unday April 29 dawned fine and clear over the Eastern Suburbs, for Doug Corbett’s “Celebration Day”, the clouds rolled in, but the rain stayed away, enabling the Seniors to occupy 3 courts with social players until 1 o’clock. The format was a bit of fun – players were allowed to use their S special “card” to replay a particular point in the match, each partner being able to use one per set. There was a bit of cheating going on, but it didn’t really matter in the end. “Doug’s Day” , with a free lunch and morning tea, was a success, and Doug said it was one of the highlights of his tennis life. He praised some of his friends and colleagues, vowing that they “made him a better player than he would have been” – which is typical of the man. It was wonderful to see his wife Shirley and other members of the family, Susan, David and Jacinta along with some social tennis friends of Doug’s as well. Humility, gentlemanly qualities and an enjoyable sense of humour typify Doug, and we relish the fact that he can represent us once again on the world stage. We will follow with interest his “escapades” in Umag, Croatia in September, as he plays in the Cup (M80+) and the 85+ Singles and Doubles in the Individual Championships. Everyone should keep their eyes on our website! www.tennisseniors.org.au/nsw

Frogs’ Day - Social tennis June 3

This will be a day to remember! Craig Edwards is running some fun social tennis, starting at 10am, with lunch at 12.30, and more tennis from 1 till 3pm. It’s a French theme - croissants, frogs’ legs, French Open tennis on TV, and much more. Craig will be assisted by his lovely wife Natalie, and the Committee. The day was inspired by Beki Boulet, who is an English woman married to a Frenchman. Wear Red, White and Blue! $20 a head.

The day is not restricted to members only - bring a friend! Have FUN.

BOOKINGS are ESSENTIAL, as there are only 7 courts. See contact details below.

May 2012 From the You can’t do Secretary’s Desk anything about

ational Myeloma Day on May 9 is to raise awareness of this rare blood disease which afflicts over 1300 Australians per year. It your ancestors can be diagnosed accidentally (as mine was, through having N the MRI on my sore knee) or through the patient complaining about fatigue, weakness, pain in their bones, frequent infections, dizziness and feeling unusually short of breath. I have had none of the symptoms. but you can In July last year, when I was at home and had changed into dry clothes after a nightsweat, I fainted on the way to my bedroom, fracturing my left fibula in the fall. This was to cause great discomfort and I was confined to a wheel chair for nearly six months as the bone did not heal. Monthly greatly treatment by infusion with Chemotherapy used to take 96 hours, in hospital, and I could not even take myself to the bathroom. The Bone Marrow transplant took place on January 19 after the Chemo th influence your drug “Melphalan” had been administered on the 18 . This took every cell from my bone marrow, and the infusion of my own white blood cells was the start of a recovery which could take from 3 to 6 months. After 3 months of lethargy, nausea and general illness, I began to feel better. It became descendants less like being “hit by a truck” – and I can now say I feel “normal” once again (some may dispute the fact that I was ever “normal”!) The drug Thalidomide was part of the treatment process, and has caused “Peripheral Neuropathy”, which is a very unpleasant “tingling” sensation in the feet and hands (it is damage to the nerves). This is particularly irritating at night, when insomnia is also present. I am no longer on Thalidomide, but the side-effect remains until long after you stop taking it. I am to find out on May 9 whether I have to go back on it again. The Professor should also tell me the extent of the presence of cancer cells in my system, and if I need continuing treatment. Due to my broken bone, tennis is still out of the question, but I am doing strengthening exercises, and the gap in the bones has now closed, so it’s possible for me to recover almost fully. My goal is to play one event at Forster in August, and I have a partner “in training” for the big day! Here’s hoping I get the “green light” from the Physio! That’s where I’m up to .... I trust that I will catch up with many of you at tournaments very soon. Robyn.
