Unlike the Romans, who considered the strait to be the extent of the known world, Spain ventured across the Atlantic Ocean. In the process, they encountered the Americas and established a global empire. This course will investigate the Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms' earliest encounters with the New World, the formation of colonial settlements and governments, and the bi-directional flow of people and goods. Additionally, the class will focus intensely on the cultural and religious challenges that vexed Europe and the Americas during this era. Specifically, we will explore the massive Catholic- Protestant wars on the European continent, as well as the war for souls that took place in Inquisitorial chambers. Mc Intyre (University of Strathclyde) Abstract Pérez-Reverte‟s Alatriste novels seek to educate young Spaniards about their Golden Age. In El sol de Breda, set in 1624-1625, Spanish armies fight to suppress the Dutch Protestant revolt. Narrator Íñigo is a teenage page to the experienced soldier, Alatriste. Traditional commentators like Elliott already see imperial decline, whereas Kamen emphasises that the Spanish Crown could always raise loans and armies. Pérez- Reverte‟s series favours the traditional interpretation. The narrator accuses monarchy, aristocracy and clergy of major failures of leadership. American silver brought only extravagance, the conquistador‟s „get-rich-quick‟ mentality rejected honest work and aristocratic favourites as ministers failed to halt the widespread corruption and incompetence, while Spain persisted in seeing itself as crusading guardian of Catholicism. By 1624 Spain‟s crack regiments were a superb military machine. Soldiers mainly from Germany, Lombardy and Sicily fought brilliantly in Italy, France and Flanders in spite of appalling conditions – including the non-payment of wages, which triggered numerous campaign-weakening mutinies. Spanish military skill could not finally resist the humour and doggedness of the Dutch revolt: in 1648 the Provinces will gain independence from Spain. -

This class meets three hours per week over the course of 14 weeks Number of credits: 4 Course Description This course offers an overview of Spanish History from the year 711, with the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, through 1898, when the last territories of the Spanish Empire were finally lost. These two points in time are of special importance to Spain’s history. The first marks the beginning of the era in which the Iberian Peninsula came to be known as al-Andalus, a powerful Muslim territory that “broke” the homogeneity of Christian Iberia and greatly impacted what Spain would eventually become. The second marks the fall of the Spanish Empire with the loss of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. As a result, this moment also brought a new national focus onto internal, enduring problems, such as the need for modernization, economic development and the conquest of democratic values. The struggle to achieve all of the above was evidently reflected in 20th century Spain. This class fulfils the BU HUB General Education capacities of Historical Consciousness and Global Citizenship 1. The War’s Underbelly Military memoirs have traditionally occupied an ambivalent place for their readers; while for some they were too resentful to be taken seriously, and too roguish (picarescas) to be read as a reliable testimony, for others they succeeded at offering a faithful glimpse of life on the battlefield, neatly capturing the courage and loyalty of the early modern Spanish soldier.1 This ambivalence has had a noticeable impact on their transmission and on their presence in the literary canon(s), as if scholars and editors didn’t quite know what to do with them. Judging by the existing histories of literature, these recollections have been considered neither strictly fictional, nor realistic enough to be deemed historical narrations. With their frequent disregard for dignity and decorum, they have been relegated to second-tier status, sadly forgotten in the shelves of a paradoxical in-betweenness: too ‘fabulous’ to be true, too truthful to be fictional. As a result, few of these texts have until now circulated in modern, reliable editions accompanied by a serious and thorough critical apparatus. Fortunately, our understanding of early modern warfare is different today than what it was three decades ago. -
