School Year Enrollment School Year Enrollment School Year Enrollment School Year Enrollment (Kansas Education Data Reporting web site.) Editorial By Jon A. Brake Publisher One week before the City of Manhattan takes a bond issue to the voters, the Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 School District is dis- cussing potentially taking a $100 Million bond issue to the voters sometime in the future. According to the Manhattan Mercury: “The board is looking at a possible bond issue to alleviate crowding at the elementary level, as well as bringing elementary facilities up to standard with the rest of the school district.” The School District may have an elementary school crowding problem but they do not have a School District crowding problem. The graphic at the top shows the School District’s enrollment from 1999-2000 to 2016-2017. The District has 360 less students than they had twenty-five (25) years ago. And that is after the District built four new schools in 1994 and new gyms in 2009. In 2007 the School District had $11.8 million in cash at the end of the school year. In 2016 the School District had $21.3 million in cash at the end of the school year. (All figures come from the Kansas Education Data Reporting web site.) Debt is the Problem Look at the School Districts debt $99 million and they want to add another $100 million.

  • THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 16, No. 1 (1994) Despite the physical and mental requirements, pro players have been able to combine sports and medicine DOCTORS IN THE HUDDLE BY JIM CAMPBELL Originally published in Legends, June 1985 WHEN ONE TAKES INTO account the number of youngsters who play football at some level in the course of a year and the number who reach the professional level eventually, the pro football player is truly one in a million. If you take that further and consider the handful of pro footballers who successfully combined an athletic and medical career, then you really have an elite group. Nonetheless, from the earliest days of the National Football League there have been players who have achieved that lofty height. Joe Alexander, an All-America center at Syracuse and later captain of the New York Football Giants, was one of the first with dual careers. Johnny Mohardt, a quarterback from Notre Dame, was another player/physician pioneer. Eddie Anderson, an end at Notre Dame who later became an outstanding college coach, was still another who combined medicine and pro football in the early 1920s. Although the first three NFL doctors are no longer living, two of them were members of a very exclusive group -- The Chicago Bears Doctors Club. Although the group was not formally chartered, it is more than a coincidence that nearly half of the players up to the 1960s who went on to become doctors played for the Bears. The reason, as both Mohardt and Anderson attested, was the player/coach/owner of theBears -- George S.

It was then that sev er al of the col lege’s more ro bust stu dents, along with the en thu si as tic sup port of a cou ple of young “profs,” Addison Clark, Jr., and A.C. The first con test was an 86 vic to ry over Toby’s Busi ness College of Waco and the other two games were with the Houston Heavy weights, a town team. By 1897 the new sport had progressed and AddRan enlisted its first coach, Joe J. Field, to direct the team. Field’s ballclub won three games that autumn, including a first victory over Texas A&M. The only loss was to the Univer si ty of Tex as, 1810.

KEY HISTORICAL MOMENTS GETTING INTO THE WIFU: 1951 TO 1954 1951 A group led by Ken Stauffer and Tiny Radar, inspired by columnist Andy Lytle, sends representatives to the off-season Western Interprovincial Football Union meetings to initiate Vancouver’s bid for a team. 1952 WIFU rejects Vancouver’s application when Winnipeg and Regina vote against the idea of a fifth team. 1953 The first annual meeting of the club, held on January 22, 1953 saw Arthur E. Mercer named as the first President. With the help of future Hall of Fame builder Vic Spencer, Vancouver was granted a conditional franchise on the requirements of a 15,000 seat stadium, selling 6,500 season tickets and providing guaranteed travel expenses of the visiting teams. The Lions hire their first head coach Annis Stukus who begins to scout for players without the aid of an expansion draft. 1953 Water boy and future club GM, President and Hall of Famer Bob Ackles is hired. 1954 Empire Stadium opens in time for the 1954 British Empire Games and the Lions’ inaugural season in the WIFU. The Lions first-ever game is a 22-0 pre-season loss to Montreal before 19,371 spectators. 1954 The Lions open at home on August 28, 1954 against Winnipeg and their first ever TD comes a minute before half-time as By Bailey crashes over from a yard out to give BC a 5-1 lead. The Bombers fought back however with a TD to level the score. Two 4th quarter singles eventually gave Winnipeg the victory by an 8-6 count.
