3 Open To Discussion With David Morris - [email protected]

The sunshine has been booked for Saturday, 6 th July when we are all meeting at Durlston Country Park, near Swanage, BH19 2JL. This is a great opportunity to meet your fellow enthusiasts in superb surroundings, and while we talk and play radio your family can go and discover the Globe, Tilly Whim caves, the lighthouse, dolphins, clifftop walks and fantastic views overlooking Poole Bay and the English Channel. There is an excellent café / restaurant in Durlston Castle.

Come along any time after about 1030 and find the dark grey VW Tiguan in the top car park. The only charge for the day is the cost of car parking.

As this is an elevated site, be warned that the path from the car park to the restaurant is steep. Bring your radios and your aerials and hear what an interference free location can do to your listening!

Any questions? [email protected] before the day, or 07860 249065 on 6 th July.

When you go to Amsterdam what is the premier tourist attraction?

No, not Anne Frank’s House or the Science Museum. The ship of Radio Veronica from 1964 until closedown on 31 st August, 1974 claims first prize!

On the north side of the harbour the mv Norderney is now in retirement. Whilst the aerial masts remain in situ the boat is now used as a nightclub and on a very sunny Sunday afternoon there was no way of going on board this icon of offshore radio history. I am so pleased to have seen Veronica!

Thank you to MIKE TERRY from Bournemouth who has sent OTD this information: “AJ Beirens was formerly of RNI, Radio Atlantis and many other stations. He has continued to write his very interesting blog which now has 34 chapters. The blog is entitled ‘Getting High on Radio’. You will find it at http://highonradio.blogspot.com

There is information about AJ at The Pirate Radio Hall of Fame:

‘AJ Beirens was born in Brugge, Belgium in 1947, AJ was employed by Townsend Thoresen at their ferry terminal at Zeebrugge. A radio fan, he was very useful to the owners of Radio Northsea International. Based in Zurich, they could only hear their station on short wave but, if that was off the air, they did not know what was going on.

4

AJ would keep them informed by telex from his office. They came to rely on him. AJ suggested that the station should include a programme for DX-ers. It turned out that one of the owners, Edwin Bollier, was an enthusiastic DX-er himself and liked the idea. He asked AJ to present and produce the show. The first Northsea Goes DX was transmitted on 21st September 1970. From March 1973, he also presented a magazine programme Our World in Action. Both shows were only broadcast on the station's short wave outlets...’ http://www.offshoreradio.co.uk/djs7b.htm

Mike concludes “I well remember his RNI DX programme, for me it was essential listening”. Your OTD Editor mirrors that remark and North Sea Goes DX was the radio highlight of the month when that programme was broadcast on Sunday mornings. I still have the cassette tape recordings of some of them . . .

STEFAN WORONIECKI says “RTE's majestic long-wave radio mast on the front cover of the May edition of Communication reminded me of a more local one. Up the road from me (Horsham) we have Crawley Hospital Radio, one watt ERP on 1287 kHz. A bit less power here! I am attaching a photograph - you can see it towering (just about) over the vegetation and cars where it sits in the back car park of Crawley hospital”.

Stefan’s son lives in St Leonard’s on Sea which is on the Sussex coast overlooking the English Channel and France. Stefan comments about the number of French stations he can hear when he is visiting and wonders if this is normal for DXers who are near the coast.

From home overlooking Poole Harbour, your OTD editor can hear stations in Cherbourg very clearly most days eg Courtoisie on 87.8 and France Bleu Cotentin on 100.7. A very regular station from the Channel Islands is Island FM on 104.7.

Come to Durlston on 6 th July and hear the difference!

Many DXers are also stamp collectors or Philatelists.

When viewing a French Colonies stamp packet recently this first day cover for the inauguration of the Radio Comores transmitter on Dzaoudzi was found.

Who remembers hearing this station on 7260 kHz?

Help Desk with Tony Rogers - [email protected]

Welcome to this month's "Help Desk", with a question from David Harris and one posted to the BDXC News list from Tony Wake, along with several replies to Tony's question.

0619a - Scanners

David Harris asks: I am looking at replacing my Realistic PRO 2042 desktop scanner. It covers 25 MHz - 520 MHz & 760 MHz - 1300 MHz and has 1000 memories. I am looking for a desktop scanner with similar capabilities. Is it worth paying for a new scanner that can resolve digital modes?

0619b - Noise cancelling

New member Tony Wake recently posted an interesting question on the BDXC News list about noise cancelling, which prompted some equally interesting answers. Tony asked: Has anyone any experience with the BHI DSP noise cancellers? As I understand it they work differently to the ones such as MFJ. The BHI cancellers fit between the receiver and the headphones or speaker unlike the MFJ ones which fit between the antenna and the receiver also requiring a second antenna. I live in a bungalow surrounded by other properties (close) so am plagued with lots of different interference. I have a long wire antenna (40 metres) which goes round the garden on top of a six foot high fence. This is the best I can do antenna wise due to the other properties. The antenna does give good reception but it is spoiled by interference. I would appreciate any comments.

And following on from Tony's question, here are the replies posted to the News list in the order that they were received:

Mike Usher : The BHIs work in a very different way to the MFJ1025 and 1026. The idea with them is to phase out noise before it reaches your receiver. If it works it is the ideal solution. The BHIs process the sound already in your receiver digitally. Consequently whilst this will reduce noise and improve SNR, it also means some sounds that you might want listen to such as music will be treated as noise and will be largely removed. So if you mainly listen to just amateur radio and speech, the BHI might be fine. But phasing out the noise using a second antenna via an MFJ or other phaser will be a better solution.

John Hammett : I have the BHI DSP which I use exclusively with my AOR 7030, homebrew MW Loop and Wellbrook 1530 for MW DXing. As the 7030 doesn’t have any form of noise control it works well but very much as Mike describes. My SWLing is done with an Icom R75 & 81’ long wire, the R75 has a built in DSP and noise blanker. On the odd occasion however the local noise still breaks through. To overcome this I use the Wimo QRM Eliminator (same principle as the MFJs) which requires a much shorter secondary ‘noise’ antenna, I usually use my 6 metre dipole as the secondary. Nulling the noise was a bit tricky for the first few attempts, but I soon got used to it and it works extremely well. I think the Wimo is quite a bit cheaper than the MFJs, also maybe try looking on eBay for QRM eliminators, as there are some East European versions available.

Chris McWhinnie : There are a few things to try, in increasing order of expense:

Earth your receiver's earth terminal to a central heating water piper or nearby mains water pipe or an Earth stake. Not a gas pipe! A jubilee clip will hold a wire to an exposed metal pipe nicely, making good contact.

6 Try running a coax cable (50 or 75 ohm) out of your house and then join the centre conductor to the antenna further from the house. Earth the outer shield of the coax at the receiver. Flat balanced ribbon cable can be effective too but is pricier.

Try looping the antenna around the fence and taking it back to the coax screen and/or receiver Earth. This often drops noise more than signal.

Try an active (with amplifier) antenna further away from the house. Probably a small loop is better but a whip is cheaper. I have a Wellbrook: it can be rotated for (hopefully) a null in the noise. If desperate, turning it horizontal near the ground should exhibit a larger reduction in noise than signal. (I find two old plastic chairs hold a loop nicely horizontally). Decorative it isn’t.

A passive and shielded or magnetic loop - preferably outdoors or in a shed (many circuits online) can be effective but they really need to be tuned to the frequency of interest. Limited use if you listen to a wide range of bands.

A tuneable loop for LW and MW can be very effective. Wound on a cardboard box for rotating or fixed with four nails in a window frame works well.

A vertical antenna run up the side or inside of a telescopic fibreglass pole can be useful. Larger ones need guying and you need to run a few Earth wires on the ground. This isn’t one for awkward neighbours, partners, children. They can be quite noisy but respond well with noise cancellation techniques.

An antenna noise canceller such as the MFJ 1025/6 or Timewave ANC-4 needs a good antenna which is suffering from noise - probably outdoors - and a noise antenna with even more noise - probably in the home. These are fiddly units and I find different antenna combinations work better on different bands and on signals from a low angle or high angle. They can, however, with lots of experimentation, be very effective. Certainly try different noise antenna positions and different main antennas.

Yes you can try baluns transformers and antenna tuning units to match your antenna better to the receiver but it’s easy to be too purist, receivers don’t need an exact match and often such accessories don’t reduce the noise at all.

Noise blankers and audio bandwidth processors are growing increasingly sophisticated but it’s better to stop the interference getting to the radio in the first place.

I hope that helps you decide on some experiments to prioritise.

Graham Bedwell : I certainly take on board an active aerial noise canceller is better than a retro system, but I have never got one working! I have used the original BHINEIM 1031 noise eliminator for many years (which was an updated FOC by BHI) with an FT900 for amateur radio operation. On the strength of the performance of the NEIM 1031, I purchased another for BC listening linked to my ancient R70.

On the 80 metre bands the unit drops the noise floor hash by about 3S points by ear. The matching BHI loudspeaker I found lacked HF for my poor hearing and found an ex-PMR General Electric speaker which suited me a lot better. I now use hearing aids.

Antenna wise, I use a bottom of the garden receiving aerial as far away from the fizzing overhead phone lines as possible. Received signals are down but noise a lot, lot less. Some junk sale ex- 75 ohm TV coax bring the signals to the shack via a 2:1 step down ferrite ring transformer with a

7 local earth with a counterpoise for the aerial about 5 or 7 turns on the secondary, but the coax is only earthed at the shack end.

Mike Usher : Getting a phasing set up to work properly is almost an exact science. My initial experience with my phasers involved using it with a conventional radio. The results were OK but hardly worth cracking open the champagne. But when I started using them with an SDR the MFJ and my other phasers came into their own. This is because viewing the two signals graphically makes it so much easier to match the signal strength on both antennas. As you know getting this right is pretty much critical to getting the system to work. Having said that Graham your set sounds excellent. I just wish I had the space.

Tony Wake : Thanks everyone. You have been very helpful and it is most appreciated. I have a lot to think about now and am looking forward to that. I have learnt a lot already from your replies and am most grateful.

Thank you for an excellent question, Tony! And of course if anyone has anything to add then please send your comments to "Help Desk" for inclusion next time.

And to finish this month's "Help Desk", Nick Ward comments (0319a): I've finally got around to finding a world map. It is all thanks to the advice I received in the April Communication magazine. The ns6t.net site produced a number of A4 charts with varying maximum distances. I printed out four, then laminated them in pairs back to back. Great. I was also going to purchase the 'proper job' from Waters and Stanton. I have a feeling that this would have been a good purchase? I didn't buy it as its A2 size is too much for the station. Thanks to you all, problem sorted ...

Mike Terry mentioned the Sunday Times Magazine Gillian Reynolds’ article on The Future of Radio, which is also online. She wrote of James Purnell, BBC Director of Radio, explaining why Sounds will ensure BBC radio’s futur e. This was at the Radio Academy conference. Gillian stated that the huge BBC Archive will enable ‘binge listening’ via the BBC Sounds app. “ Purnell believes so much in Sounds that he would welcome, he said, commercial and community radio stations onto his new platform .”

I can see how this would be akin to Joe Public’s binge watching of box sets on Netflix, Amazon Prime, 4OD and other platforms. www.thetimes.co.uk/magazine/culture/gillian -reynolds-the-future-of-radio-3txtz7962

9 Listening Post with Alan Roe [email protected]

On the evening of Friday 17 May , I once again made a full recording using my SDR radio set to record a band spread from 3850 to 9950kHz continuously from 1800-2400UTC. Some of this, later in the evening, I heard live, however having the recording has allowed me to more thoroughly review what was broadcast that evening. I’m still to review much of the recording, so here are a few highlights for the 1800-2000UT slot.

VOA Deewa Radio in Pashto was putting in a good signal 5890kHz via Biblis (and a fair-to-good signal also via Udon Thani on 7540kHz) from 1800UT. I’ve heard this station often enough, but rarely have I actually listened for any length of time.

The programme comprised some opening comments and then into a rather nice 5-minute long middle eastern song with female vocals. A presenter then took over and conducted an interview over the phone, in which the interviewee occasionally sang ‘a capella ’. The programme continued with more telephone chat and middle eastern music.

It all sounded fairly informal and not news or current affairs-orientated. It was a pleasant hour (albeit I occasionally ‘fast-forwarded’ through some of the Pashto chat). Both 5890 and 7540kHz are scheduled from 1700-1900 daily, and I’ll check back on this station more frequently in future.

All India Radio in Urdu has been heard with a great signal into the early evening on 6140kHz quite regularly for several weeks now fading-in from before 1800UT until transmission ends at 1930UT. This hour-and-a-half slot is mostly a pleasant mix of Indian music, comprising raga and classical music and also rather more upbeat film music and similar. Tonight’s programme followed this pattern. I’m rather less keen on raga and classical music, which I find to be a little hypnotic (raga in particular); however the film music is rather more enjoyable for me. Actually, I use the term “film music” as a rather generic term – I’m not sure that the tunes I hear are actually film tunes, but the term gives a sense as to the type of music. 6140kHz is scheduled from 1430- 1930 daily.

Radio Tumbril had a generally good signal with the programme Encore broadcast via Channel 292 on 6070kHz from 1900-2000UT. Encore is one of the rare programmes available on shortwave playing classical music, produced and presented by BDXC member Brice Avery.

This episode (in which all pieces were requested by listeners) started off in fine style with Dance of the Knights from Prokoviev’s Romeo & Juliet . The programme also featured two pieces requested by another BDXC member Allen Dean including The Judge from Mors et Vita by Charles Gounod. It was a very pleasant hour, and I can see that I’m going to enjoy a lot of varied classical pieces in this programme.

10 Here’s a reminder of Radio Tumbril’s schedule: 1500-1600UT Sundays and 1900-2000UT Fridays on 6070khz (via Channel 292), and 0000-0100UT Mondays on 7490kHz (via WBCQ) – and my apologies for missing the Sunday 1500 broadcast from my Music on Shortwave list in the latest Broadcasts in English booklet.

Whilst I’m sat here listening to this programme for the second time , (and taking a whole hour to type this one paragraph) it’s worth mentioning that 1500UT on Sunday now brings a clash of programmes, with Encore on 6070khz and another favourite (produced and presented by another BDXC member: Bill Tilford) From The Isle of Music on 9400khz via Spaceline, Bulgaria.

However, all is not lost: I now set my SDR with a bandwidth of 6MHz centred on 7000khz and so can record both frequencies at 1500. I then listen live to whichever has the best reception, and then subsequently to the other frequency. If either, or both, frequencies are poor on Sunday, then 6070khz at 1900UT has repeats on Tuesdays (From The Isle of Music ) and Fridays (Encore ).

Radio Thailand World Service usually puts in a good signal on 9920kHz in Thai, English and German from 1800 to 2115 (except for a 15-minute slot from 2015-2030).

I start at 1800 with a one-hour programme in Thai comprising mostly modern Thai, with some Western, music and a little chat by two female co-presenters. I guess most of the Thai songs are current chart hits. It’s a pleasant enough way to pass an hour until 1900UT when there is a one-hour programme in English.

This programme is a replay of the news hour broadcast earlier on local (I think) FM frequencies. News includes an announcement that the Thai Forest Conservation Party (who have two seats in parliament) has decided to join a political alliance led by the Palang Pracharath Party in a bid to form a coalition government.

This was followed by a news item reporting that the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) will be “purchasing another 200,000 metric tonnes of palm oil for electricity generation in a bid to alleviate the price of palm oil ”, by which I assume the purpose is to push the prices of palm oil up. At a time when the use of palm oil is in the news because of the effect on the eco-system of the clearance of large areas of tropical forests, I wonder what the Thai Forest Conservation Party’s view is on this development. A few minutes later, the conservation theme continues with an announcement that various national parks will be closed until September or October will be closed to allow them to recover from damage caused by visitors.

After a couple of local adverts is a Global news segment. At twenty minutes into the programme are two promos from the PTT extolling the benefits of renewable and sustainable energies: “ we promise [that] we will protect the forests together for our life and the future. [] with fossil fuels becoming a nonrenewable resource and becoming more scarce every day, it is important to discuss renewable energy for the future. [Renewable energies] are often lower in cost, waste free and can be harvested without harm to nature. [] PTT: sustainable growth for all.” Hmm –

I’m not sure how the purchase of palm oil fits into that. Continuing this theme, a few minutes later is a report on the 2019 International Conference on Bio-Diversity about to be held in Bangkok. An interesting hour of news and comment from Thailand aimed at a local, rather than international, audience. (The transmission continues with German from 2000-2015, English news 2030-2045 and Thai news 2045-2115). 11 Radio Mali is heard on 9635khz with a good signal at 1800UT running later than scheduled and with an excellent signal with a frequency announcement in French and very clear ID “Vous écoutez Radiodiffusion T élévision du Mali ” and a little local African music followed by some talk until the transmitter cut off at 1818UT.

Two minutes later, I see a transmitter come up on 5995kHz with some African music. Reception here is markedly weaker and noisier than 9635khz had been, but I think safe to presume this to be Mali. The signal remains until 0001UT when it cuts off, and spot checks through the period show no appreciable improvement in the signal.

Voice of Turkey provides plenty of Turkish music throughout the day, throughout the various language services. At 1800UT there was an excellent signal for their Turkish service on 9460kHz and (following a news broadcast) presented 55 minutes of very enjoyable music, including (rather unexpectedly) several songs that sounded rather like tangos.

I stay with this for the through until 1900, when the tone changes and a discussion programme commences including frequent short breaks of traditional Turkish music with a single male voice and a stringed instrument. I guess that this is a programme marking Ramazan. 9460kHz is scheduled in Turkish from 1600-2100UT. Meanwhile, the English service has fair-to-good reception on 5945kHz from 1830UT (actually: from 1833UT when the transmitter fires-up midway into the news broadcast).

From 1845-1915UT is more Turkish music, interrupted by the programme Turkey’s Tourist Attractions , today featuring Mardin “the shining city of Mesopotamia ”. This five-minute programme described the geography and history of Mardin and detailed some of the many historical sights and sites that can be visited by tourists.

It was an interesting enough programme, and certainly would inspire interest as a possible tourist destination when visiting, however it was perhaps a little unimaginative and sounded a little like a Wikipedia or Wikitravel entry.

Location reports from Mardin, with input from local people and the like would have been more interesting. However, I realise that this would be an expensive and time-consuming production, so there is no complaint from me – just an observation.

These are just a few highlights of programmes that I have listened to during the 2-hour slot 1800-2000UT. I have another 4 hours still to review, but that may not be possible right now.

I’ll try and archive the 500Gb of data and perhaps I’ll come back to it another day when reception conditions are particularly poor.

12 China Radio International

Once again, China Radio International have revamped their programme schedule. A few months ago, CRI started including audio of TV programmes from CGTN. As the CRI website doesn’t include up to date programme schedules (there are several versions of old schedules still available), I attempted to compile their full 24 hour / 7 day schedule. As I was nearing completion, I noticed that some programmes had again changed, with the CGTN programmes dropped and other new programmes introduced, so I restarted the compilation.

Here is the complete CRI English Schedule, as monitored during May 2019. The CRI broadcast day runs from 1600UT, so programmes from 0000-1600UT are heard one UT day later than 1600-2400UT. All programmes are daily, unless otherwise indicated; all times and days are UTC..

Country Music on UK Radio By David Harris [email protected]

Country music is the most popular in the USA, states www.radio-locator.com . In the USA there are 2,179 country stations out of a total of over 15,000 AM and FM outlets (there is no DAB in the USA). Country stations have a 7.5% market share and are the third most listened to stations in the USA after news/talk and adult contemporary music. The UK has been very slow to recognise country music with Bob Harris Country, being the only BBC national country music programme. This show is broadcast from 1900 - 2000 local time on Thursdays on BBC Radio 2 (FM and DAB).

This situation seems to be changing with up to two Country music stations available, depending on where you live in the UK. Chris Country launched in 2013 and is available on DAB in , , , , , Suffolk, , and London. The station is owned by Chris Steven’s Devaweb which is based at Media City, Salford. According to their website the station is: “A UK radio station that’s pretty obsessed about American country music. We love the stories, the passion, the performance and the emotion of country music. After all, it’s real musicians playing real instruments, singing about the real world.” www.chriscountry.co.uk The station claims 49,000 listeners each week.

Chris Country have now been joined by media giant Bauer who launched Country Hits Radio on 5 April 2019. https://planetradio.co.uk/country-hits This station is available on DAB in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, South Yorkshire, Lancashire, Humber, North East England, Glasgow, Dundee, Inverness, and Ayr. Bauer’s dance music station Kiss Fresh was removed to make room for the new station. Bauer states that the station is aimed at 25-44 year olds. Bauer have been very active this year in buying up other radio groups including Celador, Lincs, UKRD and some Wireless Group stations. In addition to Country Hits they have also launched classical music station Scala (DAB only) and rebranded some local stations into a partial network, Greatest Hits.

Bauer are playing a very long game with station acquisitions and new format launches. I would not be surprised if they try to put Scala (a classical music DAB station) on FM at some time in the future and go head to head with Global’s Classic FM. If Country Hits takes off then that could displace one of Bauer’s FM stations in some markets.

The only other full-time country music station in the UK is Downtown Country which is on DAB in Northern Ireland. This is also a Bauer station. https://planetradio.co.uk/downtown-country Some BBC local radio stations have occasional country music programmes. These include: Scotland, Ulster, Shropshire, Lincoln, Lancashire and Norfolk. Chris Country also syndicate some shows to around 20 local stations in the UK. There are numerous internet-only country

14 stations, some of which originate from the UK and Ireland. The unofficial stations Radio Star Country 981 kHz and Radio North 846 kHz, which are mainly aimed at people living in Northern Ireland, also broadcast some country music.

Not only is country music on your radio but it is also on TV. I recently retuned my Freeview television and came across a new station, Keep it Country TV on ch. 87. It is also available on satellite channels Sky 376 and Freesat 516. Their definition of “country” seems quite liberal with the programme schedule featuring artists such as hard rock band Thin Lizzy and pop singer Neil Sedaka. The company has offices in Romford, London. Quite a lot of the content seems to come from Ireland where country music is very popular. The station launched in January 2019 and broadcasts music videos for 19 hours a day, seven days a week. www.keepitcountry.tv

Total Country is another Country Music TV station on satellite and cable only, Sky 373 and Virgin 346, which was launched in November 2018. The station has tried a number of music formats over the years and has been known as Channel U, Channel AKA and Massive R & B. Regulation of cable and satellite TV is very light in the UK and stations can easily change formats. https://tvplayer.com/watch/totalcountry

I think it is inevitable that Ofcom will eventually relinquish control of the format and content of commercial stations. It seems strange that the state wants to control the output of commercial radio stations yet we have a free press who can publish whatever they feel fit. I am the editor of a local community newspaper and have to ensure that the content of the paper is legal, truthful and decent as well as satisfying the needs of both readers and advertisers. No government agency dictates how much local news I publish or what percentage of the paper should be photographs or adverts. Why do we need state control of commercial radio?

The sudden rise of country music may be due to the fact that the market for bland pop and dance music is now saturated. In theory, more stations should mean more choice but the opposite seems to be true. In the definitive media studies textbook, “Power without Responsibility (8 th ed.)” Curran J & Seaton J. Routledge. London. 2018, the authors make the following important point, “Commercial broadcasting is based not on the sale of programmes to audiences, but on the sale of audiences to advertisers” (p 455). This means that , in order to attract advertising, broadcasters will try to win audiences by putting the same sort of programmes on any new channels.

It remains to be seen if country music radio takes off in the UK. I am not a fan myself and the offer from both Chris Country and Country Hits did seem a little bland. However, anything that moves radio away from contemporary pop and explores other genres of music must be a step in the right direction.

Ed (Chrissy Brand) adds: Country music has moved on a lot from the old style country and western music that is associated with the likes of Slim Whitman and Dolly Parton. There is a lot of positive, uplifting and egalitarian country music by new and up and coming artists as well as huge artists that most of us in Europe might not have heard of. Take a listen to US-based UK radio presenters Gabby Sanderson's Straight Outta Nashville programme, with co-presenter Zac.

I am a big fan of what the musical genre termed Americana (I'd describe it as edgier, more serious country music), with younger artists such as Sarah Jarosz and Lera Lynn being well- established. They and others of their ilk were showcased regularly on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion show and its successor, Chris Thiles' Live From Here . Some radio shows also cover bluegrass. It could be an exciting diversion from the mainstream UK radio output, as David says, and it will be interesting to hear what Chris Country and others evolve into. UK sisters Ward Thomas have adapted the American country music roots sound and are regularly heard on BBC Radio 2; Swedish sisters First Aid Kit also appeal to an international audience.

Concluding a look at DAB from the April issue . DAB brought new genres of music to Italian dials. Substantial jazz is available 24/7 on Jazz 24, an American station which is relayed by the DAB Italia mux. Before DAB, only highly progressive, experimental - and sometimes, quite frankly, unlistenable - jazz sessions could be found on , but we had no way to listen to such artists as Duke Ellington or Miles Davis, to name just two.

DAB also solved the half century old shortage of classical music, dating back to the 70s reorganization of RAI radio, when Radio 3 culture and information programmes began to take up a large part of the daily schedule (the 6 to 12 slot is devoted to inform ation, press review and current affairs, 2 to 7 p.m. to culture, books, literature).

Now Radio Classica is nonstop classical recorded music, while Radio 3 musical component is made up of live concerts, operas and, as said, jazz. To things up, I've c ompiled the following summary list, according to sole or prevailing programme content.

Meyerton shortwave station falls silent

From the script of AWR “Wavescan” DX Programme No 527

According to the latest available information, the huge double shortwave station located near the small town of Meyerton in South Africa is due to close today, Sunday 31 March 2019. The stated reason for the termination of this massive shortwave station, one of the largest in the world, is due to insufficient clientele choosing to broadcast to Africa and beyond from its bevy of shortwave and antenna systems. Apparently the withdrawal of the BBC London from its use of Meyerton as one of its African relay stations was the proverbial last straw that broke this African camel’s financial back.

Back in 1964, SABC, the South African Broadcasting Corporation, procured a tract of land containing 1250 acres south of Johannesburg in a hilly country area due east of the town of Meyerton for the construction of a new shortwave broadcasting station. In reality, two shortwave stations were constructed on this large property on Marlin Road; one at the northern end, and the other at the southern end.

The northern location was planned as the high power station with transmitters rated at 250 kW and 500 kW for international coverage, almost worldwide; and the southern station was planned for domestic coverage in South Africa, as well as for regional coverage of other nearby African countries, with transmitters rated at 100 kW.

During the following year on 27 October 1965, Prime Minister Dr. H. F. Verwoerd officially opened this new double shortwave station, which was named in his honor, as the H. F. Verwoerd Shortwave Station. At the time of the opening ceremony, just one transmitter at 250 kW was ready for active service, though three more similar units were installed and taken into service during the following months.

Left: One of the many colourful QSLs issued by Radio RSA in the 1970s featuring South African wildlife and flora

Over a period of the next 15 years, a total of 17 shortwave transmitters were progressively installed at the two locations, together with a total of 49 antenna systems. At the height of its capability, the high powered northern shortwave station contained 15 active transmitters at 250 kW and 500 kW, together with 40 antenna systems, mainly curtain antennas. Likewise, the lower powered southern site contained 8 active transmitters at 100 kW and 9 antenna systems, mainly log periodics. Two transmitters, one at each sub- location, were kept in standby mode.

The feeder lines running from the transmitters at the northern station exit the transmitter building via two tunnels, each 8 feet square. In this way, the feeder lines are protected from harsh weather patterns. The feeder lines are made up of ½ inch copper tubing, and 40 miles of this tubing are used in total at the two stations. This powerful shortwave station consumes a massive 6 megawatts of electricity.

20 The studios and offices for the external services of SABC, the South African Broadcasting Corporation are housed in an office building in central Johannesburg, some 40 miles north of the transmitting stations. Under the management of Radio South Africa RSA, a total of 50 international radio listeners in different parts of the world served as regular monitors on behalf of this shortwave service.

Radio South Africa transferred the double shortwave station at Meyerton to a commercial radio organisation, Sentech, in November 1996. Since then Sentech has operated the station as a commercial venture, with many international radio organizations reaching their international audiences via this shortwave station at Meyerton.

Over the intervening years, many international radio organisations have taken out a relay of their programming via this double Meyerton shortwave station, such as for example: The BBC in London, Voice of America in Washington DC, Radio Canada International in Montreal, Radio Netherlands in Hilversum Holland, and Radio France International in Paris. Other stations that have also utilized the Meyerton station have included and Adventist World Radio, as well as Channel Africa and Radio Sonder Grense in South Africa itself.

In earlier times, RSA in Johannesburg issued colorful QSL cards that featured animal life and country scenes in South Africa. Radio monitors worldwide would describe these QSL cards as some of the most beautiful QSL cards in their collection. After the shortwave station was sold off to Sentech, they also issued a set of colorful QSL cards, eight in number, from their corporate office in Honeydew, a suburb of the large regional city Johannesburg.

The QSL cards from Sentech were signed by Kathy Otto, who was very cooperative with the international radio audience, and each card identified the organisation that was on the air via the Sentech shortwave station. Thus, it was possible in earlier times to receive two QSL cards for the one reception report, the origination program studio and the Sentech shortwave station itself.

So what will happen to this major double shortwave station at Meyerton in South Africa? It is too early yet to know for sure. Perhaps the land will be bought by local farmers, but what will happen to the major but now aging items of electronic equipment? Only time will tell.

Bolivian Mining Radio By Martin Butera [email protected]

Radio Mineras Bolivianas are unique in the world, because they belonged to the unions of mining workers, and were created to defend the interests and the struggle of the workers' movement.

Mining was fundamental in Bolivia long before the country reached its independence in 1825. When the Spanish conquistadores began to exploit the silver of Potosí in the 17th century they never imagined that there was such a quantity under the "silver mountain". Bolivia's exports were mainly based on silver and then tin, until the country's economy was transformed in the last decades of the 20th century. For three centuries the silver extracted from Potosí was taken to Spain, until the mountain lost its original shape and gradually collapsed. It has been written that six million Aymara and Quechua Indians, plus a considerable number of African slaves, lost their lives in the mines during that period. Potosí was then one of the great cities of the western world. In 1625 it had a population greater than London or Paris, and more churches than any other city in the new world. Although isolated in the altiplano, at an altitude of 4,200 meters, in Potosí the most luxurious goods imported from Europe could be found.

From the independence of Bolivia in 1825 until the mid-1970s, mining continued to be the main economic activity generating income. Silver gradually became less important, but the country became the world's second tin producer. In the mid-1950s minerals accounted for 70% of exports. A few thousand workers in the mining centres had on their shoulders the responsibility of sustaining the economy of the country and its five million inhabitants. No government could afford to ignore the political opinion of the miners, especially when their unions were reputed to be the most democratic and politically advanced in Latin America.

Station Resistance

The 1980 military coup of General Luis García Meza had triumphed in Bolivia, many citizens who resisted were killed or imprisoned, others escaped into exile. The army managed to completely control the cities. The first military objective was the media: all the radios, television channels and newspapers were closed and when they came to light again, it was under strict military censorship. Actually, not all radio stations ...

The chain of approximately twenty stations in the mining districts of Potosí and Oruro, in the Bolivian highlands, continued transmissions under very high pressure. In order to know what was really happening in Bolivia after the coup, people searched the radio for the frequency of La Voz del Minero Radio Animas or Radio Pío XII. Even foreign correspondents based their news radios on mining radios. The army knew, that is why every day the troops came closer to the mining districts, breaking little by little the resistance of the workers who defended their stations with their lives.

Photo: The radio station door shattered by bullets, during the military coup of Garcia Meza

22 One of the last mining stations to fall under military control was Radio Animas. This is the transcript of the dramatic final live broadcast: The troops are approximately five kilometres from Siete Suyos and very close to Santa Ana ... so we are preparing to defend ourselves ... The number of detainees reaches 31, who have been moved to the city of Tupiza according to the reports that have reached us ... This is Radio Animas for all the south of the country ... We are in this crucial hour, we are in constant mobilization, women have contributed greatly in the preparation of the defence ... We will be to the last comrades, because that is our mission, to defend ourselves ...

That was near the end. Minutes later there shooting heard at Radio Animas. The last thing the announcer managed to transmit was a message to the other stations, Pío XII and Radio Nacional de Huanuni, to take the signal and continue with the live broadcasts of the mining chain. Others continued until the army silenced the last one, destroying the equipment and killing those who defended their right to communicate.

La Voz del Minero, Radio Vanguardia de Colquiri, Radio Animas, Radio 21 de Diciembre, Radio Nacional de Huanunison are some of the radio stations created, financed and controlled by the mining workers of Bolivia.

In the Beginning

It all started around 1949, with a station that settled in the mining district of Catavi. During the following 15 years, other districts followed suit: they bought equipment, trained young people from the camps, financed by workers who gave a percentage of their salary to support the radio stations.

The stations started precariously, equipped with the bare minimum. Some managed to obtain international support and became more sophisticated broadcasters, with better equipment and facilities. Several even built an assembly hall next to the station, in order to broadcast the union meetings live. Radio Vanguardia decorated its living room with a large mural that tells the story of the Colquiri mining centre. A scene in the mural depicts the bombing of Bolivian Air Force aircraft in 1967, when the country was subjected to a military dictatorship.

At the beginning of the 1970s there were 26 stations in operation, almost all of them in the mining districts of the Bolivian highlands. At that time, the miners' unions were still very important, considered as the political vanguard in Latin America.

In times of peace and democracy - which were not the most frequent - mining radios were integrated into the daily life of the communities. They functioned efficiently as alternatives to telephone and mail services. The people of the mining centres received their correspondence through the radio and sent messages of all kinds, which were read several times a day: calls for meetings of the Committee of Housewives, messages from the union leaders about their negotiations with the Government in the capital, messages of love between young people, sports activities, funerals, births and local festivities.

In times of political conflict, trade union radios became the only reliable source of information. While the military attacked newspapers radio and television stations in the cities, the only information available came through the mining radios. All of them joined in the "mining chain" until the army penetrated the mining districts and stormed the facilities, defended to the last by the workers. A movie of Jorge Sanjinés, El Coraje del Pueblo, rebuilds the army attack in June 1967 in the mining district of Siglo XX and the seizure of union radio. https://youtu.be/6ZzRW0mqc7w

23

The mining radios were important insofar as the miners were important in the economy and politics of Bolivia. But also the influence of the miners grew during the decades in which they had at their disposal this powerful means of communication to express their ideas. As the importance of mining declined in the 1980s, trade unions weakened and many of the stations disappeared, at the same time the mines were closed.

Participatory Communication

The radio stations played a preponderant role in strengthening the mining unions in the struggle for unity. All unions were affiliated with the Bolivian Trade Union Federation of Mining Workers (FSTMB), which for four decades (1946 to 1986) was the vanguard of the powerful Bolivian Workers' Central (COB). It is not simply coincidence that unions and radio stations shared premises in most of the mining districts, and that the union's Secretary of Culture was usually the director of the radio station.

The social impact of the radio stations of the mines was also important in the process of construction of a cultural identity in the mining centres and in the surrounding peasant communities. On a daily basis, the mining radios were open to participation. The visits to the stations were very frequent, whenever people needed to express themselves on any topic that affected their lives.

24 The most innovative in the experience of mining radios in Bolivia is community participation. The characteristics of this participation constituted a revolutionary event in the 1950s, as they still are today. Very few experiences of participatory communication have reached a level of total appropriation of a means of communication in terms of technology, day-to-day management, content and service to the community.

One of the most interesting aspects is that of training. The mining stations gave rise to new generations of journalists. The training was usually done locally, with the support of other organizations. Some journalists and broadcasters who began their professional activity in the mining radios later became well-known radialistas when emigrating to the cities.

The end of mining radio stations

Although the mining radios were oriented by the ideology of the unions, this did not represent an obstacle to participation insofar as they reflected the will of the workers. In the positions of responsibility of the union, leaders of different political parties were elected, but none of them intended to break the sense of unity that was reflected in the radio programmes.

The real challenge of the mining radios was political repression, the same one that affected the mining class as a whole. Some stations were destroyed by the army six or seven times in the course of their existence. Several chose to preserve the traces of resistance on their walls: the bullet impacts received. Again and again, destroyed equipment was replaced by new equipment purchased with the contribution of the workers. Impoverished but worthy, they offered one day of their salary to their station.

Martin Butera with mining radio journalist (La Paz, Bolivia)

From the technical point of view, the mining stations suffered material deficiencies. The equipment of most of them was very elementary, although sufficient to carry out the work. When equipment was damaged it was repaired by local technicians who lacked the necessary replacement parts but were abundant in creativity. The low capacity to pay salaries to producers made the quality of programming low, especially in terms of educational content.

25 What finally caused the mining radios to end in the 1980s was the abrupt change in the country's economy. Traditional mining ceased to be central in exports and the cost of producing tin was higher than the international price. The government closed state mines; workers moved to cities in search of employment, leaving ghost camps behind. The influence of the unions decreased, and few stations survived the transition to the new century.

On 28 August 2017, the Ministry of Mining presented a decoration to the directors of the mining radios that are still in force. The award also recognized the "high level of awareness of workers to convey their ideals against the editorial position of the commercial media that did not take into account these struggles."

The Bolivian government recognized the mining radios for their contribution to the democratic political history, the defence of human rights and their consequences in defence of the working class and workers.

"One of the disastrous actions was when several military radios intervened in the military coup, the equipment was destroyed, many journalists and journalists were imprisoned, because the network of mining radios constituted a whole subversive network of communication for revolution and liberation. , that is why this type of media is important, "said the current Minister of Mining, Cesar Navarro Miranda, when he offered the tribute.

Likewise, he indicated that the political participation from the chain of mining radios in dictatorial processes was decisive for the return of democracy and that is why they constitute a political and democratic history, thanks to the sacrifice of the workers. Among those that stand out: Radio 21 December, National de Huanuni, Vanguardia de Colquiri, 16 March of the Bolívar mine, Ánimas and Chichas de Siete Suyos, among others. The event was nuanced with musical participation achieving great emotion among the participants.

One of the few survivors

On 24 June Huanuni National Radio will be 60 years old. The historic National Radio of Huanuni, one of the first miner-union radios in Bolivia, recognized for its active participation in the country's social struggles, is ready for its re-launch with a powerful team and state support.

Now with a modern FM equipment (and on 92.5 MHz), it will be a witness to the new Huanuni radio that emerged to the ether in the 1950's and was a faithful witness of the struggle of the mining unions and the popular classes.

Respondent since its birth, Radio Nacional de Huanuni became the inseparable companion of the workers of this mining centrw who bled tin for the benefit of the great powers and the so-called "tin barons".

26 Since then, the union radio station has written an unprecedented story in Bolivia, as an inseparable companion of the workers' struggles and vanguard of the resistance of the miners against totalitarian regimes between 1964 and 1982.

Also as a school of Bolivian broadcasting, by the passage of the brightest speakers and budding journalists by their microphones. Because of the station's irrefutable identification with the social movements it suffered several attempts to silence its voice, through dictatorial governments that destroyed equipment and assassinated several miners.

Like the one perpetrated in 1967 in the ferocious massacre of San Juan when military forces razed all their equipment and looted their nightclub when the radio accompanied and encouraged a mining protest against the government of President René Barrientos Ortuño. www.radionacionaldehuanuni.com Documentaries

First documentary about one of the most important historical experiences of participatory communication: the radio stations of the mining workers of Bolivia. Made in 1983 for UNESCO by Eduardo Barrios and Alfonso Gumucio Dagron, in 16 mm. https://youtu.be/-c3_g5jrMTI

Voices of the Socavón Two Argentines produced a documentary that highlights the struggle of mining radios in Bolivia during the dictatorships. Voces del Socavón, a production made by Argentine filmmakers Julia Delfini and Magalí Vela Vázquez and is about the radio La voz del minero from the Siglo XX mine in Potosí, which was the first station financed and controlled by workers, and a pioneer in America Latina

The voices of the tunnel tells the story of Bolivia's mining radios, led by La Voz del Minero, and its role in the workers' union struggle during the second half of the 20th century. The protagonists of this story, union leaders, women of the Housewives Committee, miners and announcers, relate the historical events they went through in search of the Bolivian workers' revolution. The film links the culture within the mining camps, accompanied by the poetry and stories of the famous Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano, in what is one of his last interviews. The Ark Glasgow 1530 kHz on air After a break of almost 5 years, 1530 kHz is alive again in Glasgow with Radio Ramadhan 365. This station was awarded an AM community radio licence in June 2017, so has only just got on-air before the two-year startup deadline. Ark AM, the name on the original application, says it will serve the needs of Glasgow’s Muslim communities. They also state on the website DAB digital radio coverage. Reception does not seem to be very strong and certainly not as loud and clear as the previous user of 1530 AM - Celtic Music Radio from January 2008 to July 2014. Radio Ramadhan Ark 1530 AM follows the launch at Easter of Revival FM which serves the Christian community in Glasgow on 93 MHz. (Radio Today 9 May via MET) Ark is currently on low power around 10W but full power is due to be implemented later this month (David Thorpe 9 May)

Russia Moscow MW transmitters on 612, 738 kHz off air World Radio Network announced that “ Unfortunately, from 1 May we will have to temporarily suspend our broadcasts on medium wave 738 kHz . The reason is the consolidation of state structures in our country: The transmitting centre at which our technical facilities are located has lost its inde pendence and entered into a larger structure. Thus, from 1 May, all broadcasting from Kurkino stops. To date, the re are just the two remaining transmitters: At a frequency of 612 kHz , there is Narodnoe Radio and Radonezh and at a frequency of 738 kHz World Radio Network. As for us, the World Radio Network, we are doing everything possible to find a new place to accommodate our facilities and resume broadcasting on medium wave 738 kHz." (Quote from "Radiopanorama" programme Vadim Alekseev. 27 Apr via mediumw ave.info)

The transmitter at 738 kHz (Kurkino) was turned off at midnight on 1 May. There is now no broadcasting on the frequency. The transmitter on 612 kHz (Kurkino) is also off air, both Narodnoe Radio and Radonezh are missing in the evening. (Vasily Gulyaev via Anatoly Klepov, RUSdx 1027 via BC -DX)

Denmark World Music Radio (WMR) is back on 15805 kHz (200 W). On air Saturday and Sunday 0700-2000 UTC. 5840 kHz is still on the air with some 25 - 35 W continuously. World Music Radio on 15805 kHz is probably the station on 19 m with the lowest power - and with the most simple aerial - so obviously that makes it a DX catch. It is not a signal you can rely on for regular listening - tuning in and then expecting a fine signal. Most of the time the signal will be absent or barely audible - in the areas where the signal propagates into (Russia, Southern Europe, Northern Scandinavia, Brazil, North America - and even once in Thailand). I had imagined that that would have created more interest among DX'ers. I have just purchased a new 3 element yagi for 15805 kHz, so hopefully soon there will be some improvement in signal strength. Propagation Report With James Welsh [email protected] Links: www.jameswelsh.org.uk

Propagation Summary Solar activity was mainly at very low to low levels with the exception of a pair of C-class earth directed flares occurring on 5 May. The Solar flux was at normal levels on 29 Apr il - 01 May, reaching high levels on 02-05 May.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels through the period. Quiet levels were observed on 29-30 April under a nominal solar wind regime. Late on 01 May through to 02 May, unsettled to active levels were observed under an enhanced solar wind environment due to influence from a negative polarity Coronal Hole High Speed Stream (CH HSS). On 03 -04 May, geomagnetic conditions were at quiet to unsettled levels as negative polarity CH HSS influence continued. By 05 May, quiet conditions were observed.

Propagation Forecast until 15 June Solar activity is expected to be very low levels throughout the period. The Solar flux is expected to be at high levels on 29 May - 02 June due to coronal hole high speed stream effects. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at active levels on 29 May due to recurrent coronal hole activity. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected for the remainder of the period. (http://bit.ly/dxlatest )

Simon Hockenhull writes "It was quite a good month but with variable nightime conditions. During the evening of the 4 May I noticed that RAI R1 from Milan on 900 kHz was off air for quite some time. It was due to a combination of thunderstorms and snowstorms over large parts of northern Italy causing considerable power disruptions. I have identified the new LPAM broadcast on 1287 kHz, it's a new BFBS broadcast for the Gurkhas with the transmitter at Warminster Barracks. Still no news about the Student Union station URB from the University of Bath. It is still off air on 1449 kHz and its online service is also down". Thanks for the update Simon. Until next time, good listening, Tony

Anker Petersen reports (22 nd May) that all Xinjiang frequencies in the 60-metre band are now off for the summer season. Xinjiang PBS (Urumqi, China) transmits on these 60 metre band frequencies in their winter only: Chinese General Service on 3950 and 5060kHz; Uighur Service on 3990 and 4980kHz; Kazakh programme on 4850kHz; Mongolian programme on 4500kHz. Listen out for their return in November!

Voice of Indonesia are now using 4750 kHz as well as 3325 kHz (Palangkaraya) for their International Service. WRTH updates (May) says 4750 is “using a transmitter that was previously in service at the Makassar transmitter site, but is now installed at the Jakarta Cimanngis, site.” WRTH marks both frequencies as “irregular”. Plus of course, 4750 is also used by Bangladesh Betar, so difficult to hear. English according to the WRTH is scheduled at 1000-1100, 1300-1400 and 2100-2200 UTC.

Radio Canada International’s online “The Link” programme is now also relayed at a new time on Sundays via Shortwaveservice (Germany): 1930-2000 UTC on 3985kHz. Still also scheduled Sundays 1700-1730 re the schedule at: http://www.shortwaveservice.com/index.php/de/aktuelles Host, Marc Montgomery, said on the 19 th May edition that they no longer have QSLs, so cannot verify the relay of the programme via the Kall transmitter. (ARo) N.B. RCI’s Link programme is only 30 minutes long, so Shortwaveservice fills with pop music for the following 30 minutes. (AP)

Radio Sur Andina from Sicuani in the south of Peru is a new station on 4930kHz, first heard by Karel Honzik (in Czechia) from 0034 UTC on 19 th May. A weak signal next to a powerful utility made it a difficult catch. The station closed suddenly with no sign-off at 0139 UTC. There are more details and some recordings on Karel’s blog, including at 0116 an ID “Radio Sur Andina, Sicuani - onda corta tropical”: http://dx-kh.cz/2019/05/22/radio-sur-andina- sicuani-4930-khz-peru/ The station’s is OAW7M and it has a recent Facebook page “Radio Sur Andina” which includes video of their opening ceremony and with logo (right) (OCT is an abbreviation for ‘Onda Corta Tropical’). Until next month, 73s and Good DX! Alan

UK NEWS (continued from page 30) Orkney 5G broadcast trial extended The BBC has decided to extend the duration of its 5G broadcast radio trial in Orkney until the end of September after receiving positive feedback from participants. The Orkney islands were selected for the BBC’s broadcast radio and broadband access trial because the region has poor digital radio coverage and limited fixed and mobile broadband connectivity. The trial was launched in February in Stronsay, Orkney making residents there among the first in the world to receive live radio broadcasts over 5G. (5G via Mike Terry 17 May)

Report from Turkey with Chris Greenway

Some notes on reception in Istanbul, which I visited last week:

FM : A total of 78 strong local signals were heard - all of the TRT and commercial outlets listed in WRTH 2019, plus many others. I was told that many or all of the stations are moving to the new and very tall (and very visible) transmission tower in the Asian half of the city.

The only foreign station on FM is CRI Turk FM, on 87.5.

Some Turkish TV channels relay their audio track on FM. One of these is TRT World (TRT's international English-language TV service) which has its audio on 106.8.

A niche station is Radyo Trafik, which specialises in airing calls from drivers reporting traffic jams.

Still going on FM (94.1 in Istanbul) is Turkish Police Radio (Turkiye Polis Radyosu), which older DXers may remember from past decades as a shortwave station (6340 and 7370).

Mediumwave : The only stations audible in the daytime are from abroad: 549 (Ukraine), 558 (Romania), 720 (Romania), 729 (Greece), 909 (Romania) 1332 (Romania), 1413 (Moldova - relaying Russia's Vesti FM).

Longwave : 153 Romania has a strong signal. The only other LW station audible during the day is 225 Poland, with noticeably better reception than in southern England, though its transmitter site is closer to London than to Istanbul, and the signal path from Poland to the UK is quite an easy one (across the North German Plain, the Low Countries and the North Sea). I see from its Wikipedia page that the Polish 225 transmitter has a directional aerial: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solec_Kujawski_radio_transmitter (Chris Greenway, 6 May)

The inaugural meeting of a new station sup port group met in Epping, Essex on May 7th at the Speak Easy Bar which has a Caroline theme. The Radio Caroline 648 Supporters Club is for the East Anglia area and will have regular meetings , including Caroline speakers, to raise funds for the Caroline ship Ross Revenge and the station itself. Felixstowe Museum reopened for the 2019 season on 21 st April and now has a special display remembering the town’s pirate radio past. Radio Caroline began broadcasting moored off Felixstowe in 1964. From June 1966 to August 14th 1967, tenders supplied the Caroline ship as well as Radio London and Radio England ships from Felixstowe. The museum display has been assembled by the Felixstowe & Offshore Radio Facebook Group and is part of a 1960s themed display. The museum shop has a small amount of Radio Caroline merchandise for sale. The museum is open 12pm5pm (last admission 4.30pm) on the following days: June, July & September : Wednesdays & Sundays. August: Wednesdays, Thursdays & Sundays . October : Sundays and Wednesday 23rd October (during halfterm). Adult admission £2 (c ash only). Museum is 2.5 miles from the town centre on Landguard Point, a ddress: Viewpoint Rd, Felixstowe IP11 3TW. Check website at: http://felixstowemuseum.org/ for directions (include No 77 bus from Ipswich an d foot ferry from Harwich & Shotley). (Ipswich24 magazine June 2019)

A British Pathé film crew left Felixstowe on the tender Offshore 1 for a 2 day film shoot on the Caroline ship in late summer 1965. They produced a 3 minute film, but this has had 7 minutes of outtakes skilfully added to produce this great record (in colour) of life aboard the MV Mi Amigo, available on Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI7ZL76XPts (AP)
