Research activities and interests

1. Anticancer and immune modulatory activities of plant derived Products:

The phenols, isoflavones, alkaloids, lectins, tannins, lignins, terpenoids are reported as anticancer agents. The current practice of cancer treatment involves surgery, radiation, and drugs. The anticarcinogenic drugs give relief to the patient but have innumerable side effects as they act on the normal cells along with cancer cells. A successful anticancer agent should act only on cancer cells without harming the normal cells. Experiments on compounds of plant origin have yielded positive response in this direction. On this line work has been initiated on medicinal plants for potent anticancer agents. This constitutes the part of MRP funded research project by UGC, New Delhi.

2. Bioactive peptides of Plant origin:

Bioactive peptides act as defense proteins. Genetically modified disease resistant varieties of plants are being developed by insertion of genes of such defense proteins. These peptides are also shown to have immunomodulatory actions. Research work on bioactive peptides has been taken up currently. This constitutes a UGC MRP, started from October 2012.

3. Microbial enzymes:

Enzyme catalyzed processes operating at high temperature result at higher reaction rates and hydrolysis efficiencies. Therefore thermoalkalophilic enzymes find wide applications in industries. Thermoalkalophilic cellulase free xylanases have been purified and characterized. These enzymes are used in bleaching process of kraft pulp for removal of xylan and lignin protecting the cellulose fibers minimizing the use of chlorinating agents for bleaching the pulp. The chlorinating agents in the effluents of the paper mill are toxic to the flora and fauna. Thus cellulase free xylanases find application in pollution control. This research project was funded by AICTE, New Delhi. Microbial proteinases, glycosidases, ligninases are also being investigated.
