We will have more information on this experience during our April meeting, and will express thanks to the several people who provided leadership and willing hands for this important event. Contents 1 Our Show & Sale provides great opportunities for our members to sell their plants and display Pres. Message 1 their exceptional specimens. Board Minutes 2 This activity also enables our society to serve the growing number of succulent gardeners and April Program 3 raise funds to support services to members throughout the year. April Mini-Show 4 You have undoubtedly noticed that this issue of On the Dry Side is both later than usual and March Mini-Show 5 different in appearance. Also, due to technical issues, this issue does not include March Mini- CSSA Show & Sale 6 show Winners. These changes have resulted from the hassle of working with a recent update of computer software. Microsoft Office 365 appears to provide many desirable new capabilities, Open Greenhouse 7 and definitely requires time on the learning curve. Show Winners 8 Our April meeting will feature Stan Verkler’s talk about his recent visit to South Africa. Spring Sale Pics 9 This will be another interesting and informative presentation that adds substantial value to our Officers, Chairs 10 monthly meetings, along with the enjoyment of getting together with friends and growers of succulent plants. -
Marion Garden Rose Garden
Marion Garden Rose Garden The Rose Garden is a work in constant change to demonstrate how to grow and maintain a variety of roses that are suitable for home gardens in the Willamette Valley. Selection of plants has been based on suitability for landscape use, resistance to disease, repeat blooming, and availability to the home gardener. If we find that a rose bush has a lot of disease problems or does not bloom well it is removed. The visitor will find mostly hybrid teas but also floribundas, grandifloras, shrub roses and an English (Austin) rose. There is also one upright climbing rose named ‘Antique’. Two clematis vines (Viola and Asso) have been planted on either side of the climbing rose trellis. Clematis are a good compliment to large climbing roses and add interest and color to the garden. All the rose bushes have ID tags which include the name of the rose, type, any awards it has received, name of the hybridizer, and the year the rose was introduced. There are a couple of roses that do not have ID tags because they were donated and names were not known. They are good disease resistant plants with a good bloom habit so are used for cuttings for rose propagation workshops. There is also a Lonicera fragrantissima (winter honeysuckle, January jasmine, or Chinese honeysuckle) growing on the northwest corner of the rose garden. It has fragrant white flowers in January and February. It was there when this garden was started and is a nice shrub for the home garden. It is pruned in the spring after it finishes blooming. -

Accepted 16 December, 2009 Sambucus ebulus is known as dwarf elder or elderberry. S. ebulus extracts are an important area in drug development with numerous pharmacological functions in the Middle East. However, their pharmacological functions have not been clearly studied. For a long time, S. ebulus has been prescribed in traditional medicines for the treatment of inflammatory reactions, such as hemorrhoid, bites and sore-throat. In addition, S. ebulus has recently been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti- nociceptive, anti-cancer, anti-angiogenic and anti-oxidative activities. Ebulitin, ebulin 1, flavonoid, athocyanin and other components have been isolated from S. ebulus and identified as active ingredients of biological and pharmacological activities. Due to the easy collection of the plant and remarkable biological activities, this plant has become both food and medicine in the coastal area of Iran. This review presents comprehensive analyzed information on the botanical, chemical, toxico- pharmacological and clinical aspects of S. ebulus.
