CHINATOWN After September 11th FOREWORD Nearly seven months after September 11th, New Yorkers of all backgrounds continue to feel the pains of the unfortunate loss of life while we work hard to heal our wounds and rebuild our city. The impact of September 11th has certainly been pervasive beyond words, as has been the outpouring of heroism and philanthropy demonstrated by so many ordinary people, uniformed as well as civilian, during these trying times. All of us at the Asian American Federation pay our respects to those who have lost or given their lives, offer our best wishes to those families who have endured the tragedy, and salute the fine spirit of New York. The lingering aftermath of September 11th is deeply felt in neighborhoods close to Ground Zero, including Chinatown. During the first three months after September 11th, stories abounded about the desperation of many low-wage workers who became unemployed and the resolution of many small business owners who worried about their firms’ prospects.

February 24, 2017 President Donald J. Trump The White House United States of America Dear President Trump, Since the founding of this country, science has been fundamental to the advancement of sound policy and economic prosperity and innovation. Science improves the lives of Americans, stimulates our economy, advances our understanding of our world, and protects us and our families from harm. As you select advisors that will help you to draft a blueprint for American policy, we urge you to make appointing a Science Advisor an immediate priority. Science is in the DNA of the United States. It plays an integral part in our nation's security, economic growth, public health, and infrastructure. Appointing a Science Advisor quickly will enable the Administration to maximize investments in science and develop a strategic plan that secures America’s leadership in science. The Science Advisor will assist your administration in driving innovation, and provide scientifically sound solutions to the pressing issues facing our nation today; including updating deteriorating infrastructure, combatting health epidemics, providing clean air and water, and securing valuable natural resources and minerals. Appointing a Science Advisor is a smart investment for our nation and for keeping our position as a scientific leader globally. Due to the integral role of the Science Advisor, we urge you to appoint an individual with a strong scientific background who understands the rigorous scientific method, the need for evidence-based science, and who can leverage the collaborative nature of the scientific community and the value of scientific research in shaping America’s future. As supporters of science, we urge you to work with our scientific organizations as you commence the selection process and the important task of advancing America’s scientific enterprise.

“This chameleon of an event not only retains its eclectic nature, it builds upon it as needed. In this city titles in some major festivals can be too predictable. This is not the case in this refreshing mélange.” Howard Feinstein, Filmmaker Magazine THEN AND NOW: IN 1975 ASIAN CINEVISION WAS FOUNDED AS CCTV (CHINESE CABLE TELEVISION) PRODUCING A WEEKLY 30 MINUTE COMMUNITY AFFAIRS TV SHOW AIRING ON THE WARNER AMEX CABLE NETWORK. THE FIRST ASIAN AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SCREENED JUST 42 FILMS IN 1978. TODAY 40 YEARS LATER AAIFF SCREENS CLOSE TO 100 TITLES FROM NEARLY 30 COUNTRIES OVER TEN DAYS IN JULY. PHOTOS COURTESY OF (L) CORKY LEE AND (R) LIA CHANG. THE ANNUAL ASIAN AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (AAIFF) is New York’s leading showcase for the Asian American and Asian independent cinema. Presented by Asian CineVision (ACV), the AAIFF is the first and longest-running festival in the U.S. to showcase the moving image work by artists of Asian descent and about the Asian American experience. AAIFF premiered in the seminal summer of 1978 at the Henry Street Settlement in New York City. Ed Koch had been elected mayor, the first cellular mobile phone is introduced, serial killer David Berkowitz, “Son of Sam,” is convicted of murder, GREASE, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS were the blockbusters of their day. Forty years later, the AAIFF has grown to include films and video from more than 30 coun- tries, answering a growing need for social understanding, cultural diversity in American life, and independent cinema. AAIFF has played a vital role in discovering and nurturing such acclaimed talent as Oscar Award winners Ang Lee, Jessica Yu, Steven Okazaki, Ruby Yang and Chris Tashima; Os- car Award nominees Christine Choy and Rene Tajima-Pena, Frieda Lee Mock, Arthur Dong, Zhang Yimou; and mainstream entertainment directors Wayne Wang, Mira Nair, and Justin Lin.

2015 Distinguished Artist Alex Galick, Sara Ochs, Jeannie Lander, Kurt Kwan Yellow Fever, 2013 Directed by Rick Shiomi 2015 Distinguished Artist Sheena Janson and Alex Galick Into the Woods, 2012 Directed by Rick Shiomi 2015 McKnight Distinguished Artist 5 Introduction “Minnesota would be the last place in the world I’d want to end up,” Rick Shiomi wrote in 2011, remembering his thoughts after a 1990 visit to Minneapolis during which he was unhappily surprised by the city’s lack of an Asian American theater community. That visit turned out to be a critical point in what Shiomi calls his Zen journey as an artist: A few months later, he came back to Minnesota for another visit, and two years after that he was here for good, helping to start building the community he had wanted so much to find. “Such are the ironies of my own journey — that realities I believed so remote from my own existence became the very framework for two decades of my life in theater,” he says. As one of the five artists and administrators who founded Theater Mu in 1992, Shiomi plunged into helping to develop new Asian American actors and playwrights — and into expanding his own artistic horizons. Already an accomplished playwright and taiko drum player when he arrived in Minnesota, during his 20 years at the helm of Mu (later Mu Performing Arts) he evolved into a director, teacher, arts administrator, and mentor. That last role may have the farthest reach of Shiomi’s many lasting legacies. Ask anybody in the performing arts community — in Minnesota; in Vancouver, BC; in San Francisco; in New York; in Philadelphia — about Rick Shiomi and you will hear one word over and over: generous.

Next on our stage: M. BUTTERFLY EXIT, PURSUED BY A WEST SIDE STORY MARCH 19-APRIL 19 BEAR JULY 16-AUG. 23 MAY 14-JUNE 14 HIGHLIGHTS ! A ! Companion Guide to M. ! Butterfly by !David Henry Hwang ! ! ! Highlights is researched and written by Rebecca Wallace.! More about City Lights: cltc.org. Synopsis Drawn from real-life events, this modern classic weaves realism, ritual, and vivid theatricality into a haunting tale of a French diplomat’s gradual, inevitable submission to the charms of a Chinese opera star who personifies his fantasy vision of submissive oriental sexuality. The play underscores the irony of that fantasy as it parallels the events of Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly and becomes a powerful exploration of East-West relations and the romanticism that clouds and complicates them to this day. Note: M. Butterfly is a powerful, provocative play with full nudity, sexuality, and adult themes. It’s intended for mature audiences ages 17 and up. French diplomat Rene Gallimard (Kit Wilder, center) gets swept up in a love affair with a Chinese opera singer in M. Butterfly. Kurogo dancers (Lee-Ron, left, and Jessica Do) help set the scene. Photos by Mike Ko. ! !Characters Gallimard (Kit Wilder): As a young student, Gallimard was voted “least likely to be invited to a party.” Now he’s the talk of the town, telling his story from a Paris prison cell while the world buzzes about his notorious affair with a Chinese opera singer. An awkward French diplomat, he has always dreamed of the ideal woman, !like the ones he sees in operas where characters will sacrifice anything for love.
