  • Question for Written Answer E-003824/2019/Rev.1 to the Commission Rule 138 Christine Anderson (ID), Charlie Weimers (ECR)
Question for written answer E-003824/2019/rev.1 to the Commission Rule 138 Christine Anderson (ID), Charlie Weimers (ECR) Subject: Commission programme ‘Sport as a means of integration and social inclusion for migrants’ The Commission has set up a programme to promote, among other things, the ‘exchange of successful methods for integrating migrants’ through sporting activities. This encompasses various projects such as SFR-2287CF34 in Germany (EUR 240 000) and SFR-A72056BB in Italy (EUR 200 740). How many so-called migrants (broken down by age, gender, country of origin and project supported) are taking part in the programme? EUR 2 million have been set aside for the programme in the 2016-2018 funding period. What results are known to the Commission (with an indication of the survey and evaluation methods) in terms of successful integration? German football is seeing an increase in violent incidents. A whole team (BV Altenessen 06 II) was recently suspended after players and the coach attacked the referee. The names of players would indicate a migrant background (due to EU-data protection rules their names can not be published) Does the Commission programme include measures to prevent similar outbreaks of violence in sport from happening in the context of the projects? If no such measures have been put in place yet, how might the Commission support the Member States in the fight against acts of violence in sport carried out by migrants? Supporters1 1 This question is supported by Members other than the authors: Guido Reil (ID), Lars Patrick Berg (ID), Markus Buchheit (ID), Maximilian Krah (ID), Bernhard Zimniok (ID), Catherine Griset (ID), Gunnar Beck (ID), Sylvia Limmer (ID), Joachim Kuhs (ID), Nicolaus Fest (ID), Jörg Meuthen (ID) PE644.443v02-00.

  • Major Interpellation for Written Answer
Major interpellation for written answer G-001001/2020 to the Commission Rule 139 Christine Anderson, Jörg Meuthen, Jérôme Rivière, Harald Vilimsky, Peter Kofod, Laura Huhtasaari, Jaak Madison, Gunnar Beck, Lars Patrick Berg, Markus Buchheit, Nicolaus Fest, Maximilian Krah, Joachim Kuhs, Sylvia Limmer, Guido Reil, Bernhard Zimniok on behalf of the ID Group Subject: The President of the Commission’s interference in the Croatian elections – violation of the Code of Conduct for the Members of the Commission On Friday 3 July, the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen appeared in a promotional video for the Croatian political party Hrvatska demokratska zajednica (HDZ) in the context of the recent national elections. She was filmed uttering the party’s campaign motto Sigurna Hrvatska (‘safe Croatia’) in a corridor of the Commission building, while her official title appeared on screen. This appearance has sparked outrage in the EU, as the President of the Commission is obliged to remain neutral. According to Article 9(3) of the Code of Conduct for Members of the Commission, Members ‘shall abstain from making public statements or interventions on behalf of any political party or organisation of the social partners of which they are members’. The Commission has expressed its regret over the incident, but has also sought to downplay its ramifications. While it accepted that technical mistakes were made 1 , it has boldly claimed that it was ‘the kind of things [sic] which must be permitted’ 2 , thereby implicitly denying that a breach of the Code of Conduct had occurred. 1. With particular regard to its Code of Conduct and the principle of neutrality, what is the Commission’s assessment of its President’s appearance in the aforementioned campaign video? 2.

  • Letter to EU Commissioner on Health and Food Safety on Maternal Healthcare During the COVID19 Pandemic
Mrs. Stella Kyriakides Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Dear Mrs. Kyriakides, EU Member States are dealing with unprecedented challenges arising from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and health systems are now focused on social distancing and avoidance of non-urgent, non-COVID-19 related medical care. Unfortunately, the strains on our health systems and the difficulties are not being borne equally by the population - pregnant women in particular - still require competent and compassionate labor, birth and postpartum care. We have been approached by the international NGO “Human Rights in Childbirth” regarding concerns about the negative consequences to labor and birth care as health systems focus on tackling COVID-19. In this time of a health crisis, changes are being made to the provision of pregnancy and birth care which are not based on scientific evidence, WHO guidelines or guidelines of relevant European professional organisations. Those changes are arguably unnecessary and, in many cases, not proportional to the response required to the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, we are informed that: • Maternity services are being de-prioritised with regards to adequate staffing, personal protective equipment for staff and access to needed resources • Community and out of hospital maternity services (including midwifery units and home birth) are being closed down without warning • Women are being forced to submit to unwanted inductions and scheduled caesarean sections with no obstetric indication • Women are being separated from their newborn infants • Women are being denied the right to a companion in labour and birth, as well as visitors All citizens are entitled to the protection of their right to the highest attainable level of health during this crisis.
