The under lying mod- ernisation initiative is referred to as Proj ect LAND 400, which, along with training and integration capabilities, largely consists of replacing key combat vehicles, including the Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) and the M113AS4 armoured personnel carrier (APC) with an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).1 Proj ect LAND 400 involves planning over a relatively long time horizon and by intent is shaping forces through a relatively low- risk approach that will, within this context, maximise combat effectiveness.2 To assist with this decision, the Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group asked the RAND Corporation for help in assessing the range of trade- offs between tracked and wheeled combat vehicle classes. This request entailed completing three tasks. The first task involved assessing lessons learned about tracked and wheeled combat vehicles in recent conflict in vari ous parts of the world; the second task involved assessing the implications of advanced technologies on the vehicle classes; 1 The workhere is focused on Phase 3 of the Proj ect LAND 400 initiative. Phase 1 of the initiative was largely a scoping activity; Phase 2 is focused on a follow-on mounted combat reconnaissance capability, largely defined by a combat reconnaissance vehicle (CRV) replace- ment to the ASLAV; and Phase 3 is focused on a follow-on mounted close combat capability, largely defined by an IFV replacement to the M113AS4. 2 An industry pre sen ta tion given by BRIG Greg McGlone, Director General, Combined Arms Fighting System, on November 27, 2015, indicates an interest in “minimising develop- mental risk” using “mature technologies with a growth path.” iii iv Assessing Vehicles for Australian Mounted Close Combat Operations and the third task involved examining system- level implications of the dif­fer ent classes of vehicles. This work should be of interest to Australian defence policymak- ers and planners, especially those directly affiliated with the Proj ect LAND 400 initiative. U.S. policymakers and planners and other mem- bers of the American, British, Canadian, and Australian (ABCA) armies may find this work of interest, because it identifies the trade- off space that one of the core member allies of this group faces in its effort to modernise its mechanised forces, and it may offer ideas with re spect to future integration and collaboration among the larger group of allies. Employing this method, a tracked vehicle driven by friction forces from a frame mounted with piezoelectric elements was developed. The vehicle is designed with no driver sprocket, no idler-wheel and no supporting bogie wheels, and the vehicle thus requires no lubrication and has potential application in plan- etary exploration. The frame consists of a pair of piezoelectric transducers. Each transducer comprises four annular parts jointed by beams adhered with piezoelectric ceramics. The tracks are set to the outer surface of the annular parts by means of track ten- sion. Traveling rotating waves are generated by piezoelectric transducers in the annular parts, which generate microscopic ellipti- cal motions at the interface of the tracks. The microscopic elliptical motions from the piezoelectric transducers drive the track vehicle to move. Finite elements analysis was carried out to verify the operation principle using commercial software ANSYS. Piezoelectric transducers were fabricated, assembled and tested to validate the concepts of the proposed rover vehicle and confirm the simulation results.

Along with our teammates, BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman Space Technology, United Defense performed a series of technology investigations, conducted simulation-supported concept development and down-selected to a best value integrated survivability suite (ISS) consisting of an optimal mix of armor, electronic warfare sensors, processors and soft kill countermeasure, and hard kill active protection in November of 1998. At that point the program transitioned to a development and demonstration phase in which the United Defense led team designed and fabricated the selected survivability suite (ISS), integrated the ISS onto a customer-selected EMD version BFVA3 test-bed and conducted live threat defeat testing. Static testing against a wide array of live threats successfully concluded in September of 2002. By December of 02, the IAAPS team was back at the range with the test-bed reconfigured for on-the-move (OTM) testing. Successful OTM defeats were conducted with the soft kill countermeasure in January of 2003, with hard kill defeats conducted in February through May of 2003.

Kracman [email protected] Abstract A recent study has introduced a procedure to quantify the survivability of a team of armoured fighting vehicles when it is subjected to a single missile attack. In particular this study investigated the concept of collaborative active protection systems, focusing on the case where vehicle defence is provided by high power radio frequency directed energy weapons. The purpose of the current paper is to demonstrate how this analysis can be extended to account for more than one missile threat. This is achieved by introducing a jump stochastic process whose states represent the number of missiles defeated at a given time instant. Analysis proceeds through consideration of the sojourn times of this stochastic process, and it is shown how consideration of these jump times can be related to transition probabilities of the auxiliary stochastic process. The latter probabilities are then related to the probabilities of detection and disruption of missile threats. The sum of these sojourn times can then be used to quantify the survivability of the team at any given time instant. Due to the fact that there is much interest in the application of high energy lasers in the context of this paper, the numerical examples will thus focus on such directed energy weapons for armoured fighting vehicle team defence.
