Unfortunately, this included the crucial spell prior to my A' Level exams when I realised the access to a range of my friend's music would be coming to an end. Im Jahr 1988 war die Hälfte der Charts gefüllt mit house music und die andere Hälfte mit Stock, Aitken und Waterman; Celine Dion gewann den Eurovision Songcontest und Cliff Richards Song „Mistletoe and Wine“ war der Weihnachtshit Nummer 1. Inmitten dieser Ereignisse kam im September etwas spärliches und eigenständiges: „Ancient Heart“, das selbst geschriebene Debüt Album einer jungen, gerade 19 gewordenen Dame aus Hampshire. Es war eine herbstliche Aufnahme, welche auf rockige Töne verzichtete und Instrumente wie Oboe und Flügelhorn beinhaltete. Im Zentrum stand die dunkle, berührende Stimme, welche über Tanita Tikarams junges Alter hinwegtäuschte . Im Jahr 1988 war ein Album, das so unverfälscht und melancholisch war, eine Ausnahmeerscheinung - aber eine, welche 4 Millionen Mal verkauft wurde und 4 Single Charts produzierte. Die erste Single „Good Tradition“ erreichte die Top 10. Die zweite „Twist in My Sobriety“ wurde seither von einem duzend Künstler gecovert, inklusive einer aufregenden elektronischen Version von Liza Minnelli. Im selben Jahr trat Tanita mehrfach bei „Top of the Pops“ auf, ging auf große Tour und wurde eine zeitlang als „Bardin von Basingstoke“ gefeiert (was sie der Undurchsichtigkeit ihrer Texte verdankte und – wenn man ganz ehrlich ist – ein Stück weit ihrer „unlächelnden“ unnahbaren Art).
