It is assigned to the family Eulimidae relying on shell characters, and com- pared to species of several genera which share some morphological features with it. It is de- scribed as new and provisionally included in Chileutomia Tate et Cossmann, 1898, although with reservation, as we refrain to establish a new genus without anatomical and molecular data which can clarify the phylogenetic relationships of the new species. BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 25(2): 186-204,1975 ECOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE RECENT ARTICULATE BRACHIOPOD ARGYROTHECA BERMUDANA DALL FROM THE BERMUDA PLATFORM Alan Logan ABSTRACT The occurrence and life habits of Ihe diminutive articulate brachiopod Argyro/Izeca bermu- dalla have been investigated along a general NW-SE traverse across the Bermuda Platform, in- corporating all seven biotopes recognized by Upchurch (1970). Sediment samples indicate that brachiopod tests comprise a consistent though minor « 1%) fraction in reefal shoal sediments, but are totally absent from lagoonal sediments. Preliminary transects reveal that in the reef-front terrace, north reef and central and south reef biotopes, A. bermudalla is cryptic in habit, occurring on the undersides of the foliaceous hermatypic corals MOil/as/rea cavernosa (L.), M. annularis (Ellis and Solander), and Agaricia fragilis Dana. The main host coral for brachiopods on the south shore reefs and associated reef-front terrace is M. cavemosa, on the north reef-front terrace, north and central reefs it is M. anllularis, while A. fragilis is more important on the lagoonal and near-shore reefs. Brachiopod densities generally decrease shorewards from the edge of the Platform. The distribution and density of brachiopods appears to be controlled primarily by the relative abundance of the host corals and their growth form, although other limiting factors may be at work. Clumped distributions are common, probably the result of brooded larvae and in- tense competition for living space. Inter-island areas such as Castle Harbor and Harrington Sound are virtually devoid of brachiopods, although a relict population exists marginally in an unusual sub-boulder habitat in land-locked Walsingham Pond. -

A blind abyssal Corambidae (Mollusca, Nudibranchia) SARSIA from the Norwegian Sea, with a reevaluation of the systematics of the family. – Sarsia 83:15-20. Bergen. ISSN 0036-4827. Echinocorambe brattegardi gen. et sp. nov. is described based on five eyeless specimens collected between 2538 and 3016 m depth in the Norwegian Sea. This new monotypic genus differs from other confamilial taxa in having the dorsum covered with long papillae and a radula formula n.3.1.3.n. The posterior notch in the notum and gill morphology, which have traditionally been used as generic characters in the family Corambidae, are considered to have little or no taxonomical value above species level. Instead of the currently described 11 nominal genera, we recognize as valid only Corambe and Loy, to which is now added Echinocorambe. Loy differs from Corambe in the asym- metrical lobes of the posterior notal notch and the presence of spicules in the notum. All other nominal genera are objective or subjective synonyms of these two. For details the research samples were concerning pro- gramme, the institutes involved, the methods used, equipment and the exact localities of the sampling stations, we refer to Van der Land (1987). The sampling methods used during the field work (mainly by Van Veen grab) were not very appropriate to collect live rissoid snails. Of over ten thousand rissoid specimens, collected from 400 sediment samples, not more than 10 were captured as living animals. Sanchiz (*) RESUMEN Durante el periodo 1978-1994 se han descrito cerca de 2.000 especies animales nue- vas para la ciencia en territorio ibérico-balear. Se presenta como apéndice un listado completo de las especies (1978-1993), ordenadas taxonómicamente, así como de sus referencias bibliográficas. Como tendencias generales en este proceso de inventario de la biodiversidad se aprecia un incremento moderado y sostenido en el número de taxones descritos, junto a una cada vez mayor contribución de los autores españoles. Es cada vez mayor el número de especies publicadas en revistas que aparecen en el Science Citation Index, así como el uso del idioma inglés. La mayoría de los phyla, clases u órdenes mues- tran gran variación en la cantidad de especies descritas cada año, dado el pequeño núme- ro absoluto de publicaciones. Los insectos son claramente el colectivo más estudiado, pero se aprecia una disminución en su importancia relativa, asociada al incremento de estudios en grupos poco conocidos como los nematodos. Healy School of Biological Sciences (Zoology, A08), University of Sydney; 2006, New South Wales, Australia ABSTRACT: Ultrastructural observations on spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of selected pyramidellid gastropods (species of Turbonilla, ~gulina, Cingufina and Hinemoa) are presented. During spermatid development, the condensing nucleus becomes initially anterio-posteriorly com- pressed or sometimes cup-shaped. Concurrently, the acrosomal complex attaches to an electron- dense layer at the presumptive anterior pole of the nucleus, while at the opposite (posterior) pole of the nucleus a shallow invagination is formed to accommodate the centriolar derivative. Midpiece formation begins soon after these events have taken place, and involves the following processes: (1) the wrapping of individual mitochondria around the axoneme/coarse fibre complex; (2) later internal metamorphosis resulting in replacement of cristae by paracrystalline layers which envelope the matrix material; and (3) formation of a glycogen-filled helix within the mitochondrial derivative (via a secondary wrapping of mitochondria). Advanced stages of nuclear condensation {elongation, transformation of fibres into lamellae, subsequent compaction) and midpiece formation proceed within a microtubular sheath ('manchette'). Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject. -

Afonso3, and Rafael Zardoya1 1Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC), Departamento de Biodiversidad y Biologia Evolutiva 2Universidad de Cadiz, Departamento CMIM y Química Inorgánica – Instituto de Biomoléculas (INBIO) 3Universidade do Algarve, Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) Cone snails form one of the most diverse families of marine animals, including more than 900 species classified into almost ninety different (sub)genera. Conids are well known for being active predators on worms, fishes, and even other snails. Cones are venomous gastropods, meaning that they use a sophisticated cocktail of hundreds of toxins, named conotoxins, to subdue their prey. Although this venom has been studied for decades, most of the effort has been focused on Indo-Pacific species. Thus far, Atlantic species have received little attention despite recent radiations have led to a hotspot of diversity in West Africa, with high levels of endemic species. In fact, the Atlantic Chelyconus ermineus is thought to represent an adaptation to piscivory independent from the Indo-Pacific species and is, therefore, key to understanding the basis of this diet specialization. We studied the transcriptomes of the venom gland of three individuals of C. ermineus. The venom repertoire of this species included more than 300 conotoxin precursors, which could be ascribed to 33 known and 22 new (unassigned) protein superfamilies, respectively. Most abundant superfamilies were T, W, O1, M, O2, and Z, accounting for 57% of all detected diversity.
