  • The State of Sex: Tourism, Sex and Sin in the New American Heartland
THE STATE OF SEX The State of Sex is a study of Nevada’s legal brothels that situates the nation’s only legal brothel industry in the political economy of con- temporary tourism. Nevada is part of the “new American heartland,” as its pastimes, people, and politics have become more central to the nation. The rise of a service and leisure economy over the past 60 years has propelled sexuality into the heart of contemporary markets. Yet, neoliberal laws in the United States promote business but limit sexual commerce. How have Nevada’s legal brothels survived, while the rest of the country criminalizes prostitution? How do the brothels operate? Who works in them? This book brings social theory on globalizing econ- omies, politics, leisure consumption, and emotional labor in interactive service work together with research on contemporary prostitution and sexual commerce. The authors employ an innovative, multi-method sociological approach, combining historical analysis of how the brothels came to be with over a decade’s worth of ethnographic research on the current state of the industry. Barbara G. Brents, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Sociology and Faculty Affiliate in Women’s Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Crystal A. Jackson, M.A., is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Kathryn Hausbeck, Ph.D., is Senior Associate Dean of the Graduate College and Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. • Norm Macdonald
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NOVEMBER 21, 2008 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS NORM MACDONALD LIVE AT THE RIVER ROCK SHOW THEATRE SATURDAY, JANUARY 17 Perhaps best known for his offbeat delivery of “the fake news” on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” for five seasons, Norm Macdonald is a major comedic presence. The Quebec City-born actor and comedian began performing in comedy clubs across Canada in the mid-80’s. He eventually moved to Los Angeles where he became a writer for “The Dennis Miller Show” and later for the ABC sitcom, “Roseanne.” It was in 1993 when Macdonald joined the cast of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" after being discovered by producer Lorne Michaels during one of his stand-up routines. Once cast on the show, he ended up doing impressions of Bob Dole, Larry King, Charles Kuralt, David Letterman and Burt Reynolds. His most notable position on SNL however was his three-year stint as anchor of Weekend Update beginning each of his newscasts with his trademark line, “And now the fake news.” After leaving SNL in 1998, he starred in his own sitcom, “The Norm Show” which ran for three seasons on ABC followed by his second sitcom, “A Minute with Stan Hooper” which aired on FOX in 2003. In addition, he has done several motion pictures including Billy Madison (1995), Milos Forman’s Academy Award- nominated The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) and Dirty Work (1998). His voiceover work includes the role of “Lucky” in Eddie Murphy’s Doctor Dolittle films and the character of “Death” on FOX’s “Family Guy.” His sketch comedy album, Ridiculous was released by Comedy Central Records in 2006.

  • Moonlite Bunny Ranch
Moonlite Bunny Ranch Photographs by Stephan Gladieu Text by Anne Senges Six miles from Carson City, the capital of a state known for sin, stands the Moonlite Bunny Ranch, one of Nevada’s most famous brothels. It is located in a surreal, deserted-looking small town called Mound House on U.S. Route 50, where sex is the sole attraction. No fewer than four bordellos call it home. The Bunny Ranch, actually an oversized trailer with a fake Victorian front—literally a façade of grandeur—is the town jewel. Made famous by the HBO documentary series Cathouse, the establishment vaunts itself as a sort of Magic Kingdom of erotic thrills: a Disneyland of sex, inhabited by about 30 “hot and sexy” Cinderellas, minus the princess dress and, of course, the innocence. A prostitue arrives for work, passing the sign at the entrance of the Moonlite Bunny Ranch, a legal brothel owned by Dennis Hof, in Lyon County, one of the fews counties in the USA which permits legalized prostitution. Each prostitute from out of state works and sleeps in one of the brothel's 30 rooms during the entire duration of her stay. The local ones are allowed to go home after their shift. The Moonlite Bunny Ranch was featured in HBO reality TV show "Cathouse: The Series" between 2005 and 2007. www.reportage-bygettyimages.com The doorbell chimes, the girl who answers rings a little bell—customer!—and a bevy of women in sexy underwear and spike heels hurry into the lobby to welcome the new visitor. This is the sacrosanct tradition of the lineup, or presentation of the prostitutes, a crucial moment with winner-take- all stakes.

  • Dennis Miller
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 23, 2008 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS DENNIS MILLER LIVE AT THE RIVER ROCK SHOW THEATRE SATURDAY, MARCH 7 It's been said that Dennis Miller is "one of the premiere comedy talents in America today." While others are blunt assessing his comedic stature, Miller himself makes a virtue of understatement but there is nothing low key about his career. His first big break came in 1985 when after being discovered by producer Lorne Michaels at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, he was signed to NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” as the Weekend Update anchor where he stayed for six years. He then moved back to Los Angeles and hosted his own syndicated late night talk show “The Dennis Miller Show” in 1992 followed two years later by HBO’s “Dennis Miller Live” which had a nine- year run and earned Miller a total of five Emmy Awards. In 2000, Miller called the plays alongside Al Michaels and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback, Dan Fouts on ABC’s “Monday Night Football” for two seasons. Then in 2004, he hosted and executive produced “Dennis Miller” – a topical interview talk show which aired on CNBC. And just last year, he signed a deal with the US radio network, Westwood One to launch his own national three-hour talk radio program which made its debut in March, 2007. The show which has Miller engaging in serious discussions of American culture, current events, politics and their place in the global context continues to grow in popularity. According to Talkers Magazine, as of spring 2008, “The Dennis Miller Show” had approximately 1,500,000 listeners.

presents A film by Todd Stephens www.anothergaymovie.com ANOTHER GAY MOVIE SYNOPSIS Andy Wilson (Michael Carbonaro) is your typical All-American seventeen-year-old gay virgin. Like everyone else, he's dying to have sex. Totally out of the closet and mad- crazy horny, this naive high school senior is caught in that awkward vortex between child and adult. Much to the dismay of his mom, Mrs. Wilson (Lypsinka) - who wonders why all her carrots and cucumbers keep disappearing - Andy spends much of his private time practicing for the big moment when he'll finally take the plunge. Andy is not alone. He attends high school with his three best friends, all of them totally out-loud-and-proud: Jarod (Jonathan Chase) is a buff varsity-jock stud; Griff (Mitch Morris) is the valedictorian, sinewy sexy, and a closet romantic; and Nico (Jonah Blechman) is the pierced alternative-kid gay-cinema expert. The guys all have one thing in common - they're all “booty” virgins. Muffler (Ashlie Atkinson), the boys' “bull-dyke” Casanova stud bud, delights in teasing the boys, especially since Muffler is a cheerleader-magnet with loads of sexual experience under her mullet. The final straw for the guys comes at Muffler's graduation party, where everyone is having sex but them. That night they make a pact to do "the big A" by the end of summer. What follows is a raunchy ride on the bumpy road to virginity loss. Along the way, the film spoofs not only American Pie and gay movies like The Broken Hearts Club and even Stephen’s own Edge of Seventeen , but, the entire gay lifestyle is up for skewering.
