Descendants of Slavery Resolution
A RESOLUTION CALLING UPON BROWN TO ATTEMPT TO IDENTIFY AND REPARATE THE DESCENDANTS OF SLAVES ENTANGLED WITH THE UNIVERSITY Author: Jason Carroll, UCS President Cosponsors: Jai’el Toussaint, Zanagee Artis, Samra Beyene, Ana Boyd, Renee White, Zane Ruzicka WHEREAS in 2003, Brown University President Ruth Simmons appointed a Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice charged to investigate and prepare a report about the University’s historical relationship to slavery and the transatlantic slave trade; WHEREAS, the final report by the Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice, presented to President Simmons in October of 2006, found that: I. University Hall, Brown University’s oldest building, according to construction records, was built by enslaved workers (13)1; II. the school’s first president, Rev. James Manning, arrived in Rhode Island accompanied by a personal slave (12); III. “many of the assets that underwrote the University’s creation and growth derived, directly and indirectly, from slavery and the slave trade” (13); IV. the Brown family of Providence, the University’s namesakes, were slave owners (14); V. in 1736, James Brown sent the first ever slave ship to sail from Providence, the Mary, to Africa, which carried a cargo of enslaved Africans to the West Indies before returning to Rhode Island with slaves for the Brown family’s own use (15); VI. the Brown family actively participated in the purchasing and selling of captives individually and in small lots, usually in the context of provisioning voyages (15); VII. in 1759, Obadiah Brown, Nicholas Brown, and John Brown, along with a handful of smaller investors, dispatched another ship to Africa which trafficked enslaved Africans before being captured by the French (15) 1 All numbered references are to the 2006 Slavery and Justice report by the Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice. -

What originally began with faith leaders as a means to ensure equitable access to COVID-19-related care and resources has since expanded, establishing subcommittees focused on recommending strategies to increase equity citywide. James Brown,1 Jr., great grandson of Chad Brown, and second son of the Rev. James and Mary (Harris) Brown, was born in Providence, March 22, 1698, and died there April 27, 1739. He married, December 21, 1722, Hope Power (b. Jan. 4, 1702—d. June 8, 1792), daughter of Nicholas and Mercy (Tillinghast) Power, and grand-daughter of the Rev. Pardon Tillinghast. With his younger brother, Obadiah, he established the Com¬ mercial House of the Browns, of Providence, lv. 1., that later became Nicholas Brown & Co., Brown & Benson,-and finally Brown & Ives. There were five sons and one daughter. The eldest son, James, died in York, Va., in 1750, while master of a vessel. The other four, Nicholas, Joseph, John and Moses, later familiarly known as the “Four Brothers/' acquired great distinction in private and public affairs, and were partners in the enterprises established by their father and uncle, that they largely extended and increased. The daughter, Mary, married Dr. John Vander- light, of Steenwyk, Holland, chemist, and a graduate of Ley¬ den University, who later became associated with his brothers- in-law in the manufacture of candles, having brought with him a knowledge of the Dutch process of separating spermaceti from its oil. -

Navigating the Atlantic World: Piracy, Illicit Trade, and the Construction of Commercial Networks, 1650-1791 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University by Jamie LeAnne Goodall, M.A. Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Newell, Advisor John Brooke David Staley Copyright by Jamie LeAnne Goodall 2016 Abstract This dissertation seeks to move pirates and their economic relationships from the social and legal margins of the Atlantic world to the center of it and integrate them into the broader history of early modern colonization and commerce. In doing so, I examine piracy and illicit activities such as smuggling and shipwrecking through a new lens. They act as a form of economic engagement that could not only be used by empires and colonies as tools of competitive international trade, but also as activities that served to fuel the developing Caribbean-Atlantic economy, in many ways allowing the plantation economy of several Caribbean-Atlantic islands to flourish. Ultimately, in places like Jamaica and Barbados, the success of the plantation economy would eventually displace the opportunistic market of piracy and related activities. Plantations rarely eradicated these economies of opportunity, though, as these islands still served as important commercial hubs: ports loaded, unloaded, and repaired ships, taverns attracted a variety of visitors, and shipwrecking became a regulated form of employment. In places like Tortuga and the Bahamas where agricultural production was not as successful, illicit activities managed to maintain a foothold much longer. -

Removal of that canvas from Rhode Island to the Midwest was a source of regret to some and perhaps relief to other citizens, for artist John Greenwood had captured for posterity a memorable bacchanalia of Rhode Islanders who — by the long arm of coincidence — found themselves in port in the Dutch colony of Surinam sometime during the late 1750s. Most participants in that gala would later hold prominent positions in the civil and military history of His Majesty's colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and during the American Revolution. Identification of the revelers is part of the tradition of the Jenckeses, a family distinguished in the life of Rhode Island for generations. Until its sale to the City Art Museum, that picture had always been in the possession of John Jenckes' descendents, who sold it with great reluctance. Aside from its value as a work of art, associational interest makes Sea Captain Carousing in Surinam a provocative study. It is the purpose of this paper to examine if it were possible or probable that all or some Newport and Providence merchants and mariners, traditionally identified, could have been in Surinam at the time Greenwood depicted them in such Hogarthian attitudes. -

From the time of their arrival in Rhode Island's waters in February, the Gaspee and her commander, Lieutenant William Dudingston, had been the cause of much commercial frustration of local merchants. Dudingston was insolent, described by one local newspaper as more imperious and haughty than the Grand Turk himself. Past accounts of his pettish nature followed him from port to port.[1] The lieutenant was also shrewd. Aware that owners of seized vessels — rather than navy captains deputized in the customs service — would triumph in any cause brought before Rhode Island's vice-admiralty court, Dudingston had favored the district vice-admiralty court at Boston instead, an option available to customs officials since 1768.[2] Aside from threatening property of Rhode Islanders through possible condemnation of seizures, utilization of the court at Boston invigorated opposition to trials out of the vicinage, a grievance which had irritated merchants within the colony for some time.[3] Finally the lieutenant was zealous — determined to be a conscientious customs officer even if it meant threatening Rhode Island's flourishing illicit trade in non-British, West-Indian molasses. Governor Joseph Wanton of Rhode Island observed that Dudingston also hounded little packet boats as they plied their way between Newport and Providence. -

Campbell Foreseeable Futures#7 Position Papers from Artists and Scholars in Public Life Dear Reader, I am honored to introduce Foreseeable Futures # 7, James Campbell’s Navigating the Past: Brown University and the Voyage of the Slave Ship Sally, 1764-65. Campbell was chair of Brown University’s Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice, charged by President Ruth Simmons in 2003 to investigate the University’s historical relationship to slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. The narrative around which Campbell organizes the Committee’s findings here is the 1764 voyage of the slave ship Sally from Providence to West Africa, where Captain Esek Hopkins “acquired” 196 men, women, and children intended for sale as slaves in Rhode Island. The Sally was owned by the four Brown brothers, benefactors of the College of Rhode Island, which in 1804 was renamed Brown University in recognition of a substantial gift from one of the brothers’ sons. The Committee’s willingness to resurrect that sober history and more, to organize public events to reflect on that legacy, exemplifies what Chancellor Nancy Cantor of Syracuse University calls scholarship in action. The Committee also issued concrete recommendations regarding ways that Brown students, faculty, and staff can continue to respond to that legacy in the present. INTRODUCTION One of the missions of The Friends of Valley Forge Park is the promotion of our historical heritage so that the spirit of what took place over two hundred years ago continues to inspire both current and future generations of all people. It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we are able to offer to the public this chronology of events of The American Revolution. While a simple listing of facts, it is the hope that it will instill in some the desire to dig a little deeper into the fascinating stories underlying the events presented. The following pages were compiled over a three year period with text taken from many sources, including the internet, reference books, tapes and many other available resources. A bibliography of source material is listed at the end of the book. This publication is the result of the dedication, time and effort of Mr. Frank Resavy, a long time volunteer at Valley Forge National Historical Park and a member of The Friends of Valley Forge Park. As with most efforts of this magnitude, a little help from friends is invaluable.
