Antoine Fuqua Honoree, Voice of Los Angeles

Filmmaker Antoine Fuqua’s concern for and commitment to the Heart of Los Angeles Filmography Highlights neighborhood was ignited during his work on the Academy Award-winning filmTraining What’s My Name: Day (2001), the completion of which was catalyzed by the Rampart Scandal of the late American Dream/American Knightmare 90s. The film was shot in many of the areas where HOLA youth were--and are--living, and The Equalizer (Parts 1 and 2) was released in the same year that HOLA moved to its current home in and around Lafay- ette Park. It was a time that the Rampart District was in great need of love and care, and Southpaw HOLA is deeply grateful to have Antoine join us in celebrating how much has been accom- Olympus plished to build community since that time. Brooklyn’s Finest Shooter Throughout his career, Antoine’s work has exposed the complexities of pursuing justice in King Arthur an imperfect world, and in both feature films and music videos he has elevated the voice of Lightning in a Bottle diverse characters and artists who push the boundaries of who society accepts as leaders of change. Bait It is thus immensely meaningful to have Antoine inspire HOLA’s next generation with his acceptance of our Voice of Los Angeles award, and we look forward to celebrating with him on June 11. Dana + Thomas Riccard Honoree, Heroes of the Heart

Many years before they knew anything about HOLA, both Tom and Dana had a relationship with the Westlake neighborhood. Dana’s first professional job, at the California Association of Realtors, was two blocks from HOLA. Tom was born at Good Samaritan Hospital, and he spent many weekends working at his dad’s apartment building located just east of HOLA. Perhaps then, it was fate that brought Dana and Tom back to the neighborhood as HOLA volunteers and supporters.

For over 15 years, HOLA has been part of Dana and Tom’s lives. Initially, Dana volunteered weekly in the newly formed Smart Start tutor- ing program for elementary students. Impressed with HOLA’s holistic approach to programming for underserved youth, Dana encouraged Tom to become involved with HOLA. Together, they served as mentors for more than a dozen high school seniors applying to college. Over the years, they were proud to see their students matriculate to universities and colleges all across the . Tom solidified his commitment to HOLA by joining the Board of Directors and serves as a member of the finance and executive committee.

The Riccards have demonstrated their support for HOLA by funding numerous initiatives such as: a summer swim program for HOLA stu- dents, creation of an art studio in a former storefront bar, and sound proofing of classrooms for the YOLA music program. Most recently, the Riccards provided the lead gift to construct our new HOLA building in Lafayette Park.

Dana and Tom strongly support programs that help students achieve their personal and educational goals. In addition to their financial contributions to the students of HOLA, the Riccards created two endowments for students at the College of William and Mary. One sup- ports the college choral program, and the other supports student mental health services. Dana was involved with the UCLA Prytanean Alumnae Association, which grants scholarships to UCLA students. Tom served on the board of the Santa Clarita Child and Family Devel- opment Center, which provides mental health care for low income students.

Tom is the President of Modern Finance Company, a family owned auto finance company. He is a past President of the California Financial Services Association. As an avid marathoner, Tom mentored many aspiring marathoners as a volunteer with the LA Leggers running club. Dana has been on the Board of Operation School Bell and National Charity League. Both Dana and Tom are involved in leadership posi- tions at Bel Air Church. When not volunteering, or working, Tom and Dana can often be found cheering on the UCLA Bruins.
