MT ISOTOPES 8-5 Game #: 14 w Away Game #: 6 2nd Southern Division ELY FLIRTS WITH NO-HITTER IN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT: Right-hander John Ely took a no-hitter almost as far as you can American Conference take one, tossing 6.2 hitless innings in a seven-inning contest before yielding a two-out double and having to settle for a one-hit shutout as the Albuquerque Isotopes split a doubleheader with the Iowa Cubs 1-3, 3-0 on a frigid Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park. With At Home .........................................5-3 Ely on the cusp of history entering the bottom of the seventh of the second game, the right-hander started the frame by striking out On the Road ...................................3-2 Bryan LaHair before fanning the always dangerous Bobby Scales to force Iowa down to its last batter. Marquez Smith then stepped Day .................................................2-3 to the plate and drove the first pitch he saw from Ely down the left field line, breaking up the no-hitter. Undeterred, Ely then coaxed Night ..............................................6-2 Matt Camp into a groundout, preserving the one-hit shutout and the 3-0 Isotopes win. Albuquerque built Ely a lead in the fourth when Corey Smith roped an RBI double to right, giving the Isotopes a 1-0 lead. The advantage was bolstered in the fifth, when Wilberto Last 5 games ..................................3-2 Ortiz was hit by a pitch leading off the frame in front of the red-hot Trayvon Robinson, who smashed a two-out, two-run homer to Last 10 games ................................6-4 right, extending the lead to 3-0 and paving the way for Ely’s win. The game two win ended up salvaging a split in the twin-bill as Iowa Streak ........................................... Not only will the Cubs have to find May ................................................0-0 a way to figure out Keisler on the mound, they’ll have to find a way to stop him at the plate as well. On April 16 at Oklahoma City, Keisler entered the game as a pinch-hitter with runners on the corners and nobody out in a 3-3 game in the fifth inning and promptly June ................................................0-0 delivered a double, scoring the go-ahead run in an eventual 8-6 ‘Topes win. Of the nine different Isotopes that have made pinch-hitter July .................................................0-0 plate appearances only infielder Juan Castro and Keisler have gotten hits and driven in runs. August ............................................0-0 September ......................................0-0 ONE-HIT WONDER: With his incredible one-hitter yesterday, John Ely came one out away from becoming the first Isotope in team history and just the seventh pitcher in the 38-year history of Triple-A baseball in Albuquerque to toss a no-no. As it stands, Ely’s is PROMOTIONS the eighth one-hitter spun by Isotopes pitchers in team history but the right-hander becomes just the third ‘Topes hurler to do it by himself, the last coming on August 2, 2009, when Charlie Haeger one-hit the Nashville Sounds in the first game of a doubleheader at Greer Stadium. A’s News Clips, Sunday, June 12, 2011 Oakland A's fall 3-2 to Chicago White Sox By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune CHICAGO -- The ball jumped off Coco Crisp's bat, and for a moment it appeared the A's might summon more comeback magic Saturday night. Instead, one slick-fielding outfielder robbed another, as Brent Lillibridge's leaping catch at the left-field wall in the eighth inning helped send the A's to a 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. The A's had one out and a runner on second when Crisp made a dramatic bid for career hit No. 1,000. Lillibridge timed his jump perfectly, reaching over the wall and snatching the ball back into play. "It's a game of inches -- literally," A's manager Bob Melvin said. But the A's also could point to other factors that sent them to their 11th loss in 12 games. Left-hander Gio Gonzalez (5-5) issued a career-high seven walks, and though they led to only three runs, it was another laborious night for a member of the Oakland rotation. "Obviously there are things I need to clean up on the mound," Gonzalez said. The A's committed three errors, including reliever Brad Ziegler's off-target throw to second base on a potential double-play comebacker that allowed the go-ahead run to score in the sixth. One night after scoring four runs in the ninth to win, the A's mustered just four hits, all off White Sox starter John Danks (2- 8), who went 72/3 innings.

  • Hoffmann Among the Highlights of 2009
Hoffmann among the highlights of 2009 By Jim Bastian, Journal Sports Writer POSTED: January 3, 2010 NEW ULM - The Year In Sports 2009, in New Ulm is led by Jamie Hoffmann's roller coaster ride in professional base- ball beginning with the Los Angeles Dodgers and ending with the Word Champion New York Yankees. It was a year for Hoffmann that began in AA before being promoted to AAA Albuquerque. An injury saw Hoffmann promoted to the Dodgers and on May 24, Hoffmann got his first major league hit. Facing the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Matt Palmer, Hoffmann hit a fastball over the fence in left field for three-run home run. What made it more special is that it was done in front of members of his family who were in at- tendance at the game. Hoffmann remained with the Dodgers until he was sent back down to AAA. Later, he was put on waivers by the Dodgers who removed him from their 40-man major league roster in what the Dodgers described as a "business de- cision." He later re-signed with the Dodgers. But like a curveball things changed for Hoffmann again. He was taken in the Rule 5 draft by the New York Yankees (who traded pitcher Brian Bruney to the Washington Nationals for the rights) and taken with the first overall pick in the draft. Hoffmann must remain on the Yankees 25-man major league roster for one year. In another highlight, Hoffmann started in right field for the Dodgers against the Chicago Cubs in a game on ESPN and made a diving catch before throwing out a runner at home.
