding 12 Days of Christmas (season) December 25 through January 5. In some countries Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 gifts are given on Epiphany rather than on Christmas (in imitation of the Three Kings, gifts are Gospel: given to others as they were given by the Three Kings to the Christ Child). On the other hand in Matthew 2:2 some places (German-speaking) it is the tradition that Christ himself gives the gifts (and not , who is busy in other countries), but he does so on Christmas: when the family returns home from , the children discover to their delight that the (the Christ “We saw his star at its Child) came while they were at church, to leave the presents under the Christbaum (the Christ Tree). Of course, the parents also help the children to understand that Christ himself is the great- rising and have come to do est gift, and he gave himself to us by his Incarnation, and for us by embracing his Death on the him homage.” Cross, and continues to give himself to us to be with us and within us in Holy Communion. Under the new liturgical calendar, Christmas Season comes ends with the feast of the Bap- tism of the Lord, unless Epiphany, if transferred to the Sunday after January 1, falls on January 7 or 8, in which case the Baptism of the Lord is observed on the Monday afterward. Then begins what is now called Sundays 1-34 of "Ordinary Time" rather than by the traditional term "Time after Epiphany," and the use of green vestments resumes. (Similarly, after Pentecost, the New Missal simply resumes "Ordinary Time" where it left off, instead of having Sundays dubbed as "Time after Pentecost.") The original feast of "Epiphany" in the Eastern Roman Empire in the earliest centu- ries of Christianity, was actually the January 6 feast of the Baptism of the Lord, where the "epiphany" (divine "manifestation") of his identiity occurred. This happened when the heavens opened, the Spirit appeared in the form of a Dove, and the Father's voice was heard, "This is my January 20 & 21, beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." It was in the context of the Trinitarian self-revelation that 2018 the Son of Mary was identified as the eternal Son from within the Godhead. However, the Western Roman Empire split the "epiphany" (manifestaiton) of Christ, the Light This campaign connects of the World, into two aspects. First, on Christmas, December 25, his manifestation to the Jewish people with Christ, here people, "through whom" he came into the world, as personified in the shepherds in David's field, near Bethlehem. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A) is the process for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The parish community is encouraged to invite those interested to explore this process, and also to support them in prayer as they continue in this spiritual journey with Jesus Christ and His Church. Anyone interested in becoming Catholic may attend these meetings during the year to learn more information about the RCIA process and the Catholic faith. Contact the parish office for further information. Next topic: The Second Coming of Christ + Four Last Things Where: St. Joseph Parish Center Upstairs When: January 11, 2018 - 6:30 p.m.—8:30 p.m.

BUILDING A CULTURE OF VOCATION—THE SECRET OF A VOCATION, Pope Benedict XVI told youth, “lies in the capacity and in the joy of distinguishing [God´s] voice, of listening to and following His voice. But to do this, it is necessary to accustom our heart to recognize the Lord, to hear Him like a person who is near me and who loves me:” Moments of “interior silence in the day-to-day rou- tine” are essential, he said. “But once one has learned to hear this voice and to generously follow it, one fears nothing, he or she knows and feels that God is with him or her, and that He is a Friend, Father, and Brother.”

Pg.14 #20 Some forms of pollution are part of people's daily experience. Exposure to atmospheric pollutants produces a broad spectrum of health hazards, espe- cially for the poor, and causes millions of premature deaths. People take sick, for example, from breathing high levels of smoke from fuels used in cooking or heating. There is also pollution that affects everyone, caused by transport, industrial fumes, substances which contribute to the acidification of soil and water, fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and agrotoxins in general. Technology, which, linked to business interests, is presented as the only way of solving problems pollution creates, when in fact proves incapable of seeing the mysterious network of relations between things and so sometimes solves one problem only to create others. 7 DE ENERO DEL 2018 La Epifanía del Señor Comunidad Hispana de San José LAS LECTURAS DE HOY: LA OFRENDA LECTURAS DIARIAS: • Lunes, 8 de enero: 7 de enero de 2018 DEL DOMINGO FUE: Isaías 42 :1-4, 6-7 Hechos de los apóstoles 10, 34-38 Marcos 1, 7-11 Primer Lectura: Isaías 60: 1-6 24 de diciembre Segunda Lectura: Efesios 3: 2-3a, 5-6 $ 1,941.50 • Martes, 9 de enero: 1 Samuel 1: 9-20 Evangelio: Mateo 2: 1-12 Marcos 1, 21-28 Misión — 24 de diciembre $ 1,712.00 • Miércoles, 10 de enero: 1 Samuel 3: 1-20
