CoP16 Prop. 17 Deletion of Imperial Pheasant Lophura imperialis from Appendix I Proponent: Switzerland, as Depositary Government, at the request of the Animals Committee (prepared by France) Summary: The Imperial Pheasant Lophura imperialis is a rare dark-blue pheasant known in the wild from just four records from Viet Nam. First described in 1924 from a single live pair, it is now accepted as being an occasional naturally-occurring hybrid between Silver Pheasant L. nycthemera and Edward’s Pheasant L. edwardsi. A bird captured in 1990 was likely a hybrid between L. nycthemera and Vietnamese Pheasant L. hatinhensis which itself has been found to be an inbred form of L. edwardsi. There have been no other confirmed reports of Imperial Pheasant in the wild. A captive stock was established in Europe and the USA from a pair caught in 1923, which were subsequently cross-bred with Lophura nycthemera to create new stock. Birds with Imperial Pheasant phenotype have also been created in captivity by hybridizing Silver Pheasant and Edward’s Pheasant. Lophura imperialis and L. edwardsi were both listed in CITES Appendix I in 1975. Since 1975 international trade in 31 L. imperialis individuals has been reported in the CITES trade database, all but four declared as captive-bred. These four comprise animals exported before 1999 from non-range States with no source code included in the record. There is no reason to suppose that these were not also captive-bred. Lophura imperialis is proposed for removal from Appendix I on the basis that it is no longer recognised as a species. -

Abstract The Galliformes of Pipar have been surveyed seven times between 1979 and 1998. The nearby area of Santel was surveyed using comparable methods in 2001. In continuance of the long- term monitoring at Pipar and to provide a second count at Santel, dawn call counts were conducted in both areas, using the same survey points as previous surveys, between 29 th April and 9 th May 2005. The aim of those surveys was to collect information on the status of pheasants and partridges and to look for any changes over time. In both areas, galliform numbers were higher in 2005 than in previous surveys, for most species. For each species there was no evidence of decline since the first counts were conducted nearly 30 years ago. Both areas provide good habitat for Galliformes and disturbance is not a serious issue. -

To breed animals in captivity and release them in their natural control habitats is one of the conservation methods. Amongst other species partridges also breed in captivity and can be release in the wild but presently data lacking, need to examine. Chukar partridge, Black francolin and Grey francolin are used for sports hunting in Pakistan. The available record on captive breeding of Chukar partridge, Black francolin and Grey francilin and their release in the wild for the years 2015-2020 was reviewed using a developed questionnaire. Methodology: Review record of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department Pakistan through a developed questionnaire Findings: It was found that the maximum number of chukar partridge breed was 36, Black francolin (6) and Grey francolin (24). Out of the breeding stock, Chukar partridges (44) and Grey francolin (28) were released in the wild to its natural habitat by hard release technique. -

Galliform Baraminology 4 Abstract This study investigates the number of galliform bird holobaramins. Criteria used to determine the members of any given holobaramin included a biblical word analysis, statistical baraminology, and hybridization. The biblical search yielded limited biosystematic information; however, since it is a necessary and useful part of baraminology research it is both included and discussed. -

All photos in this report were taken by Sam Woods. 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-0514 [email protected] Page Tropical Birding Trip Report Sri Lanka: January 2015 INTRODUCTION In many ways Sri Lanka covers it all; for the serious birder, even those with experience from elsewhere in the Indian subcontinent, it offers up a healthy batch of at least 32 endemic bird species (this list continues to grow, though, so could increase further yet); for those without any previous experience of the subcontinent it offers these but, being an island of limited diversity, not the overwhelming numbers of birds, which can be intimidating for the first timer; and for those with a natural history slant that extends beyond the avian, there is plentiful other wildlife besides, to keep all happy, such as endemic monkeys, strange reptiles only found on this teardrop-shaped island, and a bounty of butterflies, which feature day-in, day-out. It should also be made clear that while it appears like a chunk of India which has dropped of the main subcontinent, to frame it, as merely an extension of India, would be a grave injustice, as Sri Lanka feels, looks, and even tastes very different. There are some cultural quirks that make India itself, sometimes challenging to visit for the westerner. -

Heru Cahyono: [email protected] ABSTRACT Chestnut-bellied Hill-Partridge (Arborophila javanica) is an endemic species of Java, and also one of four endemic partridge species in the Greater Sunda islands. This species is constituted by three subspecies which differ in the color pattern of their head. The first reported sighting of Chestnut-bellied Hill-Partridge (Arborophila javanica lawuana) in Cangar is by Nijman in 2003, and for these past ten years the observation data has been inadequately obtained by local birdwatchers although its call is remarkable ; the call might be frequently heard by birdwatchers but got missed. Several information about this bird has been collected, including its sound recording that we used during observations. Observations were conducted around Cangar tourism object, particularly along the main road linking Pacet (Mojokerto) and Batu (Malang). The observations resulted in the data on its behavior and the best observation spot, that is in Lemahbang. HYBRIDIZATION & ZOOGEOGRAPHIC PATTERNS IN PHEASANTS PAUL A. JOHNSGARD The purpose of this paper is to infonn members of the W.P.A. of an unusual scientific use of the extent and significance of hybridization among pheasants (tribe Phasianini in the proposed classification of Johnsgard~ 1973). This has occasionally occurred naturally, as for example between such locally sympatric species pairs as the kalij (Lophura leucol11elana) and the silver pheasant (L. nycthelnera), but usually occurs "'accidentally" in captive birds, especially in the absence of conspecific mates. Rarely has it been specifically planned for scientific purposes, such as for obtaining genetic, morphological, or biochemical information on hybrid haemoglobins (Brush. 1967), trans ferins (Crozier, 1967), or immunoelectrophoretic comparisons of blood sera (Sato, Ishi and HiraI, 1967). The literature has been summarized by Gray (1958), Delacour (1977), and Rutgers and Norris (1970). Some of these alleged hybrids, especially those not involving other Galliformes, were inadequately doculnented, and in a few cases such as a supposed hybrid between domestic fowl (Gallus gal/us) and the lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) can be discounted. -
The Behaviour of the Mollucan Megapode, Eulipoa Wallacei Caves:Megapodidae) in Nesting Grounds
THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MOLLUCAN MEGAPODE, EULIPOA WALLACEI CAVES:MEGAPODIDAE) IN NESTING GROUNDS by C.J. HEIJ ABSTRACT- The moluccan -megapode, Eulipoa wallacei is the only hole digging megapode in the island of Haruku. The birds lay eggs in a communal nesting ground exposed to the heat of the sun. The eggs collected between 1987 and 1995 showed an increase in number. The factors influencing the increase in number were not fully known, but it seems the social economic activities of the local peoples influenced the intensity of searching the eggs. There were also differences in number of eggs collected in wet and dry season. The birds lay eggs at the depth of 60-90 CIII in soil, the average eggs length 78.1 mm, average width 48.9 mm. The average soil temperature 27' - 35°C. The eggs in the incubation boxes resulted in 92.7% hatchlings, average incubation time 74.2 days, and the hatchlings found on the soil surface have an average weight of 57 gr. The behaviour of the bird in detail is indicated. INTRODUCTION Jacobs (1974) wrote that on January 4th, 1576, the priest Nicolau Nunes was wondering about the behaviour of the hatchlings of about a bush hen which digs a hole in the ground and laid an egg in it and filled it up, and remarked that the eggs as well as the birds were very tasty. In 1860, Gray made a description of the Megapode collected by Wallace in 1858 on the island of Halmahera, later named as Eulipoa wallacei, but the sex of the holotype was not mentional.
