October 2016 Dear Friends and Members of Green Street, I am excited to be writing my first greeting to you as your settled pastor! If you’re reading The Evangel and we haven’t met, I hope we can fix that. Drop by on Sunday and join us for worship, now at 11am and in the sanctuary after a summer in the Starr Parlor. If that doesn’t work for you, keep in mind that I will be keeping office hours Tuesday-Thursday from 9am-1pm, and on Saturday from 2pm –5pm. This is a slight change, but my hope is that folks who cannot make it on weekday mornings will be able to drop by on Saturdays. This October is mission month, and we will be participating in the World Mission Offering. This year’s theme is “Celebrate New Life in Christ: ‘on Earth as in Heaven’”, and our church’s engagement will support the spiritual awakening taking place in Cuba through the work of the Eastern Cuba Baptist Convention. Come join us on Sunday for more information about how we as a congregation can help, and you as an individual might become involved with the work of the Eastern Cuba Baptist Convention and International Ministries. In addition, a group of us will be attending Mission Works on Saturday, October 15th. If that’s something that interests you, there is further information in the narthex. In addition, the first Sunday of October is World Communion Sunday! This is an exciting moment of unity for Christians globally, since a great many of us will all be celebrating the Lord’s Supper on the same day. While we all have different theologies around what the Lord’s Supper means (, consubstantiation, ), what it’s called (Communion, , Lord’s Supper), and how often it is done (every day, every Sunday, monthly, quarterly), the remembrance of ’ life, death, and resurrection through this practice is one of the things that almost all Christians have in common with one another. October is also a busy month for events. Please join us for an exciting Tailgate Party on October 16th, where we will cheer on Tom Brady and the Patriots. Please bring seating and tailgate snacks – there’s a signup in the narthex. In addition, on October 12th, at 6:30pm, we will begin our weekly Wednesday night Bible study. This will be conversation-based, and for the first few weeks, we will choose differ- ent texts from different parts of the Bible. In November, we might consider working our way through a book of the Bible, if folks want to do that. Afterwards, there will be a prayer meeting. Don’t forget that the annual Holiday Auction is quickly approaching! There’s a sign-up sheet in the narthex. Also, my installation as your settled pastor will be November 6th! It’s been an exciting couple of weeks at Green Street, and I look forward to many more. Thank you so much for your warmth and hospitality as I begin my ministry with you!

Blessings and Peace, Rev. Michael Woolf

HOLIDAY AUCTION PUSH IS ON The Holiday Auction is on Saturday, November 19th! This is our big fundraiser and we are excited for this fun event. For now, the emphasis is on building the list of auc- tion items. Where do the auction items come from, you ask? From you, the church family! They include donated items, services, social events, gift certificates, and any- thing else that might be auctioned off. A sign-up sheet is available in the narthex – awaiting your input. Thank you!

A note from Rev. George Sinclair, Jr What a wonderful send off! I was much blessed by your many kind words and by the gift of a block to place in the walk at the Ocean Park Library. Ocean Park has been a significant part of my life since I was 12 years old. Ministry has been my calling and to have what will most likely be my last interim yoked with my love for Ocean Park, and all it means to me and to our family, was a humbling experience and a wonderful joy. Thank you for bringing those two parts of my life together with the donation of a brick with my name on it. Blessings to all as you continue to minster and grow with your new pastor, Michael.

Church Picnic 2016 What a fun afternoon we had at the Elks Lodge in Saugus! Descent weather, fun games, a great cookout and warm fellowship...a wonderful way to kick off Rev. Michael’s ministry! World Mission Offering —October!!

Celebrate New Life in Christ “on Earth as in Heaven” (Matthew 6:10, NABRE)

A great and surprising spiritual awakening is happening in Baptist churches in Cuba right now!

Since 1990, the number of churches in Cuba has grown by 450%. The number of baptisms has risen by over 500%. And the number of prayer groups and total church memberships have climbed in equally high numbers.

After decades of harsh restrictions, “the church of God has risen from the ashes,” says a retired Cuban church leader who witnessed the remarkable change firsthand. “In God’s time, the hearts of so many people have been opened up to the goodness of the gospel.”

The good news is that our church’s support of the World Mission Offering (WMO) is helping to fuel the growth of the Eastern Cuba Baptist Convention through financial and global worker support and through International Ministries (IM)-sponsored pastor conferences.

The better news is that there is a lot that we can learn from Cuba’s spiritual revival. For example:

Youth ministry is thriving through camping and sports ministries, concerts and youth rallies in the streets of Cuba’s cities and towns.

Spirit-filled outreach is yielding abundant fruit through evangelistic campaigns, undergirded with fervent prayer and fasting.

Discipleship is spreading through numerous house churches and cell groups of prayer.

A new generation of leaders is growing through faithful teaching at seminaries and lay training centers. (continued on next page) Responding to God’s Call Worldwide

And perhaps the best news of all is that Cuba’s spiritual awakening is but one of many thriving ministries run by IM partners and more than 1,800 long- and short-term global workers in more than 70 countries around the world.

IM’s vision is “on earth as in heaven,” which reminds us of God’s invitation to participate in his work in the world.

And that’s just what IM is doing—through your support of the WMO—by praying, equipping, serving, proclaiming, teaching, inviting, healing and encouraging in the name of Jesus.

Your gifts to the WMO help to raise up, place and send new global servants and volunteers to reach and touch lives for Jesus around the world. They also help to fill gaps for those workers who haven’t yet reached their support goals, enabling crucial ministries to continue.

Your gifts help support IM’s more than 240 global partners who are actively sharing God’s message of hope, love and healing with a lost and hurting world.

Your gifts help recruit and train new global workers, open up new global mission fields, respond to global disasters with relief and development funds through One Great Hour of Sharing and much more.

The 2016 World Mission Offering will be received during each Sunday in October.

PLEASE HELP! Baptists in Cuba and the Dominican Republic have requested our help with scholarships and supplies for youth camps and gatherings. With an overall 10% increase in undesignated gifts to the World Mission Offering (WMO), we can respond to that call. Our congregation’s 2016 WMO goal is $1587.00 which is 10% above our 2015 WMO giving. Whether God is calling you to GO as a short- or long-term global servant or to GIVE financial support, let us join together to touch as many lives as possible in more than 70 countries around the globe.

Give generously and expectantly to the WMO as, together, we help people everywhere come to Christ, grow in their relationships with God and change their worlds through the power of the Holy Spirit.
