Under 11’s Merimbula Diggers, Tathra Sea Eagles in battle for grand final berth

THE Sea Eagles will be in the hunt for a grand final berth when they meet the Merimbula Diggers on Saturday.

The Diggers drew level with the two-year undefeated Pambula Panthers last weekend and will pose a huge challenge.

However, no matter the outcome, the Tathra skipper is delighted with his team’s effort this year and the chance to play more finals football. “We were rapt to get the win last weekend and we’re looking forward to the challenge and playing more finals footy,” Luke Taylor said. “No matter what happens, we’ve achieved a fair bit this year, but hopefully we can get the job done. “If we play like we did on Saturday we feel like we have every chance.”

The side will certainly be an underdog going against the Diggers, but Taylor said not many would have put faith in Merimbula to match the Panthers last week. “We’ve got the belief in ourselves internally, it’s just really important that the town and community gets behind the boys,” he said.

With community spirit in mind, the club hosted a very relaxed final training session last night with supporters wel- comed along to a taco dinner.

Excitement is building around the club, too with numbers at training at an all-time high. “After the mid-season talk, the intensity is right up,” Taylor said. “We still want to have fun and enjoy ourselves, but everyone has committed and you make sure you don’t leave any stone unturned. “Lots of people don’t get the chance to play finals football.”

He said the team’s position was up in the air until a few weeks ago, so the past month has been like playing in the fi- nals; every match could be your last.

“Any finals game, you go in with that mindset, you really don’t flirt with form or leave anything on the park,” Taylor said. “We’ve been playing like that for about a month, but the next step is getting into a grand final so it’s massive.”

Last weekend it was a handful of club veterans stepping up in a big way to get Tathra clear of Bega.

Against Merimbula, Taylor is hoping for a similar show, but said he would be happy as long as everyone gave their best.

“In these big games, it’s your first preference to have the veterans stand up,” he said. “But we don’t expect miracles of anyone, we just want them to play their role. “If the veterans can have a bit of an impact that drags some of the young guys through.”

The club is urging sponsors, past players and supporters to get along to the Berrambool Oval, Merimbula, on Saturday to cheer on the guys in the hunt for a grand final spot.

“It’s a bit of an advantage for them being a home ground, but we love the room to move and we’re excited to be play- ing finals footy again,” Taylor said.

JUNIOR LIONS & BREAKERS STAR AT AWARDS NIGHT

On Wednesday night the Narooma Lions and Bermagui Breakers showed that their futures are bright within the Sapphire Coast AFL as they had an extremely successful night at the league presentation night at the Merimbula RSL.

The two clubs had multiple award winners on the night with Rocco Lagana (46 Goals) and Campbell Moresi (15 Goals) from the Bermagui Breakers taking out the under 13 and under 11 goal kicking awards respectively. Bermagui’s Jayden Scott was awarded best boundary um- pire for the Sapphire Coast AFL Umpires Asso- ciation whilst Kylie Scott was awarded the vol- unteer of the year award for her hard work around the club. The Bermagui Breakers who have had a fine season on the field in the under 13’s and under 11’s will go into this weekends matchup’s against Merimbula and Broulee/ Moruya quietly confident as they look to progress to next week- end’s grand final.

The Narooma Lions were dominant in the junior grades in 2015 claiming all three best and fairest awards on the night. In the under 11’s Kurtis Carlson was awarded joint best and fairest for 2015 whilst Matthew Parker was runner up in the under 11’s. In the under 13’s Thomas Hodge won a dramatic vote count by three votes after he led his team to the finals in 2015 after going winless in 2014.

The Narooma under 16’s side has been dominant in 2015 having claimed the minor premiership, claiming a wain in the second semi final to progress straight to the grand final whilst also doing it undefeated. To cap off a great season the Lions took out all under 16’s awards with Zak Wilson coming runner up in the grade after claiming the best and fairest in 2014. Wilson’s teammate Jai Reed capped off a stellar season personally and for the 16’s side claiming both the under 16’s leading goal kicker with 56 goals whilst also claiming the under 16’s best and fairest after running away with the vote count early in proceedings. After being involved with the NSW state school boy’s team in Geelong the future looks bright for Jai Reed.

After such a successful night for the Narooma Lions and Bermagui Breakers the future for both clubs looks extremely bright with football operations coordinator Jarrod Moore crediting the clubs for a great year “Both clubs have put a lot of effort into their junior development programs over the course of this year and past years which has been reflected in their results in the junior grades this season as well as their great results in school competitions such as the Paul Kelly Cup.

Round Preview Merimbula v Tathra In the match of the season last weekend it will be interesting to see how the Diggers respond to last weekends extra time loss against the Panthers where all players were battered and bruised from the contest. In contrast the Sea Eagles had a relatively easy time against the Bega Bombers with a sixty point loss. With Berrambool set to be dry and the sun out, the conditions will suit the Diggers who will be looking to utilise their run and carry against Tathra who will be looking to shut down Merimbula’s talented midfield unit including Jack and Thomas Burch and Adam Daley. Predicted Winner: Merimbula. Player to Watch– Adam Daley. Runner up in this years best & fairest, Daley will look to continue his hot form this weekend. Development Pambula v Bermagui Bermagui have concluded the season on fire with three wins on the trot against Merimbula and Tathra twice. With the side going into the preliminary final without playing due to a forfeit in the semi final against the Diggers. Last weekend the Whalers showed the Pan- thers that they have a way to go in order to knock them off if they are to make it to the grand final next weekend. The three top teams have made it into this seasons preliminary final and this matchup is shaping up to be a cracking match. Predicted Winner: Bermagui. Under 16’s Pambula v Merimbula What will be the impact of last weekend’s matches where Pambula were thumped by reigning premiers Narooma whilst Merimbula defeated Bega in a narrow contest against a highly competitive Bega Bombers side. Pambula will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s loss against the Lions as they look to notch another win against the Diggers having won against the Merimbula outfit in their past three meetings. With a number of U16’s players from the Panthers gaining senior experience this season including Billy Bamford and Tom Ferguson and they will be looking for these boys to step up and ensure that the club gains four teams into next weekends grand final. In their losses against the Panthers the Diggers have been extremely competitive and will look to keep this con- test close. Predicted Winners: Pambula. Player to Watch– Billy Stubbs. After having an exceptional representative carnival, Billy has grown into a solid footballer and had an exceptional back end to the season. Under 13’s Merimbula v Bermagui In another heart stopper between the Diggers and Panthers , Doug Martyn’s boys will be looking to bounce back from last weekends defeat against Bermagui this weekend. The Diggers want to reverse their fortunes from 2014 and it is evident in their approach to this weekends game with star player Jed Martyn choosing to forgo state athletics this weekend to line up against the Breakers. Bermagui will be feeling quietly confident going into this weekends fixture having accounted for Narooma in last weekends first semi final. This match is shaping up to be a sensational preliminary final with key player like Martyn, Jack Howker, Jonty Dwyer, Rocco Lagana and Chris Olsen to be shut down to ensure a win. This is the match of the weekend! Predicted Winners: Merimbula. Jack Howker– Sometimes the forgotten man for the Diggers, Howker brings a toughness and to the Diggers winning hard balls and putting his body on the line. Although he does not possess great size his determination more than makes up for that. Under 11’s BM Giants v Bermagui Bermagui caused the upset of the round last weekend when they easily accounted for the Narooma Lions in their first semi final. The Breakers showed the confidence that we saw in small pieces throughout the season with the notation that anything can happen in finals football. With leading goal kicker Campbell Moresi leading the charge as well as club best and fairest Tye Oliver the Giants may find this weekends going tough. After a tough loss last weekend against the Panthers who progressed straight into the grand final the Giants will be looking to recapture their early season form that saw the club almost unbeatable in the early rounds of the season. Predicted Winners: Bermagui. Player to Watch– Oliver Dolphin. With a host of young players Oliver leads the way for the Giants with his skill and determination for the ball.
