Of all of San Francisco’s diverse signature neighborhoods, Nob Hill might be its richest and most refined. Its panoramic views and centralized location made it the premier place to erect mansions as the affluent flocked to the city in the late 19th century.
After the earthquake and fire of 1906, many of these mansions were replace and hotels built in their place. Now, situated at the intersection of California and Powell streets are the lavish hotels renowned as the “Big Four” named after the railroad tycoons who built the Central Pacific Railroad: the Stanford Court, Intercontinen- tal Mark Hopkins, the Huntington, and the Fairmont.
Opposite the Fairmont Hotel and Pacific Union Club is Grace Cathedral, one of the city’s largest houses of worship. The stately Masonic Temple is also located across from the church.
Though Nob Hill is a very densely built neighborhood, there are parks at which residents and visitors can relax and enjoy the outdoors. The most prominent park in the neighborhood is Hun- tington Park, which takes up an entire block, bounded by Sacra- mento Street to the north, Taylor Street to the west, California Street to the south, and Cushman Street to the east.
