  • Cronica D'una Mirada: Clandestine Filmmaking Under Franco, 1960 - 1975 (English Translation of Guidebook)
Cronica D'Una Mirada: Clandestine Filmmaking Under Franco, 1960 - 1975 (English Translation of Guidebook) Introduction At a time when the prolific amount of audiovisual material on offer tends to bewilder us, rather than developing our viewpoint, with this collection we would like to offer something more than a mere selection of rare images, rescued from a past where there was a distinct lack of freedom of expression. Far from wishing to expand this climate of bewilderment by feeding a certain nostalgia, our intention is to vindicate the film medium as an essential tool for documenting, and understanding, our most recent history. The material presented in this collection was produced, at times by amateurs, from a marginalized position with respect to the usual production and distribution circuits, using the most precarious of technical equipment. It was conditioned by strict censorship and in open opposition to an authoritarian regime. In addition to offering an alternative point of view to that imposed by the propaganda machine of the Francoist dictatorship, this material also allows us to understand the commitment that links all creative work with its time. For this reason, in addition to the obvious evidence found in these images and the possibility of identifying with the scenes and the events they depict, our aim was to situate the spectator beyond the screen; at the point where the last decision was made before beginning to film; at the point before the Moviola pauses on a revealing frame, or before the reaction of an audience about to be dazzled by the lights of an improvised projection room; at the exact point where the chronicle of a view is written.

Introduction JOAN RAMON RESINA Over the last half century, visual stories have claimed an ever-larger share of the popular culture, as literature initiated its gradual descent to a quantitatively and qualitatively more restricted audience. During this time, fi lm has achieved technical sophistication and social prestige. It is now fi rmly established as an academic discipline in its own right, enjoying pride of place within the larger paradigm of Cultural Studies. But although Spanish fi lm is today the object of teaching and research in many departments, analytical resources are still scarce in English. The existence of a few histories of Spanish cinema (the best of which, John Hopewell’s Out of the Past, has long been out of print), of specialized work on a few privileged directors (Buñuel, Saura, and Almodóvar), and a handful of collections of essays (notably those edited by Peter William Evans and Barry Jordan) does not cover the interpretive needs of the English-speaking student of Spanish cinema, who is often at the mercy of reviews of scant exegetical value. The present volume is intended as a contribution to remedy this relative dearth by offering a set of original pieces on carefully selected directors and fi lms spanning the period from the origins of the New Spanish Cinema in the 1950s to the end of the twentieth century. It would be easy to draw attention to what is missing and to dispute the choices made. Every selection entails judgments of value and one chooses at one’s peril. But it is also true that books have a fate.

The film is a reflection on the deep dramaturgical relations between image and music, where music is not merely a subsidiary substratum of image, but a subject of parity. The starting point of the film is a predefined musical structure. The sound track is composed of music by Bach, in addition to two sonatas by Mendelssohn and an etude of Ligety, which create an architectural vault, under which the history of film unfurls: a passage through the XVIII, XIX and XXI centuries together with J.S.Bach.

I was literally freaked and said, “Who? Pere Portabella? Used to produce Bunuel films? Why haven’t I ever even heard of this guy? How could a rich and dazzling and sumptuous film such as this remain so utterly unknown in my country? The exquisite images, the superbly rendered music, the bravura style, this bold narrative, the great performances, the perfection of the totality of this unique and vibrant wonderland of a film --- How to get it seen in America?” The answer now, these few years later, is the intrepid and visionary tricksters at Shadow Distribution, to whom I am so deeply indebted for the work that they have put into making this American distribution a reality.

  • Catalan Cinema's Radical Years, 1968–1978
FILM Catalan Cinema’s Radical NEW YORK Years, 1968–1978 Thu, October 25– Sat, November 10, 2018 Venue Museum of Modern Art, 11 W 53rd St, New York, NY 10019 View map Credits Program descriptions are written by Esteve Riambau. All films courtesy of the Filmoteca de Catalunya. Organized by Esteve Riambau, director of Filmoteca de Catalunya, and Joshua Siegel, curator of the department of film at The Museum of Modern Art The film series traces 10 years of Catalan cinema and includes filmmakers such as Pere Portabella and Antoni Ribas. This series explores 10 revolutionary years in the history of Catalan cinema: the period between 1968 and 1978, when the fate of Spain –and Catalonia’s place in it– lay in the balance. The death of General Francisco Franco on November 20, 1975, and the ascension of Juan Carlos I to the throne made possible the nation’s transition from brutal dictatorship to fragile democracy. The Catalan language, after nearly a half-century of censorship, could once again be expressed freely in the streets and in the arts. Filmmakers who during the last years of dictatorship had risked their lives by shooting clandestinely or by encoding their scripts with politically subversive ideas responded to a newfound freedom after 1976 with work that continues to excite and provoke. The exhibition, drawn entirely from the archives of the Filmoteca de Catalunya, spans the decade from the radicalism of 1968 to the first democratic elections in 1977 and the writing of the Constitution of Spain the following year. It includes films by Pere Portabella, Antoni Ribas, and others that explore the legacy of the Spanish Civil War, the surge of immigrants into Barcelona and other cities in Catalonia from other parts of Spain, Catalan national identity, the clash of dissident movements, feminist and class struggle, and sexual liberation.

  • Universe Microfilms International
INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy.
