Exploring Innovative Methods and Approaches: Task-Based Teaching & Learning Years of Empowering Webinar: Duration 3 Hours 37 Teachers Exploring innovative methods and approaches: Task-based Teaching & Learning The long history of teaching methods and approaches, primarily concerned with finding more effective methods of language teaching, has recently witnessed a TARGET AUDIENCE: shift from a preoccupation with ‘methods’ to “a more complex view of language All Teachers, Coordinators, Principals and Heads teaching which encompasses a multi-faceted understanding of the teaching and learning processes: a “focus on pedagogy”. Originally, methods were considered ‘top-down impositions’ of experts’ views of teaching and the role of the individual teacher was minimized. Now, things have changed and teachers’ function seems to be valued more than in the past. Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is closely connected to communicative language teaching, it focuses on learners’ Facilitator: Lucilla Lopriore needs and on making learners interact through authentic tasks in the target language. It is also in contact with Punjabi and English. The present study explores the views and attitudes of the Pahari speaking community regarding the Pahari identity and culture vis-à-vis languages like Pahari, Punjabi, Urdu, and English. The study is ethnographic and is based on detailed observation and in-depth interviews of a sample of 91 people belonging to three generations. The study concludes that Pahari speaking community especially the Abbasi tribe, on the whole, claims to protect their culture and identity but gradually each new generation is hesitant in continuing Pahari as the symbol of their identity. As a result, language is, to a great extent, shifting towards Urdu. On a minor level, its shift to English and Punjabi cannot be ignored. The paper also explores certain reasons latent behind this kind of attitude. It was jointly funded by GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, formerly GTZ, in the Developing World the German development organisation of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Development) and the British Council. Language and Social Cohesion in the Developing World brings together fifteen of the most important papers presented at the conference. An introductory chapter relates the discussions which appear here to previous work on social cohesion and identifies eleven important lessons which can be drawn from these studies.     International Journal of Business, Economics and Law, Vol. 15, Issue 2 (April) ISSN 2289-1552 2018 IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE BUSINESS WRITING OF LEARNERS IN THE SECOND LANGUAGE CONTEXT IN PAKISTAN Saima Bhaur ABSTRACT This research aims to study the impact of technology on enhancing the business writing skills of learners in the second language (L2) context. The paper explores the role of modern technology in teaching and learning of the target language at the educational institutions in Pakistan. It also studies how technology can interfere and / or enhance achieving the academic writing competencies of the young learners especially at the higher education level. The literature analyzes and compares the use of technology and its implications not only in Pakistan but also in other countries where L1 and L2 are coexisting and mastering L2 is essential for business writing. Employing the experimental research design, control group and experimental group were used to study the causal relationship between the dependent and independent variables. The results establish that experimental group showed considerable improvement in language acquisition because technology was used as a tool for teaching and learning in a classroom setting. On the contrary, the control group was taught using the traditional method, which was not as effective. The study recommends and emphasizes the use of technology in a language-learning classroom at the higher education level as well as at the tertiary level, because it can foster proficiency in acquiring competence in business writing in the second language context. Abstract The purpose of the study is to explore the preferred language learning styles of the undergraduate students based on their gender. In Pakistan, the traditional lecture method is most commonly used at the undergraduate level which is teacher centred (Hussain, Azeem & Shakoor, 2011), and does not account for the learner and learning style differences. The difference in learning styles varies from one individual to another; thus, influencing the overall language learning process and performance (Manochehr, 2006). The present study used a mixed method approach, with Kolb’s learning style model (1986) as the basis of the theoretical framework to determine individual learning styles. The sample of the study was selected through purposive sampling technique and comprised of 60 undergraduate students and 10 teachers who were teaching English to these students. Data was collected from the students studying English at the undergraduate level and their teachers by using survey questionnaire and semi structured interviews respectively. Data collected from the survey questionnaire and interviews was analysed in the form of descriptive statistics. The findings of the study confirmed that gender differences had a direct influence on the learning style preferences of the students. Moreover, both male and female students showed a tendency for Active Experimentation (AE) style of learning, indicating that they want to be actively engaged in their own learning process, instead of merely listening to the lectures being delivered in the traditional method.
