The Prez’s Piece Darren Linton

Wow!! That sums up the first edition of the Parkfield Press for 2012/13. Great job by Swiz in particular and Faron, and all other contributors. It's going to be hard to maintain that standard, but I have full faith in you.

First of all, on field things are picking up. Training numbers are up and with many players expected back in the next few weeks, competition for places will start heating up. Jarryd is doing a wonderful job and Spolly has marshalled the troops to a magnificent first up win over the reigning Turf 1 Premiers Berwick. Special mention must go to our juniors playing senior cricket for the first time. All stood up to whatever was thrown at them. From a personal point of view, I’m indebted to several. Most are from well known Parkfield families and you'll hear a lot more from the Payne, Hill, Sturzaker's and McCabes in the coming years.

Off field we're heading into a very busy period where we need your support more than ever. We don't expect you to attend every function, but please try to get to as many as you can, even if it's just to show your face for an hour or two.

Coming up are:

Masters - Sunday, November 4th from midday

MELBOURNE CUP - Our biggest social day, tell your friends, we cater for all ages and will keep you amused all day TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH from 10.00am until late....Premiers Club members who attend receive a $10 betting voucher.

5

20/20 - ROUND 1- Wednesday November 7th from 5.00pm. Come along and see Spolly tear them apart and the 2 B's, Belly and Birdy rip through them.

Friday, November 9th from 8.00pm. Ant Hardie's charity bike ride fund raiser/cocktail night.

Also

$1000 draw, tickets on sale now, see Tony Payne or Rick Price. Two free tickets to whoever sells the most tickets. Will be drawn on Sunday, December 2nd at Parkfield while the Masters are battling against Cranbourne. .

The $2 raffle ticket sales need to pick up. All we ask is that everyone tries to sell two books. If you don't have a book, see Bek Hill asap. Again there are prizes for those who sell the most tickets. Only 5 people have returned their books so far which isn;t good enough.

Finally, special thanks must go to Swiz and Fordy for their efforts to attract sponsors. We've managed to gain cash and goods for match reports. Everyone loves to hear their name read out in front of their peers and through Fordy and Swiz's great work, we can now reward our best performers. Please support our sponsors buy visiting their stores and using their products.

They include... Willowizard cricket gear A&L Windows JUCE fruit juices Noble Park Aquatic Centre Bendigo Bank, Dingley RACV Reading Cinemas Dandenong Noble Pizza Subway BW Plumbing Noble Park RSL

Cheers,

Cooking With Bob

Chili Dog

Cooking Time

30 minutes

Ingredients (serves 4)

 500 g of bacon, cut into small pieces  1 large onion, chopped  1 kg beef mince  4 chopped garlic cloves  500 ml of tomato sauce  1 cup of beef broth  2 tbsp of honey  2 tbsp of sweet paprika  1 tbsp ground cumin  1 tbsp of chilli powder  1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)  Salt  Hot dogs (As many as you require)  Buns (As many as you require)  Chopped red onion, for garnish  Shredded cheddar cheese, for garnish

Method

1. Make the chilli first. Fry the bacon over medium heat until it begins to get crispy, then add the chopped onions and fry over heat, stirring often, until they begin to brown. Add in the mince and stir in well. Cook this, still over high heat and stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned. This will take a few minutes. When the beef is about halfway browned, toss in the chopped garlic and mix well.

2. Once the beef is well browned, add the tomato sauce, honey and beef broth. Add all the spices except the cayenne and stir well. Bring to a simmer and taste. Add salt or the cayenne if it needs it. You can of course add much more cayenne or chilli powder if you like things really spicy, but best to taste first and then add more.

3. Let the chilli cook on a gentle simmer for at least 30 minutes before you start grilling the hot dogs.

4. Grill your hot dogs over medium until they get a light char. Grill the hot dog buns briefly if you want – no more than a minute, as they will burn fast.

5. Dog goes in bun, chilli goes on top, sprinkle on chopped red onion and shredded cheese, and have at it! Bob’s says when grilling hot dogs, use tongs instead of a fork. This will stop the hot dog from drying out.

Senior News

Seniors at Parkfield could have not started any better with first ball of the season seeing Imran finding the edge of one of the Hampton Park openers which was well caught by Phil Drew at 1st slip. Unfortunately that’s as good as it got as the heavens opened up washing out the first two weeks.

Round Two was successful for the club with Turf 1 and B Grade starting the year in great fasion with excellent wins over Berwick and Silverton respectively. Turf 4 were in a winning position until Fountain Gate didn’t get the covers down on the second week, while D Grade nearly came back from the death to just fall short of a reverse outright.

There were some brilliant individual performances and we would like to congratulate Parkfield President Darren Linton on his 113 as well as 6 against Silverton. Also congratulations to Belly for taking 7 against Berwick.

Training numbers continue to improve and with daylight savings now in, there is more time to work on improving our skills so we can give it our all on match day. Jarryd has drawn up the following plan as a guide to training.

Warm Up: As Long As You Need To Get Loose Batting: 10 minutes - 15 minutes Bowling: 20 minutes (Depending on who you are) Fielding: 70 % - In your main position 20 % - In your second position 10 % - General Skills

Make sure you are switched on from the moment we start training until our fun session at the end. Only by doing this can we help each other improve and become the best cricketers we can be.

Also lets make sure all Seniors are getting back down to the club after a game. There is nothing better than celebrating our successes with our mates. Make sure you check the website for the up to date events calendar.

Finally if you’re a senior who hasn’t sponsored anyone yet, it would be greatly appreciated if you were to sponsor one of our juniors. We are sure it will do them a world of good and makes them feel appreciated & could possible help you win the Dom’s Double Day. 10

Junior News

Wow, it has been a massive October for the juniors at Parkfield with many off- field changes.

The biggest change is we have merged our Under 11’s and 13’s with Southern Pirates for the season. As we had only half the numbers required to fill these sides and were trying to avoid having to combine 11’s & 13’s we managed to come up with a plan with Pirates that suits both clubs. This season our 11’s will play home games on a Friday Night at Wachter Res and Under 13’s will be playing at Yarraman.

The combined teams had their first training session together last Monday and all went really well. I wish both the Parkfield and Southern Pirates Under 11’s & 13’s all the best for the season.

While I am discussing Under 13’s we welcome new coach Wayne Perera. Many thanks to him for putting his hand up and taken on this important role. I also thank Faron and Pat for the support they are giving Wayne.

The club is currently looking for an Under 11’s coach and anyone who is available to assist on a Friday night please let me know.

Under 15’s have started the season and with a couple knew players joining up, things are starting to fall into place. Payney has been working the boys hard at training and hopefully this will produce good results on the field. I congratulate Rohan Sharma on being awarded captaincy and Riley Payne as his Vice- and Brandon Sturzaker as Deputy Vice-Captain.

Under 17’s are slowly getting numbers together and I thank Travis and Daniel with their work with this. The boys & Jordy were competitive in their first game, with great signs of things to come from Turf debutants Gavin & Rahul as well as Captain Travis D’Souza and Vice-Captain Daniel Banhidi. I would finally like to thank Phil, Steve, Shaun and Faron for all their support at training.

TURF 1: PARKFIELD V BERWICK

Sam Stiglec of the Dandenong Journal captures Spolly doing what he does best as he puts another ball to the boundaryas the champ closes in on another half century. Fordy tries to help the ball along, as he plays at a legside . Jack isn’t as lucky as he becomes one of Ryan Crawford’s four victims for the afternoon.

DOWN AT DUNBLANE:

Faron & Shaun play FIFA during a wash out. Steve shows off his black eye he got from Turf 4, though rumour has it, it was actually from Shaun throwing his controller at Steve after losing a game of FIFA!

Poker is back at Parkfield and the boys are happy to show who knows when to hold them and when to fold them. Birdy is enjoying showing DDCA cricketers how it’s done though with Harry & Johny returning to the Poker table, he might not find it all that easy. Brodie shows the boys he legally can donate Phil’s hard earned money to the cause!

18

The Faz Files Rumours, Home Truths & Funny Stories

We all know good old Fordy claims to proclaim how smart he is all the time, even when we’re working. While I was at work I had 28 e-mails in a space of an hour. Started with Dags organising a meeting for the committee, continued by Fordy saying it better not interfere with poker. Which lead to Fordy bragging about how good he is. 26 emails later Birdy senior (Richard Price) and then Adam telling poor young Fordy off, which of course stoped all emails from the Turf One opening batsman. All jokes aside, The Faz Files appreciates all the work Fordy does for the club, organising sponsorship for us so we can get on and play cricket. Good work Fordy.

Phil Drew the great man himself has copped a fair bit of stick about his catching, thanks to the self proclaimed legend of Parkfield Mick Hardy. Unfortunately Poor Philip didn't get any help from the legend with the catching side of things. Thanks to willows coaching Phil got guidance to improve his catching took a catch in his first game this season. A few hours of drinking later that Phil night stuck it up Mick saying something along the lines of, see Mick you said I couldn't catch, how many catches did you take this season? Keep it up Phil.

19

Training has changed a bit this season from no training on rainy days to soccer and rugby for three hours (Five if you count Jack’s two hours of throw downs in the dark). Which I thought was awesome and all those who showed up had a ball. So why am I talking about this? Willow decided we can split the teams in the following formation, Black vs Whites (I thought the apartheid was over). In all seriousness none of the boys had a problem with this though how did Swiz and Birdie Junior (Rodney Bird) end up on the dark side? Willow’s explanation was since Swiz is Eastern European, that makes him black (The question has to be asked, what is the coach learning at Law School?). Still that doesn’t explain Birdy’s selection. He was happy to say it was because he is black from the waist down which has now been confirmed by the Turf 1 boys after celebrating their win against Berwick with the traditional group shower. We look forward to more interesting ways of splitting teams on those rainy evenings and to those who weren’t there at training, even if it's raining we will still do something that would be better than sitting on couch at home.

An Ex-Club President has been setting a good example by already being late to 2 Sunday games. Think he might want to lay off the Saturday night drinks a little, as age maybe just catching up to him.

Little Isabella watching her old man "the champ" play. Paddy asks her ‘Isabella who's pretty?’ Her reply was daddy's not. She also added second’s later, ‘daddy dresses bad!!!’ I guess it could be worst. It’s not like she said why do Bobble heads play cricket?

So that's all from me this edition of Faz Files. Feel free to pass on any interesting things me that have happened down at Parkfield.

Parkfield’s Past A Trip Down Memory Lane

The second month of the cricket season has been a successful time for Parkfield Cricket Club over the past eight seasons. Over this period our Turf 1 has played 15 games for 8 wins, 4 losses and 3 draws by washout.

Of the 15 games the Turf 1 boys have played in November since 04/05, we have played local rivals Springvale South 4 times with the legend unfortunately in their favour at 1 win Parkfield, 2 wins Springvale South and a draw. We have enjoyed better results against Buckley Ridges with the boys not dropping a game to the Dandy club in November, 2 wins and a draw from 3 games which will hopefully giving the boys some extra confidence as they face them first up this month..

Dale Harris has once again been Turf 1’s most capped playing since November ’04 representing Parkfield 14 times, equalled with Payney. Dale has lead Parkfield 10 times during this period however it’s Hubba who boasts an unbeaten record when skippering thee boys with 3 wins and a draw from his four games. The most interesting stat from a captain point of view is the toss. When Parkfield has lost the toss during this period, they have won the game. Five occasions this has happened in the past 8 years and the hope is Spolly calls it wrong so Parkfield can continue this trend.

Dale also leads the leads the way in the run scoring department making 478 runs. Dale has averaged nearly 40 in November in the past 8 years and the boys will be hoping he puts the whites on for this period. Amazingly of the guys to make over 100 runs during this period, only Mick Hardie has a better November average 43 a hit in Turf 1. Current players Steven Spoljaric and Ryan Nugara are yet to trouble the scorers in November.

Parkfield champion spinner Shane Doig has continues to defy the logic that spinners don’t do well early in the year taking 33 wickets for Parkfield during this time. What is more surprising is Hubba comes in second on 14 which obviously shows that the November pitches are made for the slower bowlers.

Trip Down Memory Lane takes a look at the Round 5 Turf 1 match between Parkfield and Hallam at Dunblane. After sending Hallam in and seeing them get off to a solid start, Shane Doig delivered one the great spin bowling spells Parkfield has seen. Doigy’s flight and guile reduced Hallam to 126, as he took 7 for 41.

Though this was no doubt a fantastic performance by Doigy, the job was only half done and when Parkfield fell to 3/17, it looked like Doigys’s masterclass was going to count for nothing. In came Dale Harris and with the support from Parkfield captain Brad Houghton and batsmen Tony Payney, Parkfield chased down the total and with it gained the respect of the league to help put in on the path of Premiership Glory!

We hope the following recount from the game by Parkfield legends Tony Payne and Shane Doig will inspire the boys to a win against Hallam when they face them in Round 5 at Hallam Recreation Reserve.

TONY PAYNE’S ACCOUNT OF THE GAME Our bowling stocks were decimated with injuries to experienced Turf 1 opening bowlers in Shane McLean and Daniel Ferguson. Opening the bowling were two young guys in Travis Bone and Mick Ramsay in their 2nd and 3rd games of Turf 1. There was lots of pressure on Doigy as our main bowler and he delivered with a wonderful 26 overs. He bamboozled the Hallam batsman with his flight and guile. Bowling Hallam captain and gun bat in Steve Chapman was a vital wicket.

Chasing 124 Parkfield were under pressure at 3 for 17 when Dale Harris strode to the crease. Dale was coming off consecutive ducks in his previous 2 innings. Dale had actually been dropped to the 2nds on the Thursday night but was recalled to the 1sts when Stuart Willey was a late withdrawal due to injury.

Dale and Hubba got together and put on 124 with Dale making a majestic 103 not out. It was his first Turf 1 century in about 12 years. It was a major turning point for Dale who made 60 the next week and another century in round 8.

Fair to say that Eminem’s ‘Without Me’ got a fair workout in the clubrooms that night with the lyrics changed to “Guess who’s back? Harry’s back. 25

SHANE DOIG’S ACCOUNT OF THE GAME I remember this game very well, not so much for my personal game but what it meant to Harry and the Parkfield Cricket Club moving forward.

I think Harry might have been coming off a couple of ducks in a row and had been dropped on the Thursday night. Stuart Willey was then hit with a bout of gout and was ruled out late, Harry then returned to the side. We took on Hallam, a side that I had never beaten in my time at Parkfield or Cranbourne and from memory it had been years since the former had got the job done.

They got off to an OK start at 2 for 67 but then we managed a consistent flow of wickets. I remember Foxy’s taking 2 rippers at bat pad and Milnesy’s running back with the flight to take a screamer off my bowling. Clean bowling Steve Chapman through the gate was also a highlight for me, I was able to deceive him with my flight and guile ! We proceed to bundle them out for 126! Then in no time we were 3 for 17 and up against it, I still remember the Hallam players yelling out “same old Parkfield, just can’t get the job done against us”!

What followed in my opinion was the beginning of our journey to premiership glory! Harry and Hubba then made the decision that we weren’t going to fall over and concede but dig in and bring the points home. They shared a 124 run partnership and the points (and respect) was ours!

They quality of batting when the chips were down was first class! Keeping in mind Harry had been dropped and was under all sorts of pressure when he strolled to the crease. I will never forget his off drive to bring up the hundred and how he saluted the crowd with a bow. We won by 70 runs and 6 wickets, a great statement against a competition powerhouse!

I think it was this game that made Harry realise he had a lot still to offer and was the catalyst for his improved performance and belief he could captain the club. After a lot of early success in his career, followed by many below par years it was this game that turned things around in my opinion. As we all know Harry went on to the captain the club (with his hard edge) and take us to premiership glory!

I will always remember this game and how happy I was for Harry! Oh and in case you missed it I took 7 for 41 off 26 overs!

Parkfield Funnies

Yarraman Oaks claimed its second victim this season with Strauchanie aka David Parlby, getting his car bogged while exiting the ground. He joins many other Parkfield players who have suffered the same fate, however I am sure Dave would be the first to get a new car stuck, only hours after buying it. I guess that’s one way to christen a new car.

However, that isn’t as embarrassing as a certain Parkfield quick bowler, who went to play a game of golf with his buds but turned up to the wrong golf course. The story behind apparent mix up was Payney had sent the following message to Pricey and Mick about golf.

“Just booked golf for Dad an myself at 10:15am tomorrow at Centenary Park. Let me know if you are keen and I will alter the booking to include you.”

Both replied immediately that they were keen. Pricey had said he would make his own way there and Payney was to pick up John & Mick.

On a beautiful morning for golf it got to about 10:10am the next morning and Payney, John & Mick were having a putt on the practice green at Centenary Park. Wondering where Pricey was Payney checked his phone and had a missed call from Pricey. When he rang him back he discovered that Pricey had also been having a putt on the practice green only he was at Churchill Park golf course instead.

Pricey had become worried that the others hadn’t arrived and it was close to tee off time so he checked the original message on his phone and then realised he was on the wrong course. It’s a long way from Churchill Park to Centenary Park Frankston so Pricey just packed up his clubs again and went home. Payney, John and Mick enjoyed the beautiful conditions and carried on with their round.

And Birdy’s reaction to this: “Was supposed to tee off at golf at 10:15 this morning but only browsed the text message & went to the wrong golf course. That'll teach me to pay more attention. Oh well, looks like a day on the couch watching tv & the Vietnamese drug dealers across the road do their part for Australian society. Domare!”

Parkfield Social Media

The Parkfield Press takes a look at what the Parkfield players and supporters have been saying online. Doesn’t matter if it’s Emails, Twitter, Facebook or Online Forums, the people from Parkfield are not short of a word.

Email

Here are some of the Emails that were sent around by Parkfield players on October 16th & 18th. Amazing what a statement ‘Round 1 games rescheduled’ or a little question like ‘When is our next committee meeting’ will lead to. I wonder how much work so of these guys got done on these days....

Fordy: You little beauty! No duck for me!

Spolly: But we all were there to see the shouldered arms ha ha

Dags: How’s your practice form Fordy?

Spolly: I think Fordy still thinks he is in???

Dags: I better find my spikes... I think they’re in a museum... ------Fordy: Better Not Interfere with Poker

Dags: True, winning every week deprives me of sleep ;-)

Fordy: It’s one all mate!

Dags: The cream rises to the top on the final table... Doesn’t it Couttsy?

Swiz: I’ll pay that. Why you’re responding to emails, where is Turf 4 playing this week Fordy?

Fordy: Don’t know mate, I guess I’ll find out Thursday when Steve tells me to bring the drinks

Dags: Swiz makes the decisions and the axe hasn’t swung yet... But it’s definitely being sharpened

Adam: Would you lot stop clogging up my emails...some people work... 30

Congratulations to Riley Payney for starting the year off in fine form. His team Blue Thunder (Jack, Jarryd, Marcus, Shaun, Riley, Spolly, Rahul, George, Andrew, Shane, Declan and Brandon) narrowly edged out the Lintonians by 1 point. Amazingly Darren went against most team’s philosophy of picking themselves which cost him a whopping 17.73 points after Darren’s 113 and 6 for against Mordialloc. Once again point scoring works like this:

BATSMEN

1 Run 0.1 points

BOWLER

Unassisted Wicket (Bowled & LBW) 2 points

Assisted Wicket (Catch & Stumping) 1 point

FIELDING / WICKET KEEPER

Catch 1 point Stumping 1 point

Unassisted Run Out 2 points Assisted Run Out 1 point

Parkfield Pirate News

SPOLLY (3/9/12) Hi all, We are still just sitting and waiting till all the illnesses pass in the mean time I am going to need to get another 50 off everyone for socks. pretty much it is a bit hard to expect the trainer to b paying all his bills when he ain't hit the track and for all we know is still suffering from what he had when I took the dog to him. Pirate falls under a different set up because he has raced but because he is not right I will b pushing him to have more blood tests on him before he races again which we will pay. for socks I am going to give him a couple of hundred for up keep over the last couple of months plus vet bills coming up we will need to have a little cash left for that. Also for what ever medication he may need to get right. It is a just one of those things that can't b helped and as a newby (newbie) learn as we go. Winter is **** is what I have learnt.

SPOLLY (17/9/12) Socks it was decided to not trial today because he would of been stuck in the float for 7 hrs so will trial tomo afternoon. Pirate going good but I would say don't have too much on him because he is 1st up after an injury and illness. At his best it's worth a shot but he will need luck from the 6 box the speed map has him 4th. It is a decent field of runners which is unlucky. a dog has run 2nd at the meadows another a 2nd at geelong.

SPOLLY (18/9/12) Socks went slow again today beaten 4 lengths in 18.50. Geez if only I could tell him how close the green needle is he might go quicker ha. We will need the vet to look him over again I think he will b there Friday. he was looking great coming out the trailer pulling hard and looked keen but as we know he did go a half second faster months ago which would mean he is injuries somewhere. i will speak with trainer about what we should do. Pirates run tomo we are hoping for him to b competitive. very hard to say he will win with has happened over the last few months everything humanly has been done to get him right as I have over seen everything. vets checks say he is good physically good he looks happy he was 2 tenth of his best time recorded. the biggest reason why I would say don put much on him tomo is the trainer had 3 dogs run Monday and 2 of them were poor and the other looked ok so David don't have a dumb bet again haha. Fingers crossed for tomo boys 50

BAPPO (26/9/12) Lucky you can play cricket! As your Grammar is ****! Isabella can type a better letter. example A ) "Sock will trial tomorrow morning and hope he get better the vet said he was ok so I expect a improvement sry hope for ha." GENIUS!

FORDY (8/10/12) So the most important thing is our dumb mutt. Seemed to pull up well after the run so hopefully he is fully fit with no niggles. The few runs in a row would have done him well. With a bit of rain around might help him concidering (considering) that our trainers place is a bog heap so he could be use to running on wet ground. (could be stretching it trying to find good things to say) but the last run was positive as most of you would agree, and he did run his best time around Bendigo, quicker than both runs he ran the two 2nds. So let’s hope he can improve more again. It’s the first time out of the pink box, so I’m questioning weather (whether) he will run around the field or he will try to go straight to the rail and cause trouble. Well I think he will run a place but hopefully he can do it for us, but like I said before looks a tough race for a win.

Our trainer had 6 runners today but has scratched 2 of them. I know Spolly will be backing Free Earl in race 5 no. 4 but think it might be a tough race for him too. There seems be a virus going around a few different trainers yards, so fingers crossed this doesn't spread too much or looks like socks could get it, as he seems to be getting everything else. This dog could catch small pox.

SPOLLY (8/10/12) Ah Spolly got burnt there this greyhound game will send me broke.

FORDY (8/10/12) Yeah, Spolly you talked me into $50 ew rather than $25.

BAPPO (8/10/12) SO what was the result ?????? what time was the race i missed it again. Can someone tell us what time the lil dog runs instead of just what race? Take it I didn’t miss much cos the banter sounds like losers banter???

SPOLLY (22/10/12) We r in at Geelong thurs at about 430. With a little luck we can do it. the 8 looks hardest to beat. even tho our stable mate beat us last trial I am sure we can turn the tables over the longer journey. 51
