    1 Chess Theory – Its Structure And Evolution Franco Pratesi Introduction When modern chess started to be played, there were several aspects tangled together. Nobody could understand it as a new game. Many el- ements of the classical chess game were indeed still present, so that it was rather a new way of playing a traditional game, alla rabbiosa, in a crazy way, with increased fight elements. In different places, changes in the rules occurred in different times; this is far from surprising if we consider that in addition to the moves of bishop and queen other changes involved castling, en passant capture, promotion, and so on. The same transformation can be differently seen, if considered from nowadays. In reflecting on the history of chess at the time, we have to try and reconstruct its environment as truly as possible. This is however not enough. We have to apply subsequent knowledge too, as now avail- able to us. Thus let us thus first examine the evolution of chess theory from the present point of view, then add some detail on the progress at the time and its guidelines, and then outline following developments. 1 – Retrospective view of chess theory Theory of one game A preliminary approach is required for defining any game, with its specific rules. From this point of view, it is not possible to speak of a game of chess. Many versions of chess have been played in various countries in the course of time; many different chess games have been further introduced and new ones continue to be described from day to day.

    WILHELM STEINITZ Der erste offizielle Weltmeister und seine Herausforderer Als in Wien des Jahres 1836 der findige Schneidermeister Joseph Ma- dersperger das Prinzip der modernen Nähmaschine entdeckt, wird am 14. Mai 1836 dem Schneider und Talmud-Lehrer Josef Salomon Steinitz und seiner Frau Anna in der böhmischen Hauptstadt Prag ihr neuntes Kind geboren. Dieser Sohn erhielt den jüdischen Namen Wolf und wurde später von ihm in Wilhelm umgewandelt. In den fol- genden Jahren werden noch vier jüngere Geschwister von Wilhelm geboren, die aber alle im Kindesalter sterben. Als Wilhelm neun Jahre alt war, starb auch seine Mutter, worauf sein Vater ein zweites Mal heiratete und im Alter von 61 Jahren ein weiteres Kindchen zeugte. Die ganze Zeit über lebte die Familie Steinitz in äußerst ärmlichen Wilhelm Steinitz (1836 - 1900) Verhältnissen und es ist überliefert, dass sich Wilhelm - als er im Al- ter von 12 Jahren Schach erlernte – die Figuren selbst schnitzte und ihm als Spielbrett ein Stück karierter Stoff genügen musste. Dem Wunsch der Eltern nach sollte der kleinwüchsige Bub, der noch dazu mit einem Klumpfuß geboren wurde, wie etliche seiner Vorfahren ein Talmud-Gelehrter werden. Besonders groß wurde Wilhelm auch später nicht mehr; im Gegenteil: er brachte es nur auf eine Körpergröße von knapp 1,50 Meter und bedurfte Zeit seines Lebens einer Gehstütze. Im Jahr 1849 wurde der Zwangsaufenthalt der Juden im Ghetto aufgehoben und von nun an durften sie sich in der gesamten Donaumonarchie frei bewegen. Kaum 15-jährig verließ Wil- helm 1850 seine Familie und lebte wahrscheinlich auf der Straße, wo er sich mit Gelegenheits- jobs über Wasser hielt, denn erst ab 1855 ist ein neuer Wohnsitz nachweisbar.
