    DEMO : Purchase from www.A-PDF.com to remove the watermark CHAPTER FOUR MIDDLE WEST IRANIAN Prods Oklor Skjarv@ 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Overview Middle Persian (MPers.) and Parthian (Parth.) constitute the western branch of the known Middle Iranian languages.* The term 'Pahlavi' (pahl.) refers to the Middle Persian of the Zoroastrian texts, but is also sometimes used fo r Middle Persian in general . The indigenous words fo r the languages may have been Parsig and Pahlawanag 'Parthian' (found in a Manichean text). This usage was sometimes adopted by Western scholars, as well (Herzfeld, Nyberg: Parsik, Pahlavik). Still earlier, Pahlavi and Chaldeo-Pahlavi were used. The two languages are closely similar in structure, though Parthian shares some features with its eastern neighbors, notably with Bactrian, rather than with Middle Persian (see Sims-Williams 2007). The fact that Manichean Middle Persian and Parthian were two separate languages with different linguistic affinities was firstshown by Tedesco (1921 ). Parthian was spoken in Parthia, east of the Caspian Sea, and became an official language under the Parthian (Arsacid) rulers of Iran (ca. 247 BCE-224 CE). It is known mainly from a large corpus of short, fo rmulaic, Parthian inscriptions mostly on potsherds from the Parthian capital of Nisa dating from the first century BCE (see Skj::erv0 1995a, 1999); a few royal Parthian inscriptions from the last couple of centuries of Parthian rule; Parthian versions of the inscriptions of the third-century Sasanian kings Ardashir I, Shapur 1, and Narseh; and from the Manichean (Man.) texts fo und at Turfan in north-eastern Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang) in the early nineteenth century.

The School recognises the importance of supporting business critical services outside of these core hours including weekends, bank holidays and School closure days. It is clear that in some areas of the School, groups of staff have been providing an on-call service outside core hours as a goodwill gesture and the basis of these arrangements have differed across departments. This policy provides a framework to ensure: • Key School systems and services can be adequately supported and an effective response and resolution provided to matters requiring urgent attention outside of core business hours, • A consistent approach to the implementation of on-call and call- out arrangements and, • Employees who may be required to provide an essential on-call and call-out service in order to respond to service user needs and to operational service requirements are rewarded on a consistent, fair and equitable basis. This policy is part of the emergency plan, and aims to harmonise practice across the School. 2 Scope This policy applies to Professional Services employees only, in recognition of the fact that employees in other staff categories are not required to formally adopt on-call arrangements. Introduction Exact time intervals are needed for navigation and surveying, in science and engineering. In the past, HF radio signals were often the only way to calibrate a clock onboard a ship or a frequency standard in a laboratory. In the age of GPS satellites and portable atomic clocks, however, time and frequency distribution via HF has become largely obsolete. New applications like network synchronization require an accuracy that cannot be met by HF signals. Moreover, the transmission scheme of most stations and the peculiarity of shortwave propagation make these signals less suitable for automatic, unattended reception. Consequently, many time signal stations have disappeared. In former times, coastal radio stations also transmitted time signals on their CW frequencies. Although numerous of these services to mariners are still listed in, you will hardly find an active one.
