The Church Gathers Before God GREETINGS IN CHRIST

MUSIC FOR CENTERING “Alive” – Big Daddy Weave

*CALL TO WORSHIP #228, Chalice Hymnal L: The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; the Passover of gladness, the Passover of God.

C: From death to life eternal, from sin’s dominion free, our Christ has brought us over with hymns of victory.

L: Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light;

C: and, listening to his accents, may hear so calm and plain the voice of Christ, and hearing, may raise the victor strain.

L: Now let the heavens be joyful! Let earth its song begin! The world resound in triumph, and all that is therein;

C: let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend; for Christ the Lord has risen, our joy that has no end.

* OPENING HYMN “Christ Arose” Low in the grave he lay, Jesus my Savior, waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord! Refrain Up from the grave he arose, with a mighty triumph o’er his foes; he arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever, With his saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Vainly they watch his bed, Jesus my Savior; vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord! Refrain

Death cannot keep its prey, Jesus my Savior; he tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord! Refrain

* OPENING PRAYER L: Let us join together in prayer. Gracious and Almighty God, we say those words with humbleness of heart. For You, Lord, are God of all that is. As we gather before you this day, may your Holy Spirit be a movement of grace and power in our midst that our hearts may burst forth with praise for the Risen Christ. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.

* THE PEACE The people exchange with one another, by words and gesture, signs of peace and reconciliation.

FIRST SCRIPTURE READING 1 John 1:1-2:2; The Message From the very first day, we were there, taking it all in—we heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life appeared right before our eyes; we saw it happen! And now we’re telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us.

We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us, this experience of communion with the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our motive for writing is simply this: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy!

This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him.

If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we’re obviously lying through our teeth—we’re not living what we claim. But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin.

If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the other hand, if we admit our sins—simply come clean about them—he won’t let us down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing. If we claim that we’ve never sinned, we out-and-out contradict God—make a liar out of him. A claim like that only shows off our ignorance of God.

I write this, dear children, to guide you out of sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a Priest- Friend in the presence of the Father: Jesus Christ, righteous Jesus. When he served as a sacrifice for our sins, he solved the sin problem for good—not only ours, but the whole world’s.

Here’s how we can be sure that we know God in the right way: Keep his commandments.

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

JOYS AND CONCERNS

PRAYERS OF GOD’S PEOPLE

* DOXOLOGY “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow” Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

GOSPEL READING John 20:19-31; New Living Translation That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came. They told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.”

Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!”

“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.

Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

MESSAGE “being real”

* SONG OF PRESENTATION “He Lives” #226 I serve a risen Savior, he’s in the world today; I know that he is living, whatever others say. I see his hand of mercy, I hear his voice of cheer, and just the time I need him, he’s always near.

Refrain: He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way. He lives, he lives, salvation to impart! You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart.

In all the world around me I see his loving care, and though my heart grows weary, I never will despair. I know that he is leading through all the stormy blast; the day of his appearing will come at last. Refrain

Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and sing eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King! The hope of all who seek him, the help of all who find; none other is so loving, so good and kind. Refrain

* DISCIPLES OF CHRIST IDENTITY STATEMENT We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.
