THE LEGISLATURE OF 1861. On the last day of December, 1860, the twenty-first General Assem- bly of Missouri met at Jefferson City. The retiring Governor, " Bob " M. Stewart, delivered a very conservative message, taking the middle ground between secession and abolitionism, and pleading strenuously for peace and moderation. He declared, among other things, that the people of Missouri " ought not to be frightened from their propriety by the past unfriendly legislation of the North, nor dragooned into secession by the restrictive legislation of the extreme South." He concluded with a thrilling appeal for the maintenance of the Union, depicting the inevitable result of secession, revolution and war. Saeger Northwest Missouri State University THESIS APPROVED Thesis Advisor Date Dean of Graduate School Date Kingdom of Callaway 2 Abstract During the American Civil War, Callaway County, Missouri had strong sympathies for the Confederate States of America. As a rebellious region, Union forces occupied the county for much of the war, so local secessionists either stayed silent or faced arrest. After a tense, nonviolent interaction between a Federal regiment and a group of armed citizens from Callaway, a story grew about a Kingdom of Callaway. The legend of the Kingdom of Callaway is merely one characteristic of the curious history that makes Callaway County during the Civil War an intriguing study. Kingdom of Callaway 3 Introduction When Missouri chose not to secede from the United States at the beginning of the American Civil War, Callaway County chose its own path. The local Callawegians seceded from the state of Missouri and fashioned themselves into an independent nation they called the Kingdom of Callaway. Or so goes the popular legend. This makes a fascinating story, but Callaway County never seceded and never tried to form a sovereign kingdom. Although it is not as fantastic as some stories, the Civil War experience of Callaway County is a remarkable microcosm in the story of a sharply divided border state. -

Baugh The Elders’ Journal of July 1838, published in Far West, Missouri, includ- ed a series of twenty questions related to Mormonism. The answers to the questions bear the editorial pen of Joseph Smith. Question number sixteen posed the following query: “If the Mormon doctrine is true, what has become of all those who have died since the days of the apostles?” The Prophet answered, “All those who have not had an opportunity of hearing the gospel, and being administered to by an inspired man in the flesh, must have it hereafter before they can be finally judged.”1 The Prophet’s thought is clear—the dead must have someone in mortality administer the saving ordinances for them to be saved in the kingdom of God. Significantly, the answer given by the Prophet marks his first known statement concerning the doctrine of vicari- ous work for the dead. However, it was not until more than two years later that the principle was put into practice.2 On 15 August 1840, Joseph Smith preached the funeral sermon of Seymour Brunson during which time he declared for the first time the doc- trine of baptism for the dead.3 Unfortunately, there are no contemporary accounts of the Prophet’s discourse. However, Simon Baker was present at the funeral services and later stated that during the meeting the Prophet read extensively from 1 Corinthians 15, then noted a particular widow in the congregation whose son had died without baptism. -

Reality: This is cultural, not doctrinal. Myth #2: She exists, but we know nothing else about her Reality: Leaders of our church have spoken about her roles since the days of Joseph Smith. Myth #3: Our silence protects her against being blasphemed and slandered as the Father and Son are. Reality: evidence from David Paulsen’s article makes it clear: there is no authorized mandate of silence from church leaders. Family Proclamation: “Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents” In 1909, the First Presidency of the Church wrote: “All men and women are in the similitude of the universal Father and Mother and are literally the sons and daughters of Deity.” Paulsen, 73. He served as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; mayor of Nauvoo, one of the largest cities in Illinois; lieutenant-general of the Nauvoo Legion; and in 1844 he was a candidate for President of the United States. What set Joseph Smith apart from other dynamic leaders was the source of his teachings: the God of Heaven. "The best way to obtain truth 1 and wisdom," he taught, "is not to ask it from books, but to go to God in prayer, and obtain divine teaching." 2 Joseph led with love. He recognized the worth of every soul as a child of God. When asked why so many followed him, he replied: "It is because I possess the principle of love. All I can offer the world is a good heart and a good hand." 3 The Prophet refused to place himself above others. Rather, as he humbly said, "I love to wait upon the Saints, and be a servant to all, hoping that I may be exalted in the due time of the Lord." 4 Bereft of pride, 5 Joseph personified the Lord's counsel: "Whosoever will be great among you, . shall be servant of all." 6 Joseph Smith Quotes Nothing is so much calculated to lead people to forsake sin as to take them by the hand, and watch over them with tenderness. -

Snuffer, Jr. © 2014, All Rights Reserved ________________________________________________ There are four topics discussed in this paper. They are plural wives, ordination of black African men, pressure to ordain women, and same sex marriage. The history of changing LDS doctrine, past, present and the likely future, are illustrated using these four subjects to show doctrinal changes required to build a necessary bridge between LDS Mormonism1 and the American public. Religion moves through two stages. In the first, God reveals Himself to man. This is called “restoration.” It restores man to communion with God as in the Garden of Eden. In the second, man attempts to worship God according to His latest visit. This stage is always characterized by scarcity2 and inadequacy. This is called “apostasy.” Apostasy always follows restoration. Abraham, Moses and Isaiah ascended the bridge into God’s presence.3 God descended the Celestial bridge to live with man through Jesus Christ. They all show God wants to reconnect with us. Unfortunately, the witnesses of a restoration leave only an echo of God’s voice. Unless we remain with God through continual restoration, we lapse back into scarcity and apostasy. Whether the echo is preserved through a family organization, like ancient Israel, or 1 I refer to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as “LDS Mormonism” or “the LDS Church.” It is the most successful of the offshoots claiming Joseph Smith as a founder. AR TICLES AND ESSAYS Speaking in Tongues in the Restoration Churches Lee Copeland "WE BELIEVE IN THE GIFT OF TONGUES, prophecy, revelation, visions, heal- ing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth" (Seventh Article of Faith). While over five million people in the United States today speak in tongues (Noll 1983, 336), very few, if any, are Latter-day Saints. How- ever, during the mid-1800s, speaking in tongues was so commonplace in the LDS and RLDS churches that a person who had not spoken in tongues, or who had not heard others do so, was a rarity. Journals and life histories of that period are filled with instances of the exercise of this gift of the Spirit. In today's Church, the practice is almost totally unknown. This article summarizes the various views of tongues today, clarifies the origin of tongues within the restored Church, and details its rise and fall in the LDS and RLDS faiths. There are two general categories of speaking in tongues: glos- solalia, speaking in an unknown language, usually thought to be of heavenly, not human, origin; and xenoglossia, miraculously speaking in an ordinary human language unknown to the speaker. When no dis- tinction is made between these two types of speech, both types are collectively referred to as glossolalia. On the day of Pentecost, Christ's apostles were gathered together. "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were con- founded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language" (Acts 2:4, 6). -
