But lost in the arguments about what he means is the very basic question of what he is. This project aims to understand Grendel qua monster and investigate how we associate him with the monstrous. I identify for study a number of traits that distinguish him from the humans of the poem— all of which cluster around either morphological abnormality (claws, gigantism, shining eyes) or deviant behavior (anthropophagy, lack of food preparation, etiquette). These traits are specifically selected and work together to form a constellation of transgressions, an embodiment of the monstrous on which other arguments about his symbolic value rest.

PERRONE In creating this bibliography, I am indebted to Special Collections cataloger Silvana Notarmaso, who cataloged and re-cataloged the Milton Collection in conjunction with the 2011 exhibition, John Milton and the Cultures of Print. The information in the checklist was largely drawn from her careful research and knowledge of rare book description. I would also like to thank Thomas Fulton of the Rutgers Department of English for many helpful suggestions. Introduction Special Collections and University Archives at Rutgers University Libraries is fortunate to hold a significant collection of early editions of works by John Milton. Numbering fifty-six books, it is the fifth-largest Milton collection at a public university in the United States. Originally known as Queen’s College, Rutgers was chartered in 1766 as a small private institution affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church. In the early records of the college, John Milton’s name appears in 1782, when members of the Athenian Society, the student literary society that started Rutgers’ first library, debated his work at one of their meetings. The work of the Society—and that of the college as a whole—was disrupted by the American Revolution, and no one knows what became of this fledging library. By the early nineteenth century, the college had a small library chiefly consisting of theological works. Two new literary societies, the Peithessophian and the Philoclean were founded in 1825. These societies built their own libraries, which compared favorably to the college library and were focused on literature.

    ALBERT STANBURROUGH COOK, CLASS OF 1872 BY JOHN T. SHAWCROSS Professor of English, Douglass College, Rutgers University EW can claim honored position among the Sons of Rutgers more justifiably than Albert Stanburrough Cook. Outstanding Fundergraduate, member of the faculty, frequent recipient of graduate degrees (earned and honorary), Cook's association began in 1868 at age fifteen and continued in one way or another until his death in 1927. Here was a professor with all the rights and privileges thereunto appertaining by dint of broad knowledge, great energy, and intense concern for the state of education. This tall, bearded man, thin of face, perhaps even looked to some like the "typical" professor. Aside from the great residue of knowledge and thought which we have in print, A. S. Cook's contributions to education remain with all college students in that type of class meeting which he called a "seminary." The small group of students discussing per- haps Aelfric's humor with an instructor who prods with genial but incisive questions owes much to his foreward-looking attempts to improve learning. At Yale University such classes were preparing young men (and ladies too—much to the old grads' chagrin) to carry on the traditions that were building from 1889 through 1927. For Albert Stanburrough Cook was something of a myth in his own time—well known for his small classes of Ph.D. aspirants in Old English or Middle English or Poetics, an innovation as he conducted them. It is no wonder that this giant of American schol- arship became a kind of myth: he arrived at importance early in life, pursued supposedly opposed disciplines, maintained a balance in his careers of teaching, writing, and administration, and was ardent in his concern for improvements in education.
