Conyngham Road

News October 2015 Welcome to your newsletter, and if you have just moved in, welcome to Conyngham Road!

Why Conyngham Road? The meaning of Conyngham is "village of the milk pail", it is an alternate spelling of Cunningham, and is of Irish/Gaelic derivation. So maybe it was once the site of a farm’s milking parlour, or maybe Mr Conyngham was a local dignitary and the road was named after him.

Your section of Conyngham Road borders an area called Victoria Park – a district created in 1836 as a high class residential area for people of wealth and influence. It quickly became established as the very best residential address in the whole of . Today Victoria Park is a designated conservation area - extra planning controls apply in order to maintain the original high standards of architecture and landscaping, and to protect the area’s quiet serenity, and every tree is subject to Council protection. Through the trees opposite the front of your houses, you will be able to see one of the listed properties in Victoria Park, , now a hall of residence, but once a grand family residence built around 1840. For more details about the area see: http://rusholmearchive.org/victoria-park, http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/511/conservation_areas/932/victoria_park_conservation_area.

“Upping It”

Last year, our fellow Rusholme residents to the west of /’curry mile’ swept the board in winning the trophies at Manchester City Council’s “Be Proud” community awards: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/pride-manchester-named-glitzy- town-8198465.

Their aim was to “UP” the amount of recycling from the properties in west Rusholme. And they did! They followed some very simple golden rules:

1. ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD WASTE IN ANY BIN OTHER THAN THE GREEN BIN 2. Put all possible recycling material, as per the recycling rules, in the GREEN BIN 3. Put all possible recycling material, as per the recycling rules, in the BLUE BIN 4. Put all possible recycling material, as per the recycling rules, in the BROWN BIN 5. PUT ABSOLUTELY THE MINIMUM IN THE GENERAL WASTE BIN/CONTAINER

They avoided the common mistakes:  They put all plastic bags in the grey/black general waste bin/maroon container.  They put all plastic items that haven’t previously held runny liquid – eg, meat trays, burger boxes, cake trays, etc, - in the grey/black general waste bin/maroon container.

This year, we will be providing an A4 laminate that explains all you need to know about the recycling rules in Manchester. PLEASE READ IT AND FOLLOW THE RULES.

This year, the aim is for St. Vincent’s to “Up It To The Max”.

Your “Upping It” rep is Sue Devlin. Contact her on [email protected] to make sure you have all you need to “Up It To The Max”. ie, access to: a small grey food waste caddy + biodegradable bags; a green bin; a blue bin; a brown bin; and a black bin.
