While the country was experiencing both turmoil and triumph, a little bit of peace could be found behind the Library doors and comfort enjoyed in the escape of fiction, fantasies, mysteries, and romance novels. On April 19, we will celebrate this momentous occasion with a day of festivities, including a family concert featuring Big Fez and the Surfmatics, recognition of some of our community partners, and a reception. All are welcome to join us for this special event. We have several upcoming events to help celebrate our 50th anniversary. Kristina Gorder of Theoroi, a young professionals group sponsored by the Schubert Club (and now in its fifth year), wrote this preview for MinnPost: “The new musical C. is based on the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, a fictionalized account of the life of a 17th-century novelist and playwright. In the play, Cyrano is a cadet in the French army as well as a brilliantly talented poet and musician. Sadly, he is riddled with self-doubt as a result of his abnormally large nose, which he believes makes him unworthy of love. (Even if your nose is a perfectly reasonable size, we are all occasionally felled by our insecurities.) C. is the second world premiere in Theater Latté Da's new work initiative, NEXT 20/20, a plan to develop 20 new musicals or plays with music within five years. One of the things I love most about the Twin Cities arts community is how it not only embraces but also supports and makes space for new works.

  • Calvin Berger Later, Calvin and Bret Are in Study Hall Chatting About Movies
Calvin Berger Later, Calvin and Bret are in study hall chatting about movies. Rosanna interrupts and asks Calvin to meet her that night ("Don'tcha Think?"). He takes this to mean a date, and shows up with a love poem for her... only to hear her confess her feelings for Matt. She asks Calvin to speak to Matt, since they are both on the wrestling team, and find out if he likes her. Though heartbroken, Calvin agrees ("It Just Wasn't Meant to Happen"). In the locker room the next day, Calvin speaks to Matt, who says he likes Rosanna but gets tongue-tied around girls. Calvin laments having the opposite dilemma: verbal wit without good looks. In a hilarious duet ("We're The Man"), they hatch a scheme to win Rosanna's affection by combining Calvin's words with Matt's looks. In preparation for Matt's first date with Rosanna, Calvin writes love notes for Matt to give her. He tries to coach Matt on what to say but discovers that Matt has a lousy memory... except for rap lyrics. Thus, Calvin must — quite awkwardly — teach Matt through the use of rap ("Never Know"). When the big night comes, their plan works like a charm. But it pains Calvin to see Matt kiss Rosanna. Meanwhile, in a showstopper ("Saturday Alone"), Bret sings of her desire to be with Calvin, instead of home alone. Just then, Calvin calls and invites her over. She shows up at his house dressed to the nines, whereupon he asks her for help writing love notes to Rosanna.

  • Cyrano De Bergerac Is Known for His Way with Words
A PUBLICATION OF THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AT Callboard A Note from the Artistic Director Todd Haimes is will not be a period piece with presentational speechifying in pretty costumes. ese characters will be played as real people, in real clothes, with three-dimensional relationships. Soldiers of the 17th century were not elegant gentlemen with clean feathers in their hats. ey were grimy, masculine, hungry men, aggressive in attitude (and probably quite gnarly in odor). at’s the world that you’ll be seeing in this Cyrano, one in which food and dirt are thrown about in equal measure, and every disagreement has the potential to become a bloody ght at a moment’s notice. Yes, there will be beautiful, witty language, and there will be love and romance, but these elements will shine even more brightly against a backdrop that reeks of realism. Act I- Paris, e Hotel de Bourgogne Two men are in love with the beautiful Roxane: the handsome cadet, Christian, and Cyrano, the clever poet and short-tempered duelist who is endowed Arras Act IV- Arras, the front of the war with a large, bulbous nose. Cyrano challenges two men to duels, demonstrating his expert ghting Despite the severe conditions of the war, Cyrano has been crossing the style while simultaneously thrashing them with his front to deliver love notes to Roxane. De Guiche informs the troops poetic barbs. that the Spaniards will attack that night and the Gascon regiment will all surely perish. Roxane arrives at the front, beckoned by Christian’s letters, and vows to stay and face her death with her new husband.
