DEVINCI CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY Cycles Devinci is celebrating its 30th anniversary, having gone from humble beginnings to worldwide fame as an innovative quality manufacturer, world- class team sponsor, Bixi bike producer and much more. We caught up with Devinci president, Félix Gauthier, for his perspective on the highlights and changes in the company’s 30-year journey of success, along with today’s cycling scene and what lies ahead. by Richard Whelan
14 BIKE TRADE CANADA WINTER 2017-18 www.pedalmag.com Congratulations on your 30th! Tell us what was it like back in 1987. Devinci crew at Interbike (l-r) Francis Morin, David Régnier-Bourque, Félix Gauthier, Félix Gauthier: Thanks. Devinci was founded in 1987, but I got seriously Maxime Lamirande, Manuel Des Hayes involved in the company in 1990. Following a severe bike crash, I discovered that my next bike could be made out of aluminum right in my hometown. As soon as I discovered this, I visited the bike shop – it was a very small shop the size of a garage – and I’ve barely left since then. I bought it and changed the name to Devinci in 1990. My idea has always been the same since the beginning – to offer a quality product. When we were kids, we gave my mother a bike. On her very first ride she broke her ankle as the brakes didn’t work correctly. My challenge as the boss was to balance administration, production and sales. We needed all three to grow and, therefore, a good team to achieve this goal. I have always tried to find key employees, “to surround myself with the best,” and then keep them happy. I am lucky to say most of our main managers have been around for a long time. There is even one employee who got his first paycheque before I did! And he’s still here in the R&D department. Aluminum bikes were in their infancy back then, and we had a lot to learn. It’s only after putting many bikes on the market that we found out that a heat It’s always been important for Devinci to support treatment was required – welding affects the aluminum’s solidity and creates young athletes like current pros Antoine weak points. But the cost of such an oven was just too pricey. Luckily, we were Duchesne and Leandre Bouchard. able to count on CQRDA [Québec’s aluminum R&D centre] for help, support and advice, and we literally built our first oven. Once we got to know the heat treatment process – and we knew bikes wouldn’t be coming back to the shop for replacement – we started looking to the future. That was certainly our main headache at the beginning. One interesting point is that Devinci had two divisions: one creating Devin- ci bicycles and the other as a supplier to other companies like Argon 18, Cer- velo and Evil. They were working with us at the very beginning as clients, and we were their manufacturer. This helped us survive through the different equipment changes while the Devinci brand was slowly making its way into the market.
What has changed the most for Devinci over the past 30 years? FG: The factory. The equipment we have for manufacturing bikes is really high-end. The opportunity was open to industrial designers who had to work with a manufacturer. So we chose to work with Michel Dallaire, the designer of Montréal’s Olympic torch among other things, and we won the contract. But then, we started all over again before production. We wanted to push the limits, to see how we could build the best bike while making the first “market version” as late as possible. So we created another “instrumented” bike, but this time a city bike. We had a rider with a computer in a backpack – this was before 2007, so comput- ers back then were heavier and bigger than they are today. That way, we could track and measure the different loads the bike would have to handle. We put it through its paces – down stairs, up curbs, over holes, you name it! The rider had no pity for the bike! And that gave us precise, specific info. We could then create the perfect bike based on real-life situations. I had a fairly good idea of the potential such a project had. We all know bikes will eventually play an important role in urban transport, for both traffic issues and the environment. What’s more, producing bikes for public bike-sharing services gave us the opportunity to invest in our equipment – which is good for our brand name and our in-house know-how. It’s more than usual since we have a big delivery of FIT bikes for Brazil – more than 7,000 bikes on the way just for the city of Recife! We even need more staff – but it’s not that easy to find people. Usually on a yearly basis, we employ 70 to 75 people. We’re based in an industrial park, in a factory of about 40,000 sq. ft. But despite its hum- ble beginnings on “deli alley”, the shop has established itself as the pre-eminent location for two-wheeled pursuits in the city and has expanded upon its custom frames and moun- tain biking roots to embrace everything from road and cyclocross to urban and e-bikes. In 1989, Moulden Bicycles Works was start- ed by Jim Moulden offering hand-built frames and hard-to-find specialty mountain bike parts. The first shop was actually located near bustling Whyte Avenue. But its next venue had a small retail shop and a larger frame shop around the corner. The previous occupant was a smoked sausage factory serving a local deli. Two years later, the bike works opened a second retail shop directly on Whyte and, in 1992, expanded to a two-storey building a block away with “a ton of character and brick construction”, where it has been ever since. “I still remember the smell of smoked sau- sages as it had soaked into every square inch of the building – it was pretty rough but suited our image,” says Rumsey, also the shop’s first employee. “I’m pretty sure we made sure we all had our tetanus shots, but who knows... what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?” In the early days, mountain biking was new to Edmonton, and the first shop carried lines such as Breezer, Bridgestone, Kona and Concorde, in addition to continuing to build frames under the Moulden brand. Rumsey remembers bombing the gravel pathways around town, embracing the new sport with suitable gusto. “When we got into mountain biking we pretty much rode them like our road bikes: at max speed on wide trails,” he explains. “So, not what we’d call mountain biking today, more like gravel riding. Back in the day we would ride the Friday Night Loop in what was effectively a paceline on the multi-use trails flat-out. It’s no wonder mountain bikes got banned from our trails as we tore by walkers at high speed.” Then came the boom in the early ’90s, and Edmonton was in the middle of mountain biking fever. Hardcore rode that wave to sig- nificant growth. In 1996, Rumsey took ownership of the re- tail side of the business, and in 2003 Moulden retired.
