In support of Bluestocking Week and the NTEU ‘Defend Our Universities’ higher education campaign, NTEU Newcastle Branch and NUPSA are holding a joint staff and student free film screening of the 2014 documentary IVORY TOWER. IVORY TOWER gives Australia the chance to see what damage US-style deregulation will do to our higher education system. From the halls of Harvard, to public colleges in financial crisis, to Silicon Valley, filmmaker Andrew Rossi assembles an urgent portrait of a great American institution at the breaking point. In the US the cost of higher education has increased astronomically and has resulted in a burgeoning $1.2 trillion student debt crisis. IVORY TOWER examines the flaws and inequality that come with the corporatisation of the US higher education system and highlights the threats to quality and the value of university education. Christopher Pyne has lauded the American higher education model and said “We have much to learn about universities competing for students and focusing on our students,” and “Not least, we have much to learn about this from our friends in the United States.” Filmmaker Bio: Andrew Rossi returns to the Sundance Film Festival following his last film, Page One: Inside the New York Times, about the crisis in the newspaper industry. Distributed by Participant Media and Magnolia Pictures, Page One was nominated for two news and documentary Emmy Awards as well as receiving various critics' awards. Rossi is also the director of Le Cirque: A Table in Heaven, which screened on HBO, and was an associate producer on Jehane Noujaim's Control Room. • Kate Novack Is an Emmy-Nominated Director and Producer of Documentary Films
Kate Novack is an Emmy-nominated director and producer of documentary films. Her most recent film, Hysterical Girl, revisits the only major case history that Sigmund Freud produced of a female patient, and considers the corrosive legacy of his theory of hysteria, 125 years later. Hysterical Girl was shortlisted for an Academy Award and nominated for Best Short by the International Documentary Association. New Yorker critic Richard Brody described it as "extraordinary...a feature’s worth of ideas, emotions, allusions, references, and associations condensed into a mere thirteen minutes." Following its selection as a world premiere by SXSW in 2020, the film was acquired by The New York Times’ Op-Docs, the short film arm of the paper’s opinion page, and Grasshopper Film. Kate’s film The Gospel According to Andre (Magnolia Pictures, 2018), was named one of the top ten Queer films of the year by Indiewire and nominated for best LGBTQ documentary of the year by the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics. An intimate portrait of the legendary fashion editor Andre Leon Talley, Gospel traces Andre’s formative years growing up in the Black Church in the American South in the era of Jim Crow and his experience over four decades working in the predominantly white fashion industry. The New York Times called the film as “a cinematic ride” and Variety dubbed it “a deeply loving, frequently beautiful testament to the former Vogue editor who rose from humble beginnings in North Carolina to become arguably the high fashion world’s first major African-American tastemaker.” Following its premiere in competition at the Toronto Film Festival, Gospel screened at festivals and universities around the world, winning Best Documentary at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival and Best Feature Length Fashion Film at the Canadian International Fashion Film Festival in Calgary.

  • HYSTERICAL GIRL Press Notes Revised
Rossvack Productions & Abstract Productions Present HYSTERICAL GIRL A film by Kate Novack 13 minutes Official Selection 2020 SXSW Film Festival - World Premiere (slated) PRESS NOTES SYNOPSIS Sigmund Freud produced only one major case history of a female patient. “Hysterical Girl” uses a feminist lens to imagine Dora, the name Freud used at the turn of the 20th century to protect his subject’s identity, as a girl today. In the film, she tells her version of events, alongside Freud’s own words. What emerges is a portrait of the corrosive grip that a seemingly archaic theory from the Victorian era still has over thinking and policy around women, sex and consent, even in the era of #MeToo. “Dora” — whose real name was Ida Bauer — was 17 when her parents brought her to therapy after she accused a family friend of sexual assault. “Please,” Dora’s father asked Freud, “bring her to reason.” During the 11-week treatment, Freud chipped away at the case like a detective of the unconscious: why would you keep seeing the man you say assaulted you? Are you out for revenge? Did you send out signals? Did you secretly want it? A century later, the questions that women face haven’t changed much. “Hysterical Girl” intercuts several decades of archival material — from the cinema of John Hughes and Roman Polanski to the Congressional testimonies of Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford — to tease out the ways in which Freud’s theory of hysteria persists into the present day. ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS Kate Novack (Director, Producer, Screenplay) Kate Novack is an Emmy-nominated producer and director of documentary films.

  • About Filmmaker Andrew Rossi Andrew
About Filmmaker Andrew Rossi Andrew Rossi is the Emmy-nominated director and producer of documentary films including Page One: Inside The New York Times (2011), following the inner working of the New York Times media desk; Ivory Tower (2014), about the challenges facing higher education; A Table In Heaven (2008), following the Italian family behind Le Cirque restaurant; Bronx Gothic (2017) about performance artist Okwui Okpokwasili; and The First Monday In May (2016) about the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Andrew has been nominated for three Emmy awards, including two for Page One, which was one of the highest grossing theatrical documentaries of 2011. Premiering in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, Page One looks at the crisis in the newspaper industry to understand how competition from online media and the decline in print advertising is leading to a contraction in traditional journalism. As Hendrik Hertzberg wrote in the New Yorker, “Page One is surprisingly moving, and not a little chilling, because of the way it shows the Times’ reporters and editors bravely upholding their noble craft against an ominous backdrop of business-side global warming.” Ivory Tower was nominated for an Emmy for Best Business and Financial reporting following its broadcast on CNN. Although clearly a polemic about the perils of student debt and the rising cost of college, Ivory Tower is not a one-dimensional look at higher education. Instead, the film celebrates the core promise of college as a path to social mobility and the middle class. Co-distributed by Participant Media (An Inconvenient Truth, Spotlight), Ivory Tower was ranked as one of the best documentaries of 2014 by Indiewire and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
