AUTHOR S PREFACE following notes on Mary s Praise, originally -*- intended only for private devotion and for instruc tions to Religious, have been rearranged and prepared for publication at the urgent request of several devout serve to persons, in the hope that they may promote in greater devotion to our loving Mother, especially Eng land. The work, necessarily compressed to lessen the expense of printing, differs in character from most English works on the subject, inasmuch as it does not contain a series of meditations or reflections on our Lady s life and virtues, nor of devotional exercises in her honour : its aim is rather to show the enthusiasm with which devotion to her has been taken up in all countries and by all classes of " persons, especially in Catholic England, Mary s Dowry." It abounds in matters scriptural, patristic, historical and biographical, and will be found touchingly suggestive of holy thoughts, most helpful in private meditation and in addresses to Sodalists and others. Such a work might easily have been expanded into a volume three times the size, but the price would then have made its purchase prohibitive to many who might wish to possess a copy for private devotion. .CtL viii AUTHOR S PREFACE Fr. S. Marie et la de Drive, J. (" Compagnie Jesus," p. 133) relates that St. John Berchmans made the following request to his friend and brother-scholastic Nicholas Ratka i : "If you live, won t you write some book in honour of our Lady, and particularly in honour of her Immaculate Con " ception ? He added : "I have made a vow to write such a book, and I have in my mind the plan I wish to work out, viz., explaining the figures of the Immaculate Conception, then the direct arguments, then the miracles, etc." Whether Nicholas Ratkai ever carried out this request is but the a unknown ; present writer, who during pro longed stay in Rome often knelt at the shrine of the youth ful Saint, in the church of Sant Ignazio, may be permitted to offer through his hands to our Immaculate Mother this small tribute of loving affection, simple and imperfect as it is, hoping that it may do some little good by making her better known, better loved, and more widely praised. PREFACE MARY IMMACULATE FT is to me a strange phenomenon," wrote the late * Cardinal Newman, " that so many learned and devout men stumble at the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, and I can only account for it by supposing, in matter of fact, they do not know what we mean by the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception." " Cardinal is the learned " The right ; and devout men to whom he refers, in attacking the doctrine of the Imma culate Conception, are assailing it, not in the sense in which it is denned by the Church, but in the sense only in which they themselves fancy it must be denned by Her. There is a proverb which says : "He that understands amiss, concludes worse." This being so, it may not be alto gether out of place to give here in a foreword to this most interesting and edifying volume, all in praise of God s Mother, a short exposition of the doctrine without the knowledge of which it is no easy matter to arrive at a true estimate of Mary s dignity and sanctity. And here, let me observe, that my experience teaches me x PREFACE that one of the chief reasons why " learned and devout men," outside the Church, do not understand the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, is because they misunder stand the doctrine of Original Sin. Not knowing the cannot realize the to the rule not rule, they exception ; the cannot see the recognizing penalty, they privilege ; in other words, not appreciating what we mean by the stain and guilt of Original Sin, they do not and cannot know what is meant by exemption from it. Besides personal sin, which may be mortal or venial, there is another sin called a quasi-personal sin. It is the sin inherited by the human family from Adam, who, as origin and constituted head of the human family, has transmitted to his posterity that state of forfeiture of grace, into which he fell when he transgressed God s law in the Garden of Paradise. Revelation teaches us that Adam, having forfeited for himself through an act of prevarication Sanctifying Grace, together with all its formal effects, and those preternatural gifts, with which God had dowered his being when He created it, has, as our rightly constituted head, trans mitted to us those fatal consequences of his lawlessness. Accordingly, each member of the human family is con ceived and is born in a state of forfeiture and disinherit " ance. Hence the cry of the royal psalmist : Behold I was conceived in iniquity, and in sin did my mother con ceive me." Since Adam s fall, Man, his descendant, comes into this world despoiled of that divine life of grace which finally PREFACE xi develops into the life of glory. Ti]l reinstated in grace, Man, being without supernatural life, is without a super natural end to life. He is a wandering star, and, till grace restores him to divine sonship, he is no heir of God or co-heir with Christ. I have stated the rule let me now pass on to its excep tion. Mary is its exception. When we speak of her Immaculate Conception we mean to say that Mary did not incur the fatal consequences of Adam s fall from Grace mean to that the favour of ; we say she, by special God, was exempted from Original Sin, so that there was no moment of her life, either after or before her birth, in which she was in a state of forfeiture. On the contrary, sinless and stainless in her origin, she started her race for Heaven, enriched with a wealth of grace, short only of infinite. It is not my purpose here to do more than set before the readers of this book what is meant by the Immaculate Conception. Once we begin to realize the meaning of the doctrine, all Catholic outpouring of appreciation, eulogy " and love of God s great masterpiece, the Woman clothed with the Sun," becomes intelligible and reasonable. This volume is a bouquet of flowers offered at Mary s feet her ; they symbolize virtues, they are tokens of our child-like, clinging love of her, who, as she gave to us her Son, can win for us His grace and His love. What she has been in the past, to sinner as well as to saint, may she be to us, who sorely need her help. From her, as from no library, we learn to know the workings of the Sacred xii PREFACE from as from no Heart ; her, Director, we may gather secrets of our and from as from no the sanctity ; her, other mother, we may be sure of guidance in life, of care in sickness, of comfort in sorrow, and of special love and help in death. Never can we tire of lifting up our eyes, our hearts and our voices to this incomparable and ever blessed Mother.     CSCH President’s Address 2012 Church Historical Writing in the English Transatlantic World during the Age of Enlightenment1 DARREN W. SCHMIDT The King’s University College My research stemming from doctoral studies is focused on English- speaking evangelical use, interpretation, and production of church history in the eighteenth century, during which religious revivals on both sides of the North Atlantic signalled new developments on many fronts. Church history was of vital importance for early evangelicals, in ways similar to earlier generations of Protestants beginning with the Reformation itself. In the eighteenth century nerves were still sensitive from the religious and political intrigues, polemic, and outright violence in the seventeenth- century British Isles and American colonies; terms such as “Puritan” and “enthusiast” maintained the baggage of suspicion. Presumed to be guilty by association, evangelical leaders were compelled to demonstrate that the perceived “surprising work of God” in their midst had a pedigree: they accordingly construed their experience as part of a long narrative of religious ebb and flow, declension and revival. Time and time again, eighteenth-century evangelicals turned to the pages of the past to vindicate and to validate their religious identity.2 Browsing through historiographical studies, one is hard-pressed to find discussion of eighteenth-century church historical writing. There is general scholarly agreement that the Protestant Reformation gave rise to a new historical interest. In answer to Catholic charges of novelty, Historical Papers 2012: Canadian Society of Church History 188 Church Historical Writing in the English Transatlantic World Protestants critiqued aspects of medieval Catholicism and sought to show their continuity with early Christianity.

Since 1997 marks the Tbi-centenary of his death, this is a tribute to a monk who was a mathematician and astronomer of international renown, for many years the doyen of the English Vicars Apostolic, and the father of the American hierarchy, through his consecration of Bishop John Carroll in 1790. No comprehensive biography of Walmesley has ever been attempted, for aspiring biographers have been daunted by the assertion that whilst he was at Wardour Castle, all his library, archives and papers went up in flames when the chapel and house at Bath were fired by the mob during the Gordon Riots in 1780. Because of his major involvement in the conflict between the Catholic Committee and some of the Vicars Apostolic in the last two decades of the eighteenth century, his later career has received much attention from scholars. His contribution to that conflict will not, therefore, be addressed here. What follows is an attempt to gather together what singed biographical fragments remain of those earlier and perhaps happier years of a man whom public opinion regarded in his mature years as the rising hope of stern unbending English Catholic conservatism [1].1 F A M I L Y Charles Walmesley was born at Westwood Hall on the outskirts of Wigan, Lancashire, on 13 January 1722, the seventh son, and youngest but one, of twelve children, of the wealthy Lancashire Catholic squire and Wigan alderman, John Walmesley and his wife, Mary Greaves.

    GOLD TRIED 550 TIMES IN THE FIRE Timothy Alborn Historians inevitably face the challenge of selecting a subset of primary sources to stand for a much larger body of research. This challenge is magnified in the case of the history of ideas, where the need to provide closer readings tends to diminish that already small sample size. My article, “The Greatest Metaphor Ever Mixed,” distilled hundreds of sources from numerous genres down to a few dozen. A section on the various uses of the metaphor of gold tried in the fire, for instance, quotes twenty-eight sources that employ that metaphor, or roughly five percent of the sources I consulted. To find all these sources, I pursued two parallel tracks. The first was part of a larger project on the cultural and economic history of gold in Britain from 1780 to 1850, which will soon be published by Oxford University Press. For this project, I spent the last eight years looking for references to gold wherever they showed up: in treatises, novels, sermons, speeches, and newspaper articles, among many other sources. The bulk of my research utilized such online databases as Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Making of the Modern World, and Google Books. After realizing, a few years into this research, that gold appeared frequently and with interesting variations in numerous religious contexts, I did more targeted search in these databases (see my full list of search terms below for “gold tried in the fire”). In a blog post accompanying a different article I published two years ago in the Journal of Victorian Culture, I made a first foray into providing access to the larger cultural world that historians must curtail in order to “see the forest for the trees.” (link).

Pell developed a species of apples, the Newton Pippin, grown in an orchard of more than 25,000 trees. The Pell Coat of Arms included a pelican piercing its own breast to feed its young, an ancient symbol of the Eucharist. The Redemptorist community, still growing at the turn of the century, looked at property in New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania before settling here. In 1903, they paid $57,000 for the property. The Redemptorist order bought a quarrying operation in Port Deposit, MD, to produce the granite, used in this building. Construction of the original building began in 1904 and was finished in 1907. The wing on the south end was added in later years. The property has expanded to the present 412 acres on the Hudson River. Redemptorists used the building as a seminary for the training of priests. After initial formation at St. Mary's in Northeast, PA, for six years, students made a year-long long Novitiate in Ilchester, MD, and then spent six years here at Mount St. Alphonsus. The property contained many buildings in earlier times when cattle, horses, pigs, chickens and crops that included corn, potatoes, apples and grapes were raised.     “My brain is on fire!” Religious toleration after the Gordon Riots in Burney’s Cecilia (1782). Like any good novel centred on an inheritance, Frances Burney’s second novel Cecilia; or, memoirs of an heiress (1782) begins with a series of deaths. Having lost both of her parents some years before, Cecilia ‘lately entered into the one-and-twentieth year of her age’ had passed the last four years of her minority ‘consigned […] to the care of the Dean of ----, her uncle.’1 Several weeks before the novel begins, her last earthly relation perishes. Yet this loss is not without its comforts: thanks to her father and uncle, when she comes of age in a few weeks, she’ll have £10,000 and, should any future husband take her surname, an guaranteed income of £3,000 a year. Her arrival in London to the care of a motley cast of guardians soon brings with it an obvious stumbling block: She falls in love with Mortimer Delvile, only for his haughty if impoverished family to refuse the match of their only son on the basis of the name clause, seeing only the extinction of an illustrious name. Cecilia, as scholars have well established, is a deeply political novel, alive to the injustices of a new market society. Yet the influence of The Gordon Riots of June 1780, which shook London and Bath, filled the family’s correspondence, and which took place mere months before Burney began work on the novel remain – like the question of religion more generally – underexplored. In this paper, however, I read Cecilia as a response to the family’s experiences.
