Pooni Department of Zoology, Punjabi University, Patiala-147 002, Punjab, India E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Eighteen species belonging to 14 genera viz., Deuterocopus Zeller (Deuterocopinae), Oxyptilus Zeller, Sphenarches Meyrick, Stenoptilia Hübner, Stenoptilodes Zimmerman, Lantanophaga Zimmerman, Amblyptilia Hübner, Gypsochares Meyrick, Exelastis Meyrick, Tomotilus Yano, Procapperia Adamczewski, Megalorrhipida Amsel, Prichotilus gen. nov. and Stenodacma Amsel (Pterophorinae) of the respective subfamily of the family Pterophoridae (Pterophoroidea) have been collected from northwestern India and dealt with taxonomically. Key to the presently examined 13 genera of the subfamily Pterophorinae has been prepared on the basis of wing venation and male and female genitalic characters. Further, keys to the species of the genera such as Exelastis Meyrick, Megalorrhipida Amsel and Stenodacma Amsel represented by more than one species have also been furnished. The genus Tomotilus Yano is being reported for the first time from India. The distribution of the species Deuterocopus planeta Meyrick, Stenoptilia petraea Meyrick, Stenoptilodes taprobanes (Felder and Rogenhöfer), Amblyptilia forcipeta (Zeller), Exelastis phlyctaenias Meyrick, Procapperia pelecyntes (Meyrick) and Trichoptilus bidens Meyrick stands updated through an addition of more localities from northwestern India. Three new species, one of genus Lantanophaga and two of genus Megalorrhipida have been reported from the area, under reference. Besides giving an illustrated account of the new species, the genitalic account of already known species have been added to improve the descriptive account of these biological species. One of these very common forms appeared to be a new sibling species which is described in this paper: Cyme laeta spec. nov. Four long forgotten allied taxa, described by the authors Rudolf van Eecke and Gustaaf Hulstaert, are compared and treated: Asura roseifusa Hulstaert, 1924a and Asura flavagraphia Van Eecke, 1926 are placed in Cyme (comb.nov.); Asura punctilinea Hulstaert, 1924a syn.nov. and Asura punctilinea aquilonis Hulstaert, 1924b syn.nov. are synonymized with Cyme reticulata Felder, 1861. Already known for their remarkable animal endemism, the islands are home to four unique palm species, three of which are described here for first time. The habitus and genitalia are illustrated for the twelve species of Pterophoridae known from the Galápagos Islands (Ecuador). The status of one species is discussed, as it may be the unknown female of Postplatyptilia minima spec. nov. Five species are described as new: Postplatyptilia huigraica, P. mini- ma, Platyptilia nigroapicalis, Oidaematophorus cristobalis and O. devriesi. Redescriptions and/or diag- noses are given for the other seven species. Lectotypes are designated for Pterophorus nephogenes Meyrick and Platyptilia brevipennis Zeller. A key based on adult external features is provided. Four species were found to be possibly endemic to the archipelago. New foodplant records are given for two species. To answer the problem is used historical method consisting of; heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results show, Orang Biak in the village of Sowek has long lived living on a shady sea in the archipelago Aruri, Supiori Island. Biak tribe in the village of Sowek, prefer Sowek people, geographical and topographic village of Sowek more dominated by the sea and maggrof forest almost 75% and only has 25% of dry land, causing people Sowek livelihood on natural resources oceans. As sea people, all the activities of the Sowek people take place on the surface of the ocean, except when they want to travel to the mainland for the purposes of gardening, labor and so forth. The initial contact of the Sowek community to the outside world has been going on since the eighteenth centuries, through voyages and head-trawls to the Maluku, Ternate-Tidore region through the Raja Ampat archipelago. The Sowek people have also established trade contacts with other tribes in Papua that inhabit the northern coast of Papua, towards the east and south of Papua. -

Lantana Camara: an ALIEN WEED, ITS IMPACT on ANIMAL HEALTH and STRATEGIES to CONTROL

The red flower variety (L. camara var. aculeata) of this weed is mainly toxic and usually prevalent in tropical Lantadenes and sub-tropical countries. Lantana leads to hepatotoxicity, photosensitization and intrahepatic cholestasis almost in all the animals. LA is the main toxic pentacyclic triterpenoid present in this weed. Allelopathy Lantadene toxicity leads to fatty degeneration, bile duct hyperplasia, gall bladder edema, degeneration Hepatotoxic of parenchymal cells and portal fibrosis observed on histopathological examination. L. camara toxicity causes fluctuation in hematological as well as in biochemical parameters. The management of toxic Poisonous effects can be achieved by activated charcoal, vaccination and supportive therapy but are not much effective. Besides the harmful effects of this plant, there are some beneficial effects also including anti- inflammatory, hepatoprotective action, antitumor action etc. The control of this weed is difficult because of its allelopathic action. Nowadays this plant is used in many recent advanced techniques like phytoremediation of particulate pollution, phytoextraction of heavy metals and many others. -

Oceania 42 (2007) 12–21 Birds on the rim: a unique Lapita carinated vessel in its wider context STUART BEDFORD and MATTHEW SPRIGGS Keywords: Lapita, Teouma, modelled clay birds, pot burials. Abstract This paper describes a decorated carinated vessel excavated at the Teouma Lapita site, on the south coast of Efate, central Vanuatu. The vessel contained human bones and, following reconstruction, was found to have had four modelled birds on its rim. The incidence and dating of other burial pot assemblages is examined to place the find in a wider context within the Island Pacific. The Teouma Lapita site on the south coast of Efate, Central Vanuatu was uncovered through construction work in 2003. It is one of the earliest Lapita sites yet identified in Vanuatu, dating to c. 3200-3000 BP, and excavations in 2004 revealed it to be the site of the earliest cemetery yet found in the Pacific (Bedford et al. 2004, 2006). The well-preserved nature of the site and the identification of distinct activity areas provide a rare opportunity to define in detail Lapita ceramic function and use. This is particularly the case in the cemetery area where an assortment of decorated Lapita vessels was associated with burial ritual. Amongst the sherds recovered in the cemetery area of the site in 2004 was a modelled clay bird’s head (Figure 1) very similar to one found in the SZ-8 Lapita site on Nendo Island in the Reef-Santa Cruz Group of the Southeast Solomons (Green 1979b:41). Dentate decoration can be seen running from behind the neck to underneath the eye and again above the eye.
