She and her family of nine siblings grew-up dancing the Southern Appalachian traditional dance form of clogging and through listening to old country and bluegrass music during their childhood. They learned how to recognize a consistent beat by listening to each other and watching the older groups. At the age of 16 she began clogging with a man named Ben Smathers (inducted into the America’s Clogging Hall of Fame in 1986), who was the director of the Stoney Mountain Cloggers.
