PRIVATE COLLECTION May Markus Lüpertz Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. May 24–September 10; May 27–September 20 German Neo-Expressionist painter, sculptor, writer, teacher, and jazz pianist Markus Lüpertz is the subject of these two simultaneous exhibitions. The 75-year-old flamboyant, tattoo-emblazoned artist’s intense painterly output appears in the Hirshhorn show, curated by Evelyn Hankins, which concentrates on Lüpertz’s formative years, from 1962 to 1975, when he reflected the turmoil of postwar Germany with a series of semi-figurative military paintings. -

ABSTRACT Sunshower A Symphonic Poem for Wind Ensemble Jordan R. Tucker, M.M. Mentor: Scott McAllister, D.M.A. Composed in the programmatic spirit of standard wind ensemble works such as H. Owen Reed’s La Fiesta Mexicana, Winds of Nagual by Michael Colgrass, and Alfred Reed’s Armenian Dances, Sunshower is an exploration in sonoristic composition and a tribute to the classic wind ensemble. Utilizing a large ensemble, this four-movement symphonic poem was begun in June of 2016 and was completed in February of 2017. With the intention of creating the aural and sensational atmosphere of a sun-shower, my ultimate goal was to share a work that is both programmatic in its connection to the listeners, and depicts a unique, modern, and human experience. By establishing an aural connection between the wind ensemble and this fascinating weather pattern, the music is able to unify audience members in an acoustic environment, allow them to embrace new sensations of expression, and demonstrate the textural possibilities within the world of wind ensemble composition. Carefully Pieced Together Around Feist
FEIST ‘Let It Die’ is very much a voice album in close up, “eye to eye and ear to ear”. Carefully pieced together around Feist’s seductive and jhai* voice, the album forms the missing link between ye old folk (storytelling), the Brill building era (the quest for the hook), doo-wop (melody and mood) and minimal modern pop arrangements. Like line drawings as opposed to detailed paintings, these songs leave you space to fill in the emotional blanks. Its lack of complication makes ‘Let It Die’ standout from much of today’s musical offerings; put simply, a beautiful slice of sonic escapism to illustrate and interrupt the little moments that together tell us stories. A history not lacking in variety, the Canadian born singer has accomplished much in her few tender years, so for those inquisitive journo types, here are the last few years in a nut shell… “My first proper gig was supporting the Ramones at an outdoor festival when my high school punk band won a battle of the bands contest. We played together for about 5 years. I moved to Toronto from Calgary to see a musical injuries doctor, after losing my voice on my first cross-Canadian tour when I was 19. Not knowing a soul in Toronto I spent 6 months in a dark basement apartment with a 4 track and having been told not to sing I got a guitar to do it for me. A couple of years later I was playing guitar in By Divine Right and toured for 6 months opening for the Tragically Hip, mostly in front of stadium crowds of around 40,000. -

Annex A: Bios of Creative Directors - Clara Yee and Randy Chan Clara Yee Creative Director Singapore: Inside Out Tokyo Clara Yee is the creative director of nomadic creative house, in the wild. After graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design London, Yee has been actively developing her creative practice, creating and collaborating across disciplines from fashion to spatial interventions. To date, Yee has worked with many prolific private and public clients, including Alexander McQueen, Barbican London and Warner Music. Her work has brought her on cross-country cultural adventures to Beijing, London, Mexico City, New York, Taiwan and Japan, where she collaborated with international talents. She has exhibited her works as part of London Design Festival, Taiwan Design Expo, Singapore Design Week and Archifest, showing at galleries in London, Singapore and USA such as Blackall Studios, Sculpture Square, Berkeley Foundation and Singapore Art Museum’s 8Q @ SAM. Micromusique et ludismes régressifs depuis 2000 by Jacques Amblard and Emmanuel Aymès is a slim volume at 124 pages, but nevertheless a fascinating exploration of a contemporary musical phenomenon. Setting out from the concept of “le redevenir-enfant,” a phrase with more than a hint of the Deleuzian about it (though the philosopher is not mentioned in the text), the book examines a tendency towards infantilisation which the authors trace to the 1830s but which has become much more evident in more recent times with the sociological identification of the “adulescent” in the 1970s and 1980s, certain developments in the plastic arts from the late 1980s, in certain strains of popular music that arose with the availability of personal computers in the late 1980s and 1990s, and finally in aspects of Western art music [“musique savante”] from the new millennium. What Amblard and Aymès term micromusic is also known as chiptune or 8-bits, the post-punk music of geeks and hackers with whom game technologies such as Game Boy are transformed into sources and instruments for music-making. While this, for the authors, is ostensibly regressive and nothing less than the “acme” of infantilisation, it signals at the same time, as the back cover notes, the “subtile inversion” of the player-musician into an anti-consumer within processes of alternative globalisation. -

As a case-study related to our own practice we give an in-depth look into the International Headphone Festival Le Placard (1998-2013), a series of ephemeral (headphones only) concert-sites and laboratories for (not only) sound art and electronic music, that was highly innovative and influential also in the worlds of academic and commercial music, though —being the result of collective creative efforts, transmitted in (contemporary equivalents of) the fundamentally aural tradition that is typical of artistic folk modes— this is an influence destined to remain anonymous, hence un- credited.
