This thesis is copyright material and no quotation from it may be published without proper acknowledgement. i Abstract The field of Gothic studies is an ever-evolving one, and while existing critical studies have approached the Gothic through various thematic, cultural, and political concerns, little attention has been paid to the Gothic in Young Adult literature (YA), and specifically to the portrayal of the supernatural in twenty-first-century YA Gothic literature. This thesis fills this gap through close analysis of a selection of YA Gothic novels and by drawing from a variety of interdisciplinary sources, including mythology, folklore, fairy tales, and earlier Gothic texts. Central to this thesis is the understanding of the shifting representation of the supernatural as well as the Gothic and as such, over four chapters, this thesis traces the evolution of the supernatural, focusing primarily on what I refer to as the ‘supernatural Other’ in Gothic literature. Accordingly, it begins by an exploration of the rise of the supernatural Gothic, considering a spectrum of earlier Gothic narratives from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. This thesis demonstrates that the portrayal of the supernatural has always been defined in terms of experimentation, re-imaginings, and the authors’ original approach to the supernatural. The supernatural Other is indeed a hybrid, created from the fusion of myths, folklore, and fairy tales. The study then analyses a range of twenty-first-century YA Gothic texts that offer a re-evaluation of supernatural beings who have been represented as monsters. I consider how such beings embody the societal and cultural fears and anxieties of particular times; the vampire in particular has often been read as a reflection of such anxieties. ii The Gothic’s concern with Otherness as well as the portrayal of supernatural beings as the ultimate Others and the personification of the uncanny, is central to the YA Gothic narratives examined in this thesis. However, the thesis argues that while the YA Gothic’s supernatural Other is often portrayed as dangerous and as a threat destabilizing the set geographical and physiological boundaries as well as the prevalent cultural norms, values and morals of the time, it is also represented as sublime and desirable. The thesis concludes by examining the role of the supernatural in the development of the heroines of YA Gothic and suggests that supernatural Otherness becomes a medium of empowerment for the heroines who embrace it, allowing them to renegotiate their position within their socio-cultural environment, and thus reflecting social and cultural shifts in how gender is represented and understood. It is hoped through the discussion in this thesis to further the critical debate about twenty-first-century YA Gothic. iii Acknowledgements The crafting of this thesis is only made possible by the invaluable guidance of my supervisory team. In the last two decades, the field of Gothic Literary Studies has witnessed a remarkable surge of critical and scholarly examinations of the Gothic in various forms and media. In twenty- first-century YA literature, in particular, the Gothic is thriving. Indeed, a great number of Gothic narratives written and marketed for a young adult audience, and featuring adolescents as the main protagonists are published every year. Despite this, however, the field of YA Gothic literature is notable for its lack of scholarship. Thus, this research seeks to examine the twenty-first-century YA Gothic. Through an examination of what I term ‘the supernatural Other’, I am interested primarily in the evolution of the portrayal of the supernatural. I argue that there

Pam Eyink and Ellen Bagley retired from our staff after 35 and 18 years, respectively, of outstanding service. We also said farewell to our longtime Ballet Production Manager, Stacie Bigl. Milena Treer now keeps all in order for Dayton Opera in her role as Artistic Administrator–Opera, and Cory Wilhite is the new Artistic Administrator for Dayton Ballet. We’re also pleased to welcome Emily Duffin in her new role as Production Stage Manager. In other staff news, Jeremy Davit succeeded Amber Rose as Chief Development Officer, and we also welcomed Dennis TenWolde and Karen Dempsey Volke to our fundraising team.

    CHAPTER V CONCLUSION Based on the writer analysis on New Moon novel, it concludes that the post-colonialism pattern can be applied to analyze the stereotypical image of Native American. Meyer wrote their characteristics based on common people’s knowledge of the Natives American and on how the colonial sees their minority people. There are four types of Native American stereoypes found in Meyer’s novel; with regards to the claim of werewolves who are uncivilized beings. First is they have inferior status in comparison to the Vampire/the White American. The Native American is represented as the inferior, because people that has been colonized have an inferiority complex according to Fanon (1986). As Gramsci stated in hegemony that the ideology is the representation of social interest or the dominant culture. In New Moon, the dominant character is the Vampire. In addition, from the history point of view, Edward Cullen the Vampire originally came from Europe while Jacob Black is a Native American which the history reveal originated from Asia. In New Moon, the Vampire have their own royalty or ruling class, the Volturi, while the Native American only live in pack and have their own tribe’s leader. Alice Cullen in the story stated that Volturi is very powerful and is the reason why Werewolves or the Native Americans are afraid of them. This also fits with Gramsci ideas of hegemony, where the ruling class 44 will get domination not only by force but the willingness of people who wants to be ruled.     Shiri Rosenberg Is the Twilight Saga a Modern-Time Fairy Tale? A Study of Stephenie Meyer’s Source Material from Folklore and Canonical Narratives Abstract: The article presents an analysis of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels as modern literary fairy-tales. To this end, the discussion will refer to structuralist critics, and identify “narrative functions” from folktales (stock images and episodes, stock character functions, characteristic sequences of episodes), used by Meyer in her vampire novels. As it turns out, Meyer modified folklore material to sustain a long and variously themed narrative: by embedding numerous subplots, by rearranging functions between characters, and creating composite and collective characters that combine contradictory functions. The author transformed several folktales into a series of four novels about coming of age in the twenty-first-century United States. A detailed analysis of Meyer’s modifications of the folktale partially corroborates the feminist critique of Meyer’s representation of the protagonists as reinforced versions of cultural stereotypes and gender roles. However, some transformations, especially Meyer’s assignment of the hero-function to the female protagonist Bella, seem to suggest just the opposite, thus leading to the conclusion that the Twilight novels reflect the confusion caused by contradictory role-models and aspirations, the confusion that seems to be inherent in a coming-of-age novel. Schneider (2005) states that stereotyping people means giving people in certain of groups the same image. To analyze a stereotypical image of Native American in New Moon and the history of it, the writer use Post-colonialism Approach. According to Loomba (2002, pp. 7 - 8), colonialism is a complex relationship between the native people and the newcomers. The colonizer or the new comer 1 are trying to re-make their own community in a community that is already exist.
