Video graphics work by Studio Ouroboros, Berlin. ZONE A: Religion/Family This section of the exhibition features a key work expanding on Ron Athey’s family and religious upbringing as a would-be Pentacostal minister: his 2002 live multimedia performance installation Joyce, which is named after Athey’s mother. It also includes elements from Athey’s archive relating to Joyce—including two costumes from the live performance—and his life within and beyond his fundamentalist origin family (such as unpublished writings from his period of recovery in the 1980s, and the numerous flyers advertising fundamentalist revivals he attended). The section is organized around materials that evoke the mix of religiosity and dysfunctional (sexualized and incestuous) family dynamics Athey experienced as a child and wrote about in some of his autobiographical writings that are included in the catalogue, including Mary Magdalene Footwashing Set (1996), which was included in a group show at Western Project in Los Angeles in 2006 and in the Invisible Exports Gallery “Displaced Person” show in 2012, a former gallery just around the corner from Participant Inc.’s location.

  • Piercings and Passports Exploring the Social Mobility of Adelaide’S Metalcore ‘Scene Kids’
Piercings and passports Exploring the social mobility of Adelaide’s metalcore ‘scene kids’ As young people continue to confront transition issues such as school-to-work pathways, they are concomitantly developing their own social and cultural priorities and responding to them in new and innovative ways. This process warrants a greater focus on young people’s identity work as they navigate their transitions through increasingly fluid social and cultural environments. Drawing on her current PhD research, Paula Rowe focuses attention on Adelaide’s ‘scene kids’, a community of interest based on a subgenre of heavy metal music. She utlises Bauman’s (2000) liquid modernity thesis to parallel the social dynamics of ‘liquid’ metal subgenres with those of the ‘liquid’ modern world. Exploring the social processes of scene kids highlights ways in which socioeconomic circumstances can affect young people’s level of engagement with lifestyle options. This in turn raises questions as to how “scene kid identities” might impact on other life pursuits and social transitions. by Paula Rowe outh transitions have dominated the youth research agenda for several decades, with a continuing focus on structural processes and institutional arrangements that Y shape and constrain young people’s holistic development, particularly in geographic locations characterised by conditions of social and economic disadvantage (Heath et al. 2009). More recently, there has been increasing interest in the ways in which young people’s identity work intersects and influences various social transitions within school, domestic and broader social contexts, and vice versa (Stokes & Wyn 2009). Despite the known social, economic and psychological constraints of marginalisation, young people still manage to find a space in which to express their identity and live a “life of one’s own”, yet not enough is known about the ways in which young people use cultural affiliations and lifestyle choices to express their identity and demonstrate personal agency in their social worlds (Miles 2000; Shildrick 2006).

This course falls into social analysis and visual and performance arts analysis and practice because it shows how punk, as a subculture, has influenced alternative economic practices, led to political mobilization, and challenged social norms. This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. Students learn to analyze punk subculture as an alternative social formation and how punk productions confront and are times co-opted by capitalistic logic and normative economic, political and social arrangements. 3. • Strapping Young Lad
THE DAYGLO’S AUSSIE TOUR #3 APRIL/MAY 2005 - ABSOLUTELY FREE PUNK, HARDCORE & METAL - THE SCUM ALSO RISES STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and shitloads more! ABSOLUTE EDITORIAL Absolute Editorial #3 Things are coming together nicely for us here at Absolute Underground. This is starting go be fun! We’re getting into a few free shows and people are starting to send in CD’s for us to review. We’ve got a lot of new people pitching in to make this rag better than ever. Emily Kendy joins us from Vancouver and brings with her a very impressive resume (The Nerve, Discorder, Terminal City, Exclaim...). We’ll be featuring a different Vancouver based band each issue starting with scum punks the Excessives. With the new Arena and Rod Stewart having played Victoria, you can just feel that this is going to be a great year for live music around town. I’m always impressed with the turnout and energy of the younger crowds at the all-ages shows. Even if you’re old you should go check one out sometime. You might find it invigorating to jump in a circle pit of mohawked fury. It was great hanging out with the crew at Spitfire Tattoo special thanks to Rick and Amanda. Electric Frankenstein was an amazing show and just proves that Victoria gets wicked shows all the time. A big middle finger to the asshole bouncers @ Diego’s who wouldn’t let me in even though I was on the guest list and then proceeded to tell the headlining act CHOKE to “pack their shit, they weren’t going to play.” This was after two huge idiots working the door beat up CHOKE’s drummer who weighs about a buck ten soaking wet.

  • Parabstruse Interview
Parabstruse Interview Editor’s note: This interview was originally published on Sadness By Name back in January of 2010 as “Interview with Garry Brents of Parabstruse”. Garry Brents has been a close collaborator for many years and it was an absolute delight doing this interview with him three and a half years ago. Perhaps we will do a follow up to this interview in the future! -Hey Garry. Will you quickly introduce yourself, and mention your musical background to begin with? The bands you’ve been in, including collaborations. Hello, first of all I would like to thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed. My musical background started when I was at the age of 7. I started playing piano for a few years. I didn’t enjoy it at first, but I grew to like it. I’d always try to make up something instead of learn how to play other songs. A few years later, I learned how to play the trumpet but only played for 2 years. I wish I still knew how to play. When I got into High School is the time I started thinking about writing my own music. I took bass guitar lessons for 2 years, but continued to teach myself and learn more on my own. So I’ve been playing that instrument the longest for about 9 years now. I self-taught myself guitar based on some of the knowledge from bass lessons and just feeling it out, maybe 6 years ago. The list of bands that I’ve been in (serious or not) are the following in chronological order: Ghastrah Proxiima, Garrsinn, From a Residence of Stars & Gnosis (changed to smoosz in ’08), Lunarian Sea, Darkphone, Semen Across Lips, Synthetic Onslaught, Sugar Highlands, Parabstruse, Cara Neir, They Mostly Come Out At Night, bunrage, Writhe.

During the 1960s, British hard rock bands and the American guitarist Jimi Hendrix developed a more distorted guitar sound and heavier drums and bass that led to a separation of heavy metal from other blues-based rock. Albums by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in 1970 codified the new genre, which was marked by distorted guitar ‘power chords’, heavy riffs, wailing vocals and virtuosic solos by guitarists and drummers.
