The monstrous transformation of the self: translating Japanese cyberpunk and the posthuman into the living world Orion Mavridou Mavridou, O. 2015. The monstrous transformation of the self: translating Japanese cyberpunk and the posthuman into the living world. The Luminary. 6(Summer 2015): pp.72-86. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial- NoDerivs 2.0 UK: England & Wales License. The Monstrous Transformation of the Self: Translating Japanese Cyberpunk and the Posthuman into the Living World Orion Mavridou This essay offers an extended, tangential reading of the cyberpunk videogame, Final Fantasy VII. I will examine itsliterary and visual motifs, patterns and codes, putting these in dialogue with a participant study on cosplay and transformative fandom related to the game. The central philosophical questions that permeate the game will be examined in relation to one of the game’s characters, Vincent Valentine. I will then outline the processes involved in reproducing and embodying this character in the context of cosplay. The essay is structured to partially mimic a line of thought commonly observed within creative fandom, where the dissection of the media text serves to inform artistic practice. The textual analysis ofFinal Fantasy’s VII’s mythos, plot and Vincent Valentine’s character represent an integral part of the process involved in the conception, creation and construction of my cosplay performance. Both the game and the character were chosen on the merit of their relevance to the cyberpunk genre and the cosplay community, as well as their narrative and artistic potential. At the time of its release, in 1997, Final Fantasy VII presented gamers with a unique entry point into the insular realms of both East Asian RPGs and Japanese cyberpunk.

ABSTRACT POLITICAL SCIENCE FULLER, FRANK R. B.A. OGLETHORPE U1JIVERSITY, 2000 M.S. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2001 THE ATOMIC BOMB: REFLECTIONS IN JAPANESE MANGA AND ANIME Committee Chair: Robert B. DeJanes, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines post-World War II “anime” and manga based on the bomb’s after-effects and changes in Japanese mindsets resulting from the War, especially as inspired by Osamu Tezuka and later artists influenced by his works. This study theorized that Japanese political culture elements, through particular plotlines, could be traced in manga and anime themes carrying hidden messages repeatedly referencing the bomb’s effects on Japan, citing Tezuka’s influence, in the 1945-65 and 1985-95 periods, in the post-apocalyptic, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Case studies were used to qualitatively assess data for historical evidence of Tezuka’s influence across specific genres, from scholarly studies and reviews of manga. comics, and related media. Evidence ofTezuka-inspired themes, such as hope out of endless devastation (the phoenix analogy) and man’s destructive obsession with technology by conquering nature (dependent variables), were analyzed from a comparativist, historical viewpoint, as influenced by atomic bomb-related themes. The researcher explains the Japanese fascination with technology and why many anime show status quo disagreements. Japan absorbed trauma from the bomb, was invaded by foreigners, and faced a complete overhaul. Post-war, the economy grew rapidly, but Japan must reduce rigidity and social conformity. The Japanese are aware of the US role in their dual defense arrangement; Japan felt discomfort as a junior-partner in the 1950s-60s.

Beyond Neuromantics and Mirrorshades: Cyberpunk and Its Global Implications Blake Butschek HMN 679HB Special Honors for the Humanities Program The College of Liberal Arts The University of Texas at Austin May 2020 ________________________________________ Dr. Thomas J. Garza Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies Supervising Professor ________________________________________ Dr. Elizabeth M. Richmond-Garza Department of English Second Reader Butschek 1 Beyond Neuromantics and Mirrorshades: Cyberpunk and Its Global Implications Blake Anthony Butschek, B.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2020 Supervisor: Thomas J. Garza Abstract This independent research seeks to analyze the socio-political elements surrounding the formation and aspects of cyberpunk, drawing parallels between the twentieth-century fiction and the twenty-first-century reality. Cyberpunk refers to the science fiction subgenre encompassing a high tech, low life world which fuses advanced technologies with a dark, broken near-future dystopia. The genre initially sought to move beyond the utopian, idealistic science fiction of the early to the mid-twentieth century into a more realistic depiction of what technological developments and socio-political realities of the time would lead to in the near future. The three sections of this research allow for an in-depth analysis of what brought forth the creation of the genre, what defines its works and texts, and how the genre’s commentaries apply to society and culture at large. First, a foundational analysis exploring the influencing factors on the early visionaries of the genre will contextualize the origins of this ideology. Then, the exploration of two seminal texts of cyberpunk, Ridley Scott's 1982 Blade Runner and Butschek 2 Mamoru Oshii's 1995 Ghost in the Shell, through a close textual reading will illuminate commentary from their creators on their perceptions of the world at that time and in a possible future.

  • Cuerpos, Cyborgs E Inteligencia Artificial En Los Anime Japoneses
Abstract One of the most fascinating aspects of Japanese anime is the ease with which they confront us with the issue of technology, especially in the image of the cyborgs. However, we wonder what do cyborgs in Japanese anime relate to the lives of people who watch the stories we are told. Posed as the gap between humans and cybernetics, cyborgs lead us to three important questions about our own humanity: a) the topic of existence, b) the issue of feelings, and c) what do we mean by body.
