Climbing Wall Definitions 1.1 Type of Wall The MCofS recognises the need to develop the following types of climbing wall structure in Scotland. These can be combined together at a suitably sized site or developed as separate facilities (e.g. a dedicated bouldering venue). All walls should ideally be situated in a dedicated space or room so as not to clash with other sporting activities. They require unlimited access throughout the day / week (weekends and evenings till late are the most heavily used times). It is recommended that the type of wall design is specific to the requirements and that it is not possible to utilise one wall for all climbing disciplines (e.g. a lead wall cannot be used simultaneously for bouldering). For details of the design, development and management of walls the MCofS supports the recommendations in the “Climbing Walls Manual” (3rd Edition, 2008). 1.1.1. Bouldering walls General training walls with a duel function of allowing for the pursuit of physical excellence, as well as offering a relatively safe ‘solo’ climbing experience which is fun and perfect for a grass-roots introduction to climbing. There are two styles: indoor venues and outdoor venues to cater for the general public as a park or playground facility (Boulder Parks). Dedicated bouldering venues are particularly successful in urban areas* where local access to natural crags offering this style of climbing is not available. -

Please note that neither the institution nor the examiners are responsible − through the approval of this thesis − for the theories and methods used, or results and conclusions drawn in this work. 2 Abstract The main goal of this master thesis is to estimate the intrinsic value of one share in Oslo Klatresenter AS as of the 2nd of May 2021. The fundamental valuation technique of adjusted present value was selected as the preferred valuation method. In addition, a relative valuation was performed to supplement the primary fundamental valuation. This thesis found that the climbing gym market in Oslo is likely to enjoy a significant growth rate in the coming years, with a forecasted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in sales volume of 6,76% from 2019 to 2033. From there, the market growth rate is assumed to have reached a steady-state of 3,50%. The period, however, starts with a reduced market size in 2020 and an expected low growth rate from 2020 to 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on this and an assumed new competing climbing gym opening at the beginning of 2026, OKS AS revenue is forecasted to grow with a CAGR of 4,60% from 2019 to 2033. -

CBC Document – Mar 2020 The following information is intended as a handout for trainees and participants before commencing the activity. INFORMATION FOR ABSEIL TRAINEES AND CANYONING PARTICIPANTS Context Canyoning involves descending rock clefts such as waterfalls and gaps in rocks created by water. It often requires abseiling, swimming, liloing as well as rock hopping and scrambling abilities. Walking into and out of the canyon can also involve scrambling over rocks and rock climbing. Canyon participant requirements Attributes of participants for canyoning • Suitable balance evident by experience with rock hopping in creeks. • For vertical canyons, suitable abseil experience and skills. • For any canyon with deep water (more than 1.7m), the ability to tread water and swim for at least 50 metres wearing clothing and shoes. • Adequate fitness and agility to complete the trip. There is normally no going back after the first abseil requiring the group to commit to completing the trip. • Leaders and co-leaders to be advised (in confidence) of any medical condition that may affect abseiling, rock hopping or swimming. • Overnight bivies are rare in canyons, but they can happen. Recommend you have adequate mental and physical ability, as well as lightweight equipment to deal with such an event. Required equipment for Abseil training • A day pack with some snacks and water. • A helmet. A bike helmet is adequate for training. • Gloves. Any close-fitting protective gloves will do. Sailing gloves with just the tips of the forefinger and thumb exposed are ideal as they are designed for wet conditions, but leather riggers or close-fitting gardening gloves are OK. -

Analysis of the accident on Air Guitar The Safety Committee of the Swedish Climbing Association Draft 2004-05-30 Preface The Swedish Climbing Association (SKF) Safety Committee’s overall purpose is to reduce the number of incidents and accidents in connection to climbing and associated activities, as well as to increase and spread the knowledge of related risks. The fatal accident on the route Air Guitar involved four failed pieces of protection and two experienced climbers. Such unusual circumstances ring a warning bell, calling for an especially careful investigation. The Safety Committee asked the American Alpine Club to perform a preliminary investigation, which was financed by a company formerly owned by one of the climbers. Using the report from the preliminary investigation together with additional material, the Safety Committee has analyzed the accident. The details and results of the analysis are published in this report. There is a large amount of relevant material, and it is impossible to include all of it in this report. The Safety Committee has been forced to select what has been judged to be the most relevant material. Additionally, the remoteness of the accident site, and the difficulty of analyzing the equipment have complicated the analysis. The causes of the accident can never be “proven” with certainty. This report is not the final word on the accident, and the conclusions may need to be changed if new information appears. Having good equipment in the mountains increases safety and your comfort level and therefore your chance of having a successful climb. This lexicon represents years of in-field knowledge and experience by a multitude of guides, teachers and climbers. We have found that by being well-equipped on climbs and expeditions our climbers are able to succeed in conditions that force other teams back. No matter which trip you are considering you can trust the gear selection has been carefully thought out to every last detail. People new to the sport often find gear purchasing a daunting chore. We recommend you examine our suggested brands closely to assist in your purchasing decisions and consider renting gear whenever possible. CLIMB ANTARCTICA REQUIRED CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT LIST Conditions in Antarctica change drastically throughout our season and vary depending on your location. At Union Glacier, the climate is very dry and generally sunny but wind chill can impact temperatures greatly with early November being as cold as -22°F (-30°C). Average mid-season temperatures range from -12°F to 30°F (-24°C to -1°C). To be prepared for all conditions, it is important to have a selection of items you can mix and match. The layering system described below will keep you safe and comfortable in all conditions—it is also the same system utilized by our Antarctic field staff. You do not need to wear ALL of these layers ALL of the time. Dress for the weather conditions and the activity level you expect to encounter and bring extra layers with you in your backpack in case conditions change. Base Layer Materials Polyester, Merino Wool, or Silk but NO COTTON Examples Patagonia Capilene or Smartwool Description Your first layer consists of a lightweight or midweight long- sleeved thermal top and bottom. We recommend materials that wick moisture away from your body like polyester or merino wool. If you cannot wear artificial fibers or wool, silk is an alternate option. Cotton traps moisture and can cause you to chill more rapidly. Zip T-necks are a great option as they allow ventilation. Bring undergarments, sports bras, and/or camisoles in a similar wicking material. It must be light, remain effective when wet or iced, and dry easily. These notes will help you make informed choices, which will save you time and money. Bring the mandatory clothing and wet weather gear, and any equipment you already own that is on the equipment checklist. BODY WEAR There are numerous fabrics, which are both water resistant and breathable such as Gore-Tex, Event, Polartec Neoshell, Pertex Shield and Entrant etc. These fabrics are expensive but can last for years if well looked after. Shell clothing should be seam sealed during the manufacturing process (tape sealed on the seams) or it will leak through the stitching. It also should be easy to move in and easy to put on and take off, when wearing gloves or mitts. Shell clothing made of PVC or similar totally waterproof non-breathable material is not suitable as moisture cannot escape when you are exerting energy, resulting in getting wet from the inside out! Therefore fabric breathability is very important when you are active in the mountains. -

FREE PASSAGE Finding the path of least resistance means climbing the hardest big- wall free climb in the world By Tommy Caldwell Obsession is like an illness. At first you don't realize anything is happening. But then the pain grows in your gut, like something is shredding your insides. Suddenly, the only thing that matters is beating it. You’ll do whatever it takes; spend all of your time, money and energy trying to overcome. Over months, even years, the obsession eats away at you. Then one day you look in the mirror, see the sunken cheeks and protruding ribs, and realize the toll taken. My obsession is a 3,000-foot chunk of granite, El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. As a teenager, I was first lured to El Cap because I could drive my van right up to the base of North America’s grandest wall and start climbing. I grew up a clumsy kid with bad hand-eye coordination, yet here on El Cap I felt as though I had stumbled into a world where I thrived. Being up on those steep walls demanded the right amount of climbing skill, pain tolerance and sheer bull-headedness that came naturally to me. For the last decade El Cap has beaten the crap out of me, yet I return to scour its monstrous walls to find the tiniest holds that will just barely go free. So far I have dedicated a third of my life to free climbing these soaring cracks and razor-sharp crimpers. Getting to the top is no longer important. -

Karavshin Valley Ascents in the Karavshin Valley. Eight members of The North Face Climbing Team spent three and a half weeks between July 10 and August 6 in Kirghizstan climbing in a spectacular region of the Pamir Alai range com monly referred to as the Ak-Su. Knowledgeable Russian climbers informed us that the name “Ak-Su,” meaning “white water,” simply refers to various rivers and specific summits and that the area is correctly called the Karavshin region. The members of the team included Conrad Anker, Greg Child, Lynn Hill, Jay Smith, Kitty Calhoun-Grissom, Dan Osman, Chris Noble and me. Russian climbers first visited the Karavshin in 1987, holding competi tive climbing events on a number of the huge granite towers. Chasing rumors of excellent granite formations in a hospitable climate, Europeans began climbing there in the early 1990s, putting up a number of long difficult free climbs. I spoke with only one other American climber (Tom Hargis) who had firsthand knowledge of the area; Tom had made several trips to the region in the company of a group of Russian climbers from St. Petersburg. This very active group has been primarily responsible for many of the more recent and harder climbs and consequently they provide the most current information on what has and has not been climbed. Unfortunately, this infor mation has not been written down and must be gathered from the notes and recollections of numerous individuals. As a result, a complete record of climbs in the area is difficult to compile. Armed with only sketchy informa tion ferreted from various French journals combined with a few references appearing in American and British magazines, we arrived to discover that nearly all of the major peaks and faces had routes established on them already. -

A LOOK INTO THE EXPERIENCES OF ICE CLIMBERS WHO HAVE FALLEN ON ICE SCREWS Kel Rossiter Ed.D., Educational Leadership & Policy Studies--M.S., Kinesiology/Outdoor Education AMGA Certified Rock & Alpine Guide INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Last winter a climber with Adventure Spirit Rock+Ice+Alpine was asking me about the holding power of ice screws. We discussed the various lab studies that have been done (a list of links to some interesting ones can be found at the bottom of this paper) then he said, “That's great, but has anyone ever specifically done research into how they actually perform in the field?” He had a point. While the dictum in ice climbing is that “the leader never falls,” in the end, they sometimes do. So presumably there was an ample population from which to sample— but I was unaware of any actual field research done with this population. So, fueled by that question, I decided to explore the topic. The results of this inquiry appear below. Though I have a background in research, make no mistake: This presentation of findings should not be viewed through the same lens as academic research. Aside from running it by a few academic-climber friends there has been only an informal peer review, there are significant short-comings in the methodology (noted below), and ideas are put forth that don't necessarily build directly on prior research (largely because—as noted—there really hasn't been much research on the topic and much less field research). In addition, this write up is not done in the typical “5 Part” research format of Introduction, Methodology, Results, Analysis, and Conclusion.
