Now that the holidays are over, it is time to jump back in and prepare for all of the upcoming events that will be taking place. Last year, we took some chances by combining some meetings and also moving some of the meeting dates and locations. Although some worked out well, others needed a little tweaking. You spoke and we listened. We moved the Managers and Directors Academies back to October and February with the graduation ceremony taking place at the Annual Conference. Thank you for your input.

We are all working hard to secure speakers, teachers, and volunteers for the 2018 Annual Conference in San Antonio. If you are interested in teaching, speaking, or volunteering please contact us and we will be happy to assist you.

As you all know, each year TASN has elections to fill the board positions. Please take the time to vote for your next set of leaders. This is important for you and also for the association. In addition, if you are interested in running for a position, please contact me and I will be happy to discuss the qualifications, responsibilities, time out of office, and any other questions you may have. TASN needs strong leaders to move us forward.

The February Board/Committee meetings will be held at the Austin Marriott South in Austin, Texas on February 13–14, 2018. Please join us and take part in the meetings, as this is your association and we want and need your input. If you are interested in serving on one of the TASN committees please contact me.

Last but certainly not least: TASN has several different scholarships available and we also have a very healthy reserve of funds to offer to you, the members. The criteria and the forms are available on the TASN website at www.tasn.net or you can contact Christina Mosny at [email protected].

11 PRESIDENT-ELECT

Melissa Bryan Copperas Cove ISD | Director of Child Nutrition & Warehouse Services

TASN Member: 8 years| SNA Member: 9 years TASN Positions Held: Area 5 Representative; Education Committee TASN/SNA Presentations: Taught Marketing at Directors Academy; Taught fitness class (Zumba) at TASN Education/Certifications: Bachelor of Science in Business; TASN Level 5 certification; ServSafe certification (proctor and administrator) Goals for Office: I have been attending TASN and SNA events for many years and for a lot of those years I sat and enjoyed the classes and conferences and enjoyed all that was offered by TASN. I have seen such a change in TASN that has encouraged me to start stepping up and volunteering for different areas.

As the vice president, I will work hard to continue on the path that the current president, the TASN Board of Directors, and past presidents have started working towards. That path is clearly defined in that we strive to meet all the goals set in the TASN Strategic Plan 2016–2019.

Goal 1: Marketing - promoting TASN and building relationships that help us grow. Goal 2: Membership - encourage more membership and the importance of being a member. Goal 3: Certification - identify needs of both individual members and industry members to make sure certification is offered on every level that is needed. How TASN is the leading authority in training. Goal 4: Financials - making sure funding is adequate for all needs but still stay within guidelines.

As TASN Vice President I will make it a priority to attend all meetings and obligations that are required. I will work hard to continue to empower the community of school nutrition professionals through partnership and education, which IS the mission statement of TASN.

The TASN vision, which states that TASN is the recognized leader in promoting excellence through school nutrition, is very true. At SNA conferences I have heard year after year that TASN is a leader in this field, and to be allowed to be a part of this group of outstanding professionals is amazing to me. I have sat on the education committee and have been the TASN Area 5 Representative for the last two years. I want to continue to make a difference at TASN and meet each one of you, and hear your voices and what you would like to see TASN accomplish in the coming years. Growing and changing is hard for some people, but as we have all realized in the last five years in school nutrition, changing is just part of the new norm Winter 2018 for our profession. So let’s work together to make this “change” beneficial to all involved. I ask that you vote for me as TASN Vice President so that we can continue to make each member of TASN a success and encourage each other to set goals 12 and reach for them together. Together we have four wonderful children. Daughters Laura, Audra, and Krystal, along with our son Daniel, are our beloved family. Our daughter Krystal has made us proud grandparents to Eva and Eli. After college and many years with Wilsonart International I was ready for a change. I accepted a position with Belton ISD in special education. This set the stage for meeting TASN Past President Mrs. Reba Baker, who gave me my first opportunity to work in school nutrition as a cafeteria manager. Reba provided me with the opportunity to learn all I could about school nutrition, and even sent me to the TASN Managers Academy. Then she helped me apply for a scholarship to attend the TASN Directors Academy. This formal training and her mentoring gave me the skills to become the Food Service Director for Academy ISD and Troy ISD. I am currently the Director of Nutrition Services for Lampasas ISD. Goals for Office: to pay it forward to all the TASN Members that would like to take advantage of our educational opportunities throughout the association. If elected I will work with the education committee to develop ways that will make our Managers & Directors Academy more affordable to all those willing to step up and move their careers to the next level. As a committee, we can work with SNA to learn what other states are doing to push the education of their association members. I want to see our association use its technology to streamline some of these courses/academies through webinars and zoom so we can eliminate much of the travel cost when possible. This in itself would allow a higher participation from the smaller districts that cannot afford to travel at all. Even some of our larger districts are having trouble with funding for nutrition training. It’s time for a change that will put our educational opportunities within reach of those who struggle to afford the chance. TDA has raised the training bar with the professional standards so I feel we should help build a nutrition team that can outshine all others.

TIM GABRIELSON Tim Gabrielson has been performing and speaking for over 28 years. He originally became in-demand nationally for his riveting show combining clean humor and highly- skilled magic. It didn’t take long for him to land fill-in spots for Vegas headliners like Ron Lucas and Mac King before acquiring his own room at The House of Blues in Mandalay Bay. Tim realized that his humor was touching lives by allowing people to see beyond their immediate hardships, and give them perspective. So, for the past 10+ years, he has blended comedy, magic, and inspirational principles Winter 2018 as he presents to corporations and educational groups- equipping them to live with more joy and intentionality. 28 You are the only one who controls how you think, feel, and act. When this “common sense” becomes “common practice,” you gain perspective. Perspective enables your organization to solve problems easier, find solutions quicker, create a more overall efficient team, and have fewer turnovers all by implementing positive change. LEARNING SESSIONS

TRAIN THE TRAINER (3 PARTS) This three-day workshop will prepare new trainers with critical training skills and introduce seasoned practitioners to the latest techniques for delivering powerful training. Whether you have been a trainer for years, or have never been in front of a classroom, this workshop will show you how to become a facilitator of learning.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT Administering school nutrition programs has become increasingly complex with new menu planning standards, rising food costs, and higher compliance requirements. With school nutrition directors being expected to operate their programs as financially solvent businesses, there is a need for directors to become skilled at strategic financial planning and resource optimization. This session will show you the impact of your operational decisions on the financial performance of your program.

GRANT WRITING You can’t receive a grant if you don’t submit a proposal – but how do you even start? This session will help you identify your program’s goals, how to identify grants to pursue, and what you need to know to write a successful and strong proposal.

Keys to School Foodservice Success: Collaborating and Innovating to Keep Up with an Ever-changing Industry

By Mark Rodriguez Director of Sales East, Somma Foods

As I went through the products are measured. Manufactures are now driven process of selecting to create products that fit new standards for nutrition, a topic for this taste, and variety. Kids may still eat the same menu article, I reflected items that they ate 25 years ago, but the products on the 33 years I’ve being requested and served are much different. Now spent working in the more than ever, manufacturers must innovate to keep school foodservice up with the demand for clean label products made industry and found with real ingredients. one common theme: change. I began to At Somma Foods, we consider what kids and operators realize that I could are looking for in their food at every stage of product write an entire book development. We know what our customers don’t about the changes I’ve want to see on the ingredient statement, and one of seen and experienced throughout my career in this our top priorities is making those statements as short constantly evolving business. as possible, with nutritious and familiar ingredients. We take the process to the next level by constantly Just 25 years ago, I was hitting the road and paying innovating our product offerings, listening to our visits to every school district in Texas, from Texarkana customers, and incorporating new flavors and foods to El Paso, Amarillo to Brownsville. I hand wrote they love. The food we make is food that we feel good orders and faxed them to our office at the end of about feeding our own children, and our simple and each week. At that time, we as an industry were just transparent approach is what makes us unique. beginning to get involved with commodity processing. Each conference and industry event presented an opportunity to collaborate. We discussed old and new challenges and shared our ideas to better the industry. We worked closely together every day to accomplish things that others thought weren’t possible. The National School Lunch Program has www.TASN.net been feeding students for 71 years. That means I have been a part of this industry for almost half of the time the program has been in existence, and I know that none of the great things we’ve been able to achieve would have been possible without our commitment to coming together and collaborating.

Today, that commitment to working together and 49 sharing ideas is as strong as ever. One of the many changes we’ve experienced over the years is an increase in the information available to kids. Our customer is more informed than ever before. Students know what they are eating and demand products that fit their needs and preferences. The famous “golden arches’ are no longer the standard by which our BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

by Melissa Moore Foodservice Consultant Foodservice Design Professionals

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: This topic has been discussed on several occasions through verbal conversations and presentations. However, the importance of the subject matter gives me pause, as I have seen firsthand the discord created when foodservice and facilities are not on the same page. For districts that do not have a facilities department, this information holds true for all the decision makers in your district that may be involved with any project.

Building a strong relationship between the foodservice department and facilities (internal decision makers) should be a priority. Everyone on the team has the same desired outcome: Building a functional, appealing, inviting, cost effective facility where children want to enter and are presented with nutritional menu options. That is a tall order to fill if there is a lack of communication or discord between the team members.

The foodservice director and the facilities director both want the same outcome but come at it from two different directions and thought processes. Neither one is right or wrong, and they both have valid concerns. But if you don’t have a strong working relationship, sometimes you have a hard time meeting in the middle.

May I suggest taking your facilities director (or other decision makers) to lunch or possibly treating their department to a special luncheon? This relationship truly is instrumental to a successful program. Having time to sit down and discuss a game plan on how to effectively incorporate the ideas/decisions from all parties will be greatly beneficial to the overall project.

During your allocated time with the other decision makers on your team I recommend a discussion about creating district standards, if you haven’t already done so. Having a set of district standards will be beneficial in many ways, including keeping equipment consistency within your district - your maintenance department will thank you!

Lastly, we recommend you request to be involved in all design meetings if you are currently not. This is the time for everyone to come together and move toward a common goal, with handshakes and smiles. I believe in the power of communication. Anything can be solved with communication and the willingness to try and understand the differing views within the team.

If you have a good relationship with your facilities department, keep it up. If you have a struggling Winter 2018 relationship, take it one step at a time. One kind gesture begets another. 50 TDA UPDATE

Tips for Sticking with Resolutions If you’re like a lot of folks, you make a fresh start when a new year begins, and pledge to do better, to exercise more, or to make time for special pursuits or people. But, like the rest of us, sometimes you find it difficult to keep the promises you make to yourself without help. Here are some tips for sticking with your resolutions, according to psychologists. 1.
