He is also well placed to comment on the risks of preemptive invasion for existing alliances and the future prospects for the international rule of law. An analysis of the ways in which the international community has “confronted evil,” Shawcross’ brief polemic argues that U.S. President George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair were right to go to war without UN clearance, and that the hypocrisy of Jacques Chirac was largely responsible for the collapse of international consensus over the war. His curious identification with Bush and his neoconservative allies as the most qualified to implement this humanitarian agenda, however, fails to recognize essential differences between the leftist case for war and the hard-line justification for regime change in Iraq. Hegemony and Resistance among College Women Anticipating Careers A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Communication November 2015 by Hannah Bush B.S., Bradley University, 2013 HEGEMONY AND RESISTANCE AMONG COLLEGE WOMEN Abstract This study focuses on how college women, of different intersecting identities, perceive and subsequently manage career opportunities and barriers for women. By analyzing interview and survey responses about women’s perceptions of job market and future workplace interactions, the researcher finds participants both able to acknowledge that there is gender inequality, while also restraining themselves to career paths numerically dominated by women. The study finds that women reinforce and resist hegemonic discourses of patriarchy and meritocracy. As of November, the market share for Korean films in the domestic market stood at 55 percent, which indicates that the yearly market share of Korean films will be over 50 percent for the third year in a row. In the international arena as well, Korean films were invited to major international film festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno, and San Sebastian and received a warm reception from critics and audiences. It is often said that the current prosperity of Korean cinema is due to the strong commitment and policies introduced by the KIM Dae-joong government in 1999 to promote Korean films. -

Celebrity Cinema and Hallyu 2.0 Ng Shu Min Chrystal, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Liew Kai Khiun, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore The Asian Conference on Media & Mass Communication 2015 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Through their realist cinematic portrayals of the traumatic evolution of Korean socio- political landscapes, Korean directors such as Im Kwon-Taek are synonymous with Korean national Cinema. These directors have raised the country’s cultural profile internationally through the film festival circuit. However, with the phenomenal global reach of the “Korean Wave” or Hallyu, film is no longer a singular projection of the image of South Korea. Today, television dramas have overtaken films, flooding television and small mobile screens with attractive faces of Korean celebrities. While several studies have made references to key Korean celebrities, namely Lee Young Ae, Rain and Gianna Jun, there have been fewer efforts to trace these celebrities’ trajectories within films and other platforms. This paper will explore how cinema within the Korean Wave phenomenon contributes to the ecology of the Korean Wave and the roles these celebrities play within this eco system.
