Sekty, nová náboženská hnutí a identita v Rusku v devadesátých letech 20. století v kontextu celospolečenských změn. Praha: Karlova univerzita, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut ruských a východoevropských studií, 2010. 111 s. Vedoucí diplomové práce Mgr. Karel Svoboda PhD. Anotace Diplomová práce „Sekty, nová náboženská hnutí a identita v Rusku v devadesátých letech 20. století v kontextu celospolečenských změn“ pojednává o menšinových náboženských hnutích v Rusku po rozpadu Sovětského svazu. Terminologická část vysvětluje rozdíl mezi pojmem „sekta“ a „nový náboženský směr“, úvodní historický přehled pak nastiňuje roli sekt v historii Ruska. Jádrem výzkumu jsou tři rozsáhlé kapitoly. První pojednává o dynamice náboženské situace ve vztahu k sektám v první polovině devadesátých let, popisuje hlavní směry a odnože sekt. - - 4 Annotation Diploma thesis „Sects, new religious movements and identity in Russia in the nineties of 20th century in the context of overall societal changes“ deals with the problem of minority religions in Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Terminological part explains the difference between the termin “sect” and “new religious movement”, introductory historical overview outlines the role of sects in the history of Russia. The hub of the study lays in three large chapters. The first deals with the dynamics of the religious situation in relation to sects in the first half of the 90s, classifies them and names the main representants. The second part deals with concrete manifestations of changes in the middle of the decade, for example the process Yakunin versus Dvorkin or the change of legislation in 1997. The third part seeks answer to the question what was the underlying cause of changes in social and legal position of sects and finds the anspher in the sphere of national identity. Klíčové bude období let 1996 – 1997, kdy se diskutoval proces Dvorkina s Jakuninem a taky přijetí nové restriktivní legislativy vůči sektám a novým náboženským směrům. Dvorkin, A. Sekty protiv cerkvi (Proces Dvorkina). Johnson, J. – Stepaniants, M. – Forest, B. (Ed.) Religion and identity in Modern Russia : the revival of orthodoxy and Islam. • Crafting Lutheran Pastors in Tanzania Perceptions of Theological Education and Formation in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania
STUDIA MISSIONALIA SVECANA CXIX Johannes Habib Zeiler Crafting Lutheran Pastors in Tanzania Perceptions of Theological Education and Formation in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania To Lukas and Julia Dissertation presented at Uppsala University to be publicly examined in Sal IV, Universitetshuset, Biskopsgatan 3, Uppsala, Friday, 7 December 2018 at 10:15 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Faculty of Theology). The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Professor Knut Holter (VID Specialized University, Norway; Faculty of Theology, Diaconia and Leadership Studies). Abstract Habib Zeiler, J. 2018. Crafting Lutheran Pastors in Tanzania. Perceptions of Theological Education and Formation in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. Studia Missionalia Svecana 119. 222 pp. Uppsala: Department of Theology, Uppsala University. ISBN 978-91-506-2725-1. The quest for theological education is embedded in the history of the churches in sub-Saharan Africa and is, at the same time, inherently linked to how the churches continue to evolve and shift in character over time. It relates to the self-understanding of the churches and their role in society, including their academic and pastoral obligations to adequately educate and train leaders to work in the localities. With its estimated 6.5 million members, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) is today one of the largest Lutheran churches in the world. The role and impact of institutions for theological education are high on the agenda in the ELCT, not least as the various educational institutions for ministerial training are often seen as important means in the processes of theologising and strategising for the future.

  • Researching New Religious Movements
Researching New Religious Movements ‘The most important “first” that this book achieves is its bold questioning of the whole intellectual apparatus of the sociology of religion as it has been applied to the understanding of the new religious movements. I am confident that Elisabeth Arweck’s study will quickly become required reading in the sociology of new religious movements.’ Professor David Martin, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, London School of Economics, University of London ‘Powerful and original . it succeeds triumphantly in being at the same time an important, high-quality academic study and a book for our times.’ Professor David Marsland, Professorial Research Fellow in Sociology, University of Buckingham New religious movements such as Scientology, Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Unification Church (Moonies) are now well established in mainstream cul- tural consciousness. However, responses to these ‘cult’ groups still tend to be overwhelmingly negative, characterized by the furious reactions that they evoke from majority interests. Modern societies need to learn how to respond to such movements and how to interpret their benefits and dangers. Researching New Religious Movements provides a fresh look at the history and development of ‘anti-cult’ groups and the response of main- stream churches to these new movements. In this unique reception study, Elisabeth Arweck traces the path of scholarship of new religious move- ments, exploring the development of research in this growing field. She con- siders academic and media interventions on both sides, with special emphasis on the problems of objectivity inherent in terminologies of ‘sects’, ‘cults’, and ‘brainwashing’. Ideal for students and researchers, this much- needed book takes the debate over new religious movements to a more sophisticated level.

  • The Gnostic L. Ron Hubbard: Was He Influenced by Aleister Crowley?
$ The Journal of CESNUR $ The Gnostic L. Ron Hubbard: Was He Influenced by Aleister Crowley? Massimo Introvigne CESNUR (Center for Studies on New Religions) [email protected] ABSTRACT: Scientology was defined by its founder himself, L. Ron Hubbard, as a “Gnostic religion.” In 1969, however, a Trotskyist Australian journalist and an opponent of Scientology, Alex Mitchell, disclosed in a Sunday Times article that Hubbard had been involved, in 1945–46, in the activities of California’s Agapé Lodge of the Ordo Templi Orientis, an occult organization led by British magus Aleister Crowley. The article generated a cottage industry of exposés criticizing Hubbard as having been a member of a “black magic” organization. Some scholars also believe Hubbard to have been influenced by Crowley in his subsequent writings about Dianetics and Scientology. While conflicting narratives exist about why exactly Hubbard participated in the activities of the Agapé Lodge and his leader, the rocket scientist Jack Parsons, the article argues that Hubbard researched magic well before 1945, came to conclusions about the role of magic in Western culture that are largely shared by 21st century scholars, and created with Scientology a system that is inherently religious rather than magic. KEYWORDS: Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, Babalon Working, Aleister Crowley, Jack Parsons, John Whiteside Parsons, O.T.O., Agapé Lodge. • The Devil Makers: Contemporary Evangelical Fundamentalist Anti-Mormonism
The Devil Makers: Contemporary Evangelical Fundamentalist Anti-Mormonism Massimo Introvigne MORE THAN ELEVEN YEARS AGO ON 31 December 1982 a film entitled The God Makers premiered at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, before an audience of 4,000 Evangelical Protestants. According to Ed Decker, an ex-Mormon who was the main producer of the film, its premiere marked the beginning of an epoch. Decker and his associate Dave Hunt, a well-known author of "anti-cult" books, subsequently published a book version of The God Makers in 1984. Decker later claimed that The God Makers had prevented millions of conversions to the Mormon church b e t w e e n 1982 and 1989. Even Decker was eventually forced to retract this extravagant claim. The God Makers, however, was reasonably successful in Evangelical circles, and on 13 December 1992—ten years after the original film—Decker premiered in a Salt Lake City church the sequel The God Makers II. A book followed in 1993.3 1. Ed Decker and Dave Hunt, The God Makers (Eugene, OR: Harvest House Publishers, 1984), 16. 2. In January 1990 Decker erroneously attributed to Elder M. Russell Ballard a statement that the Mormon church experienced a three million shortfall from projected conversions primarily because of the film (Saints Alive in Jesus Newsletter, Jan. 1990). The speech referred to by Decker, which Ballard delivered at Brigham Young University on 14 November 1989, mentioned nothing about a "shortfall"; instead it celebrated the continuing growth of the church notwithstanding the opposition of "a band of enemies." He included the film The God Makers among his examples.

  • From the History of Religions to the Study of Religion in Denmark: an Essay on the Subject, Organizational History and Research Themes
From the History of Religions to the Study of Religion in Denmark: An Essay on the Subject, Organizational History and Research Themes TIM JENSEN & ARMIN W. GEERTZ University of Southern Denmark & Aarhus University Abstract The history of the academic study of religion in Denmark resembles developments in other Nordic and European countries as it has moved from a primarily historical-philological and comparative ‘history of religions’ towards a broader ‘study of religion(s)’ that includes his- tory of religions together with theories and methods from a wide variety of the human, social and today also natural sciences. Uppsala University was one of the three main centers of positivism at the end of the 19th century, and its influence was evident and long-lasting also in Denmark. By the end of the 1970s, debates and reflections on methods and theories slowly began to have a greater impact, and from the mid-80s and especially mid-90s, also due to conscious efforts not least in Aarhus, methodological issues gained in importance. A turn towards contemporary religion also became evident. Today it may be claimed that a kind of balance has been achieved whereby historical and empirical studies of religions go hand in hand with theoretical and methodological reflections, and where a balance between, on the one hand, more classical comparative history of religions materials and approaches, and, on the other hand, new and different areas of research, and new and different approaches and theories are of equal importance. With regard to individual research, research programs, and study programs, the history of the history of religions in Denmark cannot be described in detail here.
