Instead, one slick-fielding outfielder robbed another, as Brent Lillibridge's leaping catch at the left-field wall in the eighth inning helped send the A's to a 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. The A's had one out and a runner on second when Crisp made a dramatic bid for career hit No. 1,000. Lillibridge timed his jump perfectly, reaching over the wall and snatching the ball back into play. "It's a game of inches -- literally," A's manager Bob Melvin said. But the A's also could point to other factors that sent them to their 11th loss in 12 games. Left-hander Gio Gonzalez (5-5) issued a career-high seven walks, and though they led to only three runs, it was another laborious night for a member of the Oakland rotation. "Obviously there are things I need to clean up on the mound," Gonzalez said. The A's committed three errors, including reliever Brad Ziegler's off-target throw to second base on a potential double-play comebacker that allowed the go-ahead run to score in the sixth. One night after scoring four runs in the ninth to win, the A's mustered just four hits, all off White Sox starter John Danks (2- 8), who went 72/3 innings.

SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS February 21, 2011 Last updated February 20, 2011 12:35 p.m. PT Vargas, Fister expected to be part of M's rotation By TIM BOOTH AP SPORTS WRITER PEORIA, Ariz. -- For a couple of guys who've never enjoyed much job security, the start of the 2011 season is a bit different for both Jason Vargas and Doug Fister. Instead of a year ago when they were a couple of back-end pitchers expected to be part-time fill-ins of the Seattle Mariners pitching staff, Vargas and Fister enter this season almost assured of being in the Mariners rotation. "You still have to go out and throw well, but it's nice when you've got people that are counting on you to do what you've done in the past," Vargas said. Neither Vargas or Fister were statistically superior in 2010, but then again, neither were the Mariners sans AL Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez. Yet each proved a viable and valuable member of Seattle's rotation, appearing to cement their spots moving forward. Vargas set career highs in nearly every statistically category. The most important were his number of starts and innings pitched, finally proving he was fully recovered from surgery to remove a bone spur his pitching elbow in October 2007, followed by surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip in 2008 that all but ended his two- year career with the New York Mets. Vargas finished last season making 31 starts and throwing 192 2-3 innings, 101 more than he'd ever thrown in a major league season.

SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS February 25, 2011 For pitcher Pauley, being an afterthought a step up LARRY LARUE; Staff writer Published: 02/25/1112:05 am The Tacoma News Tribune PEORIA, Ariz. – When it comes to discussions about the Seattle Mariners’ starting rotation this season, David Pauley is an afterthought – which is an improvement over 2010, when he wasn’t thought of at all. A 27-year-old right-hander without a dominant pitch, Pauley was a midseason call-up for Seattle, and his first start of the year was a telling game. Against the New York Yankees, Pauley went five innings and allowed one earned run – a first-inning home run to Mark Texeira. Great game? Yes, but he lost nonetheless. And it didn’t get much better for Pauley or anyone else on the staff. There were lessons learned, however, and Pauley intends to make the most of them. “When I was called up by Boston (in 2006), I thought I had to be better than I’d been in the minors, and I tried too hard,” Pauley said. “Last season, I figured I’d use the stuff that got me here and not change.” Pauley finished the season with a 4-9 record with a 4.07 earned-run average in 902/3 innings. As a fifth starter, he pitched at least six innings in 11 of his 15 starts. “After last season, I felt better about myself. I do belong up here,” Pauley said. Now, he simply has to prove it to a new Mariners staff – and beat out teammates such as Michael Piñeda, Nate Robertson, Luke French and Charlie Hager.
