Following impeccable and thorough preparation, the brand with the four rings presents itself as the second- best manufacturer in the field of the eleven automotive brands. In his home round, Laurens Vanthoor achieved the best performance of all Audi drivers. The Belgian in the Audi R8 LMS of Audi Sport Team WRT qualified for grid position seven. “My lap wasn’t completely perfect, but basically we made good use of our possibilities,” said the 2014 Spa winner. “Admittedly, there was a clear gap to the top. Now, it’s important for me and my teammates Nico Müller and René Rast to get through the race without any mistakes.” The Frenchman Franck Perera in the Audi of Team I.S.R. Racing took eighth place and Christopher Haase (D) achieved position twelve for Saintéloc Racing. The French outfit’s performance was all the more remarkable given the fact that it had to reshuffle its programme following team leader Paolo Ruberti’s last-minute forfeit due to injury. The Italian was driver coaching at Hockenheim, Germany when his car had a brake issue, which resulted in a heavy crash at 200kph. While Paolo’s student was only bruised, Larbre’s pro racer ended up with a compound fracture to a lumbar vertebra that will prevent him from making a seventh career appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite a very tight schedule, team manager Jack Leconte could rely on Larbre’s experience and reputation to draft a pair of talented drivers to assist regular pilots Pierre Ragues and Yutaka Yamagishi: they were Frenchman Jean-Philippe Belloc, who knows the Vigeant-based squad very well after racing three times under their flag at the French endurance classic, and Dutchman Nicky Catsburg, who was part of the 2015 24 Hours of Spa-winning trio.

The 68th running of the endurance race will be the final test before production of the Audi R8 LMS starts. In September, Audi will start producing the new Audi R8 LMS for its customers. The fundamentally redesigned production-based race car instantly won its first 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in May. Now the second test in endurance racing is coming up on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the Belgian Ardennes. Only after this test will Audi determine the final specifications. “The races at Spa and at the Nürburgring are not comparable. The Spa 24 Hours are part of the Blancpain Endurance Series in which, due to the regulations, a different rating of the various race cars applies than at the Nürburgring,” says Romolo Liebchen, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. The teams work together with a different tire manufacturer who is mandatory for all the participants in this series.
