Educator Practices for STEM Education | Grades 6-12 1 Welcome Welcome to the student and educator practices support document for 6-12 STEM. The purpose of this document is to demonstrate the transdisciplinary nature of STEM, and to provide support for each of the sets of standards and practices that can be covered through transdisciplinary STEM education. For example, it is clear that both science and math standards are easily covered by a STEM activity, but during this course of this STEM activity, students can also demonstrate engineering practices, as well as an understanding of the Technology and Computer Science standards, all while demonstrating the social and emotional development contained within the WV Standards for Student Success. All of these standards, when combined, lead to a lesson, activity, or unit being classified as STEMminded, as students both learn content and develop the soft skills for student success while completing the STEM investigation. This document contains information about STEM in WV, as well as an explanation of the STEM Mindsets and Skillsets that are developed as a student becomes STEM minded. Information about the standards and practices of science, technology, engineering, and math are included, as well as guidance on making the STEM classroom inclusive for all students. Design thinking, as a method for problem solving presented, as well as the links between the WV Standards for Effective Schools and transdisciplinary STEM integration are described. This document contains information on STEM careers, and provides links for student investigation of STEM careers. Lastly, a STEM glossary is included so that as the STEM-minded WV initiative moves forward, a glossary provides a common language. This document is designed for educators that are looking to transform their teaching in order to develop STEM-minded students. This guide can serve as a tool for Professional Learning Communities, departments, or individual educator professional
