  • The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs
I The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs: Lost Races and Racism in American Popular Culture James R. Nesteby Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree in Doctor of Philosophy August 1978 Approved: © 1978 JAMES RONALD NESTEBY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ¡ ¡ in Abstract The Tarzan series of Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), beginning with the All-Story serialization in 1912 of Tarzan of the Apes (1914 book), reveals deepseated racism in the popular imagination of early twentieth-century American culture. The fictional fantasies of lost races like that ruled by La of Opar (or Atlantis) are interwoven with the realities of racism, particularly toward Afro-Americans and black Africans. In analyzing popular culture, Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk-Literature (1932) and John G. Cawelti's Adventure, Mystery, and Romance (1976) are utilized for their indexing and formula concepts. The groundwork for examining explanations of American culture which occur in Burroughs' science fantasies about Tarzan is provided by Ray R. Browne, publisher of The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of American Culture, and by Gene Wise, author of American Historical Explanations (1973). The lost race tradition and its relationship to racism in American popular fiction is explored through the inner earth motif popularized by John Cleves Symmes' Symzonla: A Voyage of Discovery (1820) and Edgar Allan Poe's The narrative of A. Gordon Pym (1838); Burroughs frequently uses the motif in his perennially popular romances of adventure which have made Tarzan of the Apes (Lord Greystoke) an ubiquitous feature of American culture.

THE CASPAK TRILOGY : THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT, THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT, OUT OF TIMES ABYSS PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Edgar Rice Burroughs | 252 pages | 10 Sep 2008 | Glenn Kahley | 9780978891459 | English | Columbus, United States The Caspak Trilogy : The Land That Time Forgot, The People That Time Forgot, Out Of Times Abyss PDF Book You make the call. Which is good, because you wonder when everyone has time to stop and talk. The first has the submarine hijinks and a sort of fun opposites attract subplot. One thing the book does do, is nicely ties into the other two books and brings the series to an overall conclusion at the end. Burroughs had his formula and he stuck to it. Caspak is this way it is because a twist on the prehistoric-life-survives-to-the- present-day- trope was needed and to hell with the causes or the long-term ramifications of the premise. The first story was discovery of a lost island full of dinosaurs and various species of cavemen. See all 5 brand new listings. There was no Professor Challenger or anyone else similarly quirky, interesting, and intelligent to pique my interest. All three stories are linked by Caspak and take us on three different adventures in this marvelous, creative fantasy world dreamed up by Burroughs. They enter the chamber of the Wieroo king, a huge member of the race, and Bradley kills the creature with its own sword. For the series overall, I know it is a product of its time, but surely women had to be offended of how they were portrayed back then.

  • Life on Barsoom
LIFE ON BARSOOM Advanced Fighting Fantasy fan-Gazetteer of Edgar Rice Burroughs' “sword & planet” World of Barsoom with adaptation notes for Bruce Heard's World of Calidar This Gazetteer presents the world of Barsoom, from Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels, adapted to Advanced Fighting Fantasy (2e) roleplaying rule set (by Graham Bottley). The adaptation is mutual, in the sense that I didn't only adapt the setting to the ruleset, but also the ruleset to the setting, as AFF2 is a quick and flexible system, easily adaptable to any specific setting and open to house rules. Most of this Gazetteer will deal only with Burroughs' Barsoom, but the very last Appendix contains my notes for adapting the scenario to the planet Lao Kwei of the World of Calidar, by Bruce Heard, as the two planets have several aspects in common: in fact they are both somewhat inspired by similar fantasies about Mars. Of course readers may choose to use this Gazetteer as they prefer: it can be a stand alone Burroughian world setting or it can be adapted and incorporated in any other suitable roleplaying world, including the World of Calidar. In this last case, please consider that when I prepared this Gazetteer I had available for consultation Calidar publications Under the Great Vault, In Stranger Skies and The Rat Hunter. Maybe in the future new official Lao Kwei publications will make my 1 adaptation not so fitting. Of course I have no control whatsoever on that, so you will have to accept my apologies! • The Land That Time Forgot by Edgar Rice Burroughs Chapter 1
The Land that Time Forgot By Edgar Rice Burroughs Chapter 1 It must have been a little after three o'clock in the afternoon that it happened--the afternoon of June 3rd, 1916. It seems incredible that all that I have passed through--all those weird and terrifying experiences--should have been encompassed within so short a span as three brief months. Rather might I have experienced a cosmic cycle, with all its changes and evolutions for that which I have seen with my own eyes in this brief interval of time--things that no other mortal eye had seen before, glimpses of a world past, a world dead, a world so long dead that even in the lowest Cambrian stratum no trace of it remains. Fused with the melting inner crust, it has passed forever beyond the ken of man other than in that lost pocket of the earth whither fate has borne me and where my doom is sealed. I am here and here must remain. After reading this far, my interest, which already had been stimulated by the finding of the manuscript, was approaching the boiling-point. I had come to Greenland for the summer, on the advice of my physician, and was slowly being bored to extinction, as I had thoughtlessly neglected to bring sufficient reading-matter. Being an indifferent fisherman, my enthusiasm for this form of sport soon waned; yet in the absence of other forms of recreation I was now risking my life in an entirely inadequate boat off Cape Farewell at the southernmost extremity of Greenland.
