Udinese led 2-0 with ten minutes to go following a Fabio Quagliarella strike and a Manuel Arboleda own goal, but Hernán Rengifo pulled one back for the Polish outfit before Arboleda registered at the right end this time to make it 2-2. • Smuda has now faced Italian opposition nine times during his coaching career and recorded W2 D2 L5. However, all four matches on Italian soil ended in defeat. • Smuda came up against Udinese in the first round of the 1997/98 UEFA Cup, during his tenure as coach of RTS Widzew Łódź. His charges won 1-0 in Poland only to go down 3-0 in the return leg at the Friuli Stadium, with Udinese's goals coming from Oliver Bierhoff, Paolo Poggi and Tomas Locatelli. • The current KKS Lech Poznań were founded in May 2006 via the merger of KS Amica Wronki and the original Lech Poznań. Before the first leg, Lech had never faced Italian opposition in any of their guises. • Udinese have now played seven games against Polish clubs in European competition and their record reads W4 D2 L1. They are unbeaten in their last six fixtures against Ekstraklasa sides. • The original Lech were founded in 1922 as Lutnia Poznań. They were the Polish state railway team for many years, which earned them the nickname of the 'Kolejorz' (Railwaymen). • The Lech in their name is a reference to Poland's mythical founder. According to legend, Lech, Čech and Rus were three brothers who founded the three Slavic nations of Poland, Bohemia and Ruthenia respectively. • Udinese's roots can be traced to the founding of a football division by the Udine Gymnastics and Fencing Society in 1896. The club's black-and-white striped shirts have won them the nickname of the 'Zebrette' (Little Zebras). • Udinese have won their last two UEFA Cup home games. • A 1-0 success at Feyenoord in their final UEFA Cup Group H encounter ended Lech's run of three European away games without a win. • Former Polish international midfielder Marek Koźmiński spent five years at Udinese between 1992 and 1997. • Udinese were involved in their debut UEFA competition penalty shoot-out in the first round of this season's UEFA Cup. They beat BV Borussia Dortmund 4-3 on penalties at home after a 2-2 aggregate draw. Last updated 24.02.2009 13:29:07CET www.uefa.com Match background 1 Udinese Calcio - KKS Lech Poznań Thursday 26 February 2009 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) MATCH PRESS KIT Friuli, Udine • Lech have not been involved in a UEFA competition shoot-out in their current incarnation. That said, Amica did win 5-4 on penalties at Budapest Honvéd FC in the second qualifying round of the 2004/05 UEFA Cup after a 1-1 aggregate draw. The original Lech Poznań, for their part, were beaten 5-4 on spot-kicks by eventual winners FC Barcelona after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline in the second round of the 1988/89 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. • Peruvian striker Rengifo is Lech's top scorer in the competition with four goals since the first round. Bosnian Semir Stilić and Sławomir Peszko have also chipped in with two strikes apiece. • Udinese's four-goal leading UEFA Cup scorer Fabio Quagliarella is the only player to have found the target more than once for the club in this season's competition. • Udinese's Alexis Sánchez is suspended for this match, while team-mate Maurizio Domizzi is also within a booking of a ban, as are Lech's Arboleda, Stilić and Zlatko Tanevski. Peszko is available again after serving a suspension. • The winners of this tie will face FC Zenit St. Petersburg or VfB Stuttgart in the Round of 16 on 12 and 18/19 March, and will play the first leg at home.

  • Impact of Mergers and Acquisitions on Sport Performance of Football Clubs in the Highest Professional League in Poland

Whereas for some econo- mists (and club owners) they are just business operations aimed to improve sport and financial performance of organizations, the supporters often reject this proposition on the grounds of identity and symbol issues. Given the lack of studies devoted to consolidation operations in Polish professional sports, the paper undertakes the analysis of M & As in the highest professional football league in Poland (Ekstraklasa) since 1989 with the aim to verify their impact on sport performance of the football clubs involved. The results of this multiple case study indicate that the main motivations for M & As in the sports club context are the same as in other industries (search for specific assets, strategic considerations, profit and loss calculations). In addition, the success rate also resembles the one in other sectors: only in one case (out of four studied) the merger has led to a clear and lasting improvement of sport performance (although not an immediate one).

  • You Go Ahead, Cause Its Making Me Laugh... by Fausto Sala - Vice President FISSC
Year Number Jan - Mar 2 1 2012 You go ahead, cause its making me laugh... by Fausto Sala - Vice President FISSC “Olimpico” stadium in Rome, Sunday 5 February 2012. Around the 20 minute of the first half of Roma-Inter in South stand appeared a banner which read: “All at 15: the nature of things, by nature force”. As everybody knows the match was scheduled to be played on Saturday at 20.45, then anticipated at 15 and at last moved at the same time on Sunday, in contemporary with all other matches in serie A as the tradition was back in the past. Thus the roman fans wanted to underline this fact and their consent for the traditional shcedule of matches, remarking as only the snow emergency had forced the hands of those in command to revert to old habits of italian football fans. We can repeat until boredom that playing at night in the coldest days of the year is madness. Yet since January 18 up to February 5, between league and national cup, 21 matches at night have been programmed and out of these 19 in the north between Bergamo, Milan, Torino or Novara. But you think that who decides does not know such facts? But more the Lega is criticised, and more who guides the Lega continues to be bend to the will of the television networks who now have absolute power to decide the time in which games are playes, having tv rights now constitute the main income for the clubs. Thus the only concern of the Lega in these last seasons, whose president Maurizio Beretta has resigned since March of last year since he now passed to a top managerial post within UniCredit, was to see how to divide between the clubs the income coming from these rights with the consequent effect of half-empty stadiums to the benefit of sitting in cosy armchairs and sofas at home.
